This is the Order of the White Falcon 2nd Class with Swords from the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar. The decoration is one of my favorites. I find its overall presentation extremely elegant. The Duchy did a wonderful job of incorporating handsome, multicolored enamel work. The cross, including the large, articulated silver crown, measures 2 ½” from the cross’s top to its bottom. It also measures 1 ½” from its left to its right sides. The cross’s obverse is a very rich dark-green. Superimposed over it is a white falcon with outstretched wings. Gold highlights glint across the bird’s full surface. Silver swords extend diagonally between the cross’s arms and through the bird’s center. The cross’s reverse features a combination of white (predominately) and the same shade of green as seen on the obverse. Instead of a white falcon, the center features an oval device with a gold crown and gold oak leaves that form a frame for the oval-shaped device. This makes for a most effective presentation between the gold crown and oak leaves. In the center is a blue enamel background on which the Duchy’s motto “Vigilando Ascendimus” (Through vigilance we ascend) appears in gold. The final touch is a wide length of ribbon. The Order of the White Falcon was awarded in very small numbers to native sons of this Saxon Duchy, and to other important persons in the civilian and military sectors. The example, which is in excellent condition, is one that we infrequently see. It will make for a fine addition to any collection!
