Germany had two principal African colonies. The biggest and most profitable was Deutsch-Ostafrika (German East Africa). The other colony was Deutsch-Südwestafrika (German Southwest Africa), for which this particular medal was issued. The decoration’s obverse features Germania’s head in profile and the campaign’s dates, 1904-1906. [Germania was the mythical female personification of Germany and its people]. Its reverse features Kaiser Wilhelm II’s royal cypher surrounded by the caption “Verdienst um die Expedition.” The decoration is set up as a one-place medal bar. The ribbon bar’s obverse features its special red, black, and white ribbon. The ribbon bar and the decoration are in excellent condition.
