    ALBUM – THIRTY-THREE PHOTOGRAPHS – DIAGRAMS – 1. GARDE-REGIMENT zu FUß – PRUSSIA

    SKU: 12-677

    $95.00

This is a very interesting soft cover album that measures 9 1/4″ x 6.” It celebrates THE most elite German infantry regiment, the 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß (1.GRzF). This elite regiment was founded in 1688. It was garrisoned at Potsdam. It is where König Frederick the Great built his castle, Sanssouci, and where many of the most elite Prussian Garde-Regiments (including the Regiment der Garde du Corps) were based. Most of the regiment’s officers came from German royalty and nobility, as was the case with the Regiment der Garde du Corps. No regiment in the German Army has more à la suite officers than 1.GrzF. In the 1914 Rangliste, twenty plus à la suite officers are mentioned. All princes of the House of Hohenzollern were automatically enrolled in the regiment. Kaiser Wilhelm II’s six sons and his brother’s two boys accounted for eight of the regiment’s à la suite officers! Other high-ranking royals also belonged to the regiment. Another token of the high esteem in which the regiment was held was its headdress style. They were one of two regiments to wear a mitre for high dress occasions. Our album sports a simple brown cover. The pages are held together by an equally simple, string binding. [The cover is a bit fragile, so we suggest care when looking through the album. Perusing it on a flat surface, which places less strain on the covers and binding, will help preserve it all the more]. A brief history of the regiment from…

  • ALBUM BELONGING TO MANFRED VON RICHTHOFEN'S GREAT AUNT - Imperial German Military Antiques Sale

ALBUM BELONGING TO MANFRED VON RICHTHOFEN’S GREAT AUNT

    SKU: 15-32

    $1,595.00

Clara von Richthofen was the paternal great-aunt of Rittmeister Manfred von Richthofen. She was the sister of Julius Georg Ludwig, the father of Albrecht von Richthofen, who was the father of Manfred and Lothar von Richthofen. Clara was born in 1829 and died in Berlin 1909. This album which was presented to her in 1845 by a favorite uncle (a von Berenhorst). There are numerous entries mostly from the 1840’s and 1850’s. There is at least one item as late as the 1870’s. She married Guido von Busse in 1850, and although they were married for 38 years, she had no children; which is why this album would have passed down into the Red Baron’s family. This very high quality album, in which Clara made entries for many years, is the journal and art album of a young Prussian noblewoman starting at the age of sixteen. On the opposite page from the dedication by her Uncle is her autograph, “Clara von Richthofen.” As the album develops we see the art and writings of a romantic young woman. There are lithographs (colored and black and white) of places that she visited and people that she admired. Many of these images have captions which due to their age are somewhat faded. There are several poems sprinkled through the album. As you go through the album there are also several examples of pressed flowers and leaves which are surprisingly nice for being one hundred and fifty years old. There are also at least…

Each album has a total of TEN blank pages. They are very similar to what was used one-hundred-years ago. They can make a fine way in which to display your postcards or photographs. • BRAUNSCHWEIG - SALT POT - OFFICERS MESS - Imperial German Military Antiques Sale

BRAUNSCHWEIG – SALT POT – OFFICERS MESS

    SKU: 34-26

    $695.00

The dinner tables at officers’ messes were quite formal and elaborate, depending on the regiment. The officers’ messes at Husaren-Regiment Nr 17 and Infantrie-Regiment Nr 92 were among the most elaborate of all of the German Army regiments. Today we are offering an officer’s salt pot from one of these two regiments. Small salt pots were used in place of salt shakers during the Imperial Period, especially in an officer’s mess. Sometimes they had a small spoon that allowed the user to sprinkle salt onto his food. Other times no spoon was used, and a simple “pinch” of salt sufficed. This pot measures 1 ½” in diameter and stands 1″ tall. As I look at it, the pot reminds me of a miniature kettle drum. It has engraving on its three sides, which reveals a great deal about this interesting dining accouterment. On one side is the name Oberleutnant von Schierstaedt. On a second side is the Wilhelm of Braunschweig’s Cypher. The third side bears the date 1 November 1901. Underneath, on the pot’s bottom, is hallmarking for .800 silver and for Jurgens, the Herzog (Duke) of Braunschweig’s house jeweler. This piece has a lot of personality and a fabulous patina.

