Today we are offering a very fine example of the Duchy of Braunschweig’s 1914 War Service Cross 2nd Class (Kriegsverdienstkreuz) with the Combatants ribbon. Most of the Kingdoms, Grand Duchies, Duchies, Principalities and Free States offered their equivalents of the 1914 Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd Class, as was the case with the small Duchy of Braunschweig. Its 2nd Class Cross was awarded to both combatants and non combatants during WW I. [The ribbons had their colors REVERSED on the wide vs. narrow ribbon widths].
Braunschweig also had two other special differences. First, the 2nd Class was awarded in some cases with a special metal device indicating that the decoration was awarded for special gallantry in the face of the enemy. It was as if the gallantry device rendered it a 2.5 Class which fell between the normal 2nd and 1st Class awards.
Overall, it is a fine example of this infrequently-seen decoration
