This color postcard shows Herzog Albrecht of Württemberg (1865-1939). With the death of his father in 1917, he became the heir to Württemberg’s throne. When König Wilhelm II died in 1921, he became Württemberg’s Pretender to the throne. Herzog Albrecht was a highly-decorated generalfeldmarschall during WW I, one of Germany’s top military commanders with key posts on the Western Front. In this pose he is wearing a general’s feldgrau uniform. He has an Iron Cross 1st Class on his left breast and a high-level Austrian decoration at his throat. Württemberg’s royal house had strong ties to Austria. They even served as Austria’s ally in the 1866 Austro-Prussian War.