    FRANCE – PRINT – NAPOLEONIC – SILK

    SKU: 12-362

    $895.00

In recent months I have become far more interested in the Napoleonic Wars of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Napoleon Bonaparte was a magnetic leader who brought France to the brink of global domination during this period. By better understanding this time, it prepares the student of German history for the 19th Century’s last half. That is, the unification of Germany under Kaiser Wilhelm I and Otto von Bismarck. This, in turn, led to the German military buildup that helped contribute to WW I. Returning to the Napoleonic Wars, it is interesting how the victory of Great Britain and her allies solidified her position as the leading military power while European colonies spread throughout the world. Today we offer a novel piece of German art from the period of 1860 to 1890. It is a re-creation of the famous retreat by Napoleon and his army from Russia during a vicious Russian winter of 1814. Napoleon is sitting astride his horse in his classic pose: hand tucked into his tunic. He is at the head of his army as they retreat to Western Europe from Russia. He does no look like a happy camper! The suffering of the French Army as they retreated is nearly unimaginable. Then again, history often repeats itself. The German Army in WW II would suffer the same fate after the two front war was opened in 1941. What makes this piece interesting is its deceiving appearance. At first glance it appears to be a…

I am not quite sure what was the use for this oversized Iron Cross, although it appears to be of a patriotic nature. Having said that, it is quite large, measuring 3″ x 2 e.” It is about the size of a Grand Cross. It is stamped and has a loop at the top where it could have been worn as a pendant. However, this is huge! It would have taken up a LOT of space under a lady’s neck. It is stamped and there is a wreath of leaves that connects the arms of the cross. It is more likely that it was used as a wall decoration. This is definitely a different kind of item!

GERMANY – CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENT – PRE WWI – BALL-SHAPED

    SKU: 12-715

    $75.00

Christmas was a very special time of year for Imperial Germans (it still is). Today we are offering a significant Imperial German Christmas tree ornament. It is made of glass and is ball-shaped. As a matter of fact, it is just about the size of a golf ball (although I doubt that is what the ornament is supposed to represent)! The ornament measures 6 1/8″ in diameter. The ball is silver, with a dimpled exterior. Painted around the entire ornament are three red, white, and black stripes, representing Germany’s national colors. At the top is a typical ornament’s attachment through which a hook is placed to hang it on a Christmas tree. This marvelous ornament is very close to one-hundred-years-old. It would make a wonderful addition to your Christmas tree during the upcoming holidays, then you could display it with your collection for the rest of the year.

    GERMANY – COMMEMORATION – FRAMED – GERMAN SOLDIER’S WW I SERVICE

    SKU: 12-782

    $295.00

This is a marvelous framed commemoration of his service during WW I for a German soldier. The period frame is black with gold interior highlights, sports a glass front cover, and measures 19 ½” x 23 ½.” Kaiser Wilhelm II’s portrait appears at the extremely colorful print’s top. Flanking him are the Kings of Saxony and Bavaria, as well as the Grand Dukes of Baden and Hesse-Darmstadt. Decorative motifs that are both military and patriotic in nature cover the print. A careful examination reveals the figures of three soldiers whose heads have been replaced by pasted-in black and white photos of the same soldier. One pose reveals his shoulder straps, which are for Infanterie-Regiment Nr 66. An actual 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class has been pasted to the print’s bottom center. Clearly the featured soldier won it during WW I. The presentation’s overall condition is very fine. [Due to the size and nature of this item, additional shipping and handling will be required. This is an interesting crocheted piece celebrating the 500th anniversary of some event in Germany (1415-1915). I am not sure exactly what event it commemorates. It is designed to protect one’s hand when removing a hot dish from the oven, then serve as a hot pad to protect the table surface from the hot dish while it is being served. The piece measures 15 3/4″ x 9″ when opened up completely. A Hohenzollern Eagle is beautifully embroidered in the center of the outside flap, with the dates 1415 in the upper left corner and 1915 in the lower right. Lace decorates three sides of the flap. Underneath is the pocket into which one’s hand is placed to grasp the hot dish. It is both a practical and beautiful item, in excellent shape for its age. The embroidery is exquisite.

