This 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class is one of the most intriguing examples we've come across in a while. It is highly vaulted, with clear and clean paint on the obverse, and exemplary beading on the frame. The patina on the frame is also noteworthy. The cross is magnetic and in excellent condition.

The reverse of the cross is where things get even more interesting. It has a beautiful patina and comes with a marvelous coke bottle style pin with "Godet Berlin" on it. This was a side hook Iron Cross, which meant it required three sewn-in loops on a tunic to mount it correctly. Unfortunately, one of the side hooks has snapped off, but this does not diminish the unique value of this Iron Cross.

Adding to its rarity is the original Godet presentation case. The black leatherette case has a large 1914 Iron Cross embossed in silver on the outer lid. There are signs of wear and age on the exterior, but the snap closure works perfectly, and the case has a white silk liner with rust spots. The cross itself does not have any rust, but it is evident that something of iron was pressed against the silk liner. The cross fits snugly in its resting place and was made for the Godet firm, displaying their name and address in Berlin.

This Iron Cross was likely owned by a senior officer with superb taste and the financial means to acquire the best of the best. It is an amazing piece of history and a consignment item.
