This is a second-generation 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War Combatant’s Medal. The original Franco-Prussian War Combatant’s Medals were produced from captured French cannons’ melted bronze. They had etchings on their edges stating the fact. The practice began in the Napoleonic Wars. Medals were offered for the wars’ various years, and also were etched on the edge. This medal was purchased by a veteran who either had lost his medal, or perhaps wanted an example like this to mount on a medal bar.
The medal is in excellent condition. It is supplied without a ribbon so you too can mount it on a medal bar. If you would like to have a ribbon, you may have one for an additional $10.00.
