Lippe-Detmold was a small Imperial German Principality. Our offering today is its War Service Cross 2nd Class. The gilt-toned cross measures 1.5” x 1.5.” Its obverse features the Lippe-Detmold Prince’s crowned royal cypher, Lippe-Detmold’s symbolic rose, and the date, 1914. It is Lippe-Detmold’s 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class equivalent. Its reverse displays the legend “For Service in War.” Its Combatant’s ribbon displays two thin red stripes, two thin red stripes, and one wide yellow stripe. The decoration is in very fine condition. As it was a smaller state, the decoration was awarded in smaller numbers to its native sons, as well as other German and Austrian allies.
