This is an interesting decoration that comes from the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt. It is the Military Red Cross Service Cross. It was awarded to soldiers who were serving in a Red Cross capacity. It is an interestingly-shaped cross, of a type rarely seen among German decorations. The cross is gilt-toned and on the obverse we see “Für Pflege der Soldaten( For Nursing Soldiers)” and 1914. On the reverse it reads “Den 25 ten August 1870(The 25th August 1870),” when the award was established. It comes attached to a red and gold ribbon, and is in very fine condition.
