ALTIMETER – AIRPLANE/ZEPPELIN – ORIGINAL STORAGE CASE.
This is an altimeter that dates from 1916 (approximately), and was used for either an airplane or a zeppelin. The altimeter is similar to a pocket watch in appearance, but MUCH thicker. It measures 1 ¾” in diameter and is ¾” thick. A ring at the top allowed it to be hung up in an airplane’s cockpit or on a zeppelin’s control panel. A single hand indicates the altitude in meters by pointing to marks around the dial. A manufacturer’s hallmark appears on the altimeter’s face. Other marks appear on the case’s reverse. I am unable to ascertain their importance.
The altimeter is housed in its original, black leatherette, storage/protective case, which measures 1” x 2 ½” x 2 ½.” It has a snap closure that is fully operational, The altimeter fits quite snugly into the case, which has protected it for more than one-hundred-years. It is a marvelous aviation artifact.
