This is a rather unusual pendant that depicts an Austrian soldier in uniform, wearing his kepi. Its frame is quite attractive, consisting of two thin gold-toned bands woven together to form the frame. It has a small ring at the top through which a chain could be inserted in order to wear the pendant.
Its reverse is quite unusual. Instead of the normal, gilt-toned backing, the soldier’s wife or sweetheart has inserted her photograph. I do not know if he or she wore it, or whether it was given to a mother to keep her two children near her heart. Many of these photographic pins and pendants are just so touching! Some days they make my heart hurt.
