This is an unusually large-format photograph (12 3/8″ x 19 1/4″) of Kompagnie Nr 9 (the regiment’s Reserve-Kompagnie) from Königl. Sächs 2. Grenadier-Regiment Nr 101 Kaiser Wilhelm (I), König von Preußen. The regiment was formed in 1670. It was garrisoned at Saxony’s capital city, Dresden, and attached to the XII. Armeekorps. It is interesting to note from the photograph that the Kompagnie was serving in China from 1899 to 1901. They would have been present during the Boxer Rebellion. It is a marvelous photograph that is a true boon to a uniform study. It features seventy-four different men. We see a number of different uniforms, headdress forms, etc. The men are holding several signs to indicate their years of Chinese service.
I honestly cannot remember a photograph this large being taken of any unit. All you Colonial and Saxon collectors, this is a must for your collection.