GERMANY – DOCUMENT – LUDENDORFF SPENDE

    SKU: 34-14

    $50.00

This is a document for a contribution to the “Ludendorff Spende.” It was a five-mark contribution to what I believe was a political action group furthering General Erich Ludendorff’s political ambitions. Ludendorff was the Chief of Staff to Generalfeldmarschall Paul von Hindenburg during WW I. He served in this position on the Eastern Front early in the war, and when von Hindenburg was called to command the armies of the Western Front later on. Ludendorff was the winner of the Pour le Mérite, the Pour le Mérite with Oak Leaves, and the1914 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross. After WW I, Ludendorff was an early supporter of Adolf Hitler. He participated in the 1923 Putsch, when the Nazis, with Hitler and Hermann Göring, attempted to overthrow the Bavarian government. This document, which measures 3 ½” x 5 ½” (approx. postcard-sized) recognized that the person named on the reverse has contributed five marks to the Ludendorff Spende. This colorful and impressive small document features a crowned Prussian Eagle, a 1914 Iron Cross and a reproduction signature of Ludendorff. Its reverse has the name of the contributor and a stamp for the organization.

    SKU: 34-89

Here is an interesting ladies’ accessory that was purchased at a well known Berlin military uniform shop. This small change purse joins the many different patriotic items available for soldiers’ wives, sweethearts, mothers, and sisters. It measures 4 ½” x 5″ and is cut from the same dark-blue wool material used for many German military uniforms. The firm’s label is revealed when its front flap is unsnapped. The label is attached to the flap’s black silk inner lining and reads “Wilhelm Braun/Berlin S.W. 61/Yorkstr. 16.” The flap’s dark-blue outer cover features the silver bullion used to decorate an NCO’s tunic sleeves. The bullion runs horizontally across the flap’s base and is surmounted by a red, then a yellow, miniature shoulder strap. The straps could represent any one of a number of Prussian Army Garde-Regiments. [For example, the red shoulder strap was used by, but not limited to, such units as the Kaiser Franz Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr 2, the Garde-Jäger-Bataillon, the Garde-Schützen-Bataillon, the 2. SKU: 34-91

    $50.00

PATRIOTIC DOILY/PLACE MAT CELEBRATING WW I ALLIED VICTORY. During WW I and shortly thereafter, patriotic objects were numerous and varied. As with so many wars, the initial enthusiasm and excitement soon devolved into grimness as the war years dragged on and on. By the war’s end, few families in Europe had not been affected by family members’ or friends’ deaths and the sheer horror of all-out war. While Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Turkey had little to celebrate, the Allies found validation in victory. The item we are offering today details the winning camp’s attitude. This 11″ x 14″ doily/place mat revels in the Allied victory. It features an exquisitely delicate lace background that contains an 8″ x 10″ pink satin frame several inches inside it. A smaller, 3″ x 4″ panel within the pink frame displays the date “1919.” Each of the date’s numbers has been stitched from the various, victorious Allies’ national flags. For example, Great Britain’s Union Jack appears on the initial “1,” along with Japan’s flag. France and Australia appear on the “9.” The second “1” features the USA’s flag by itself. [This is only a partial list. Most of the major nations that participated in the war, including Belgium, appear on the various numbers. Below the numbers is a legend that proclaims “Souvenir de France.” This lovely piece is in excellent condition.

This tray is most interesting. Its central motif shows Germany oldest general (Generalfeldmarschall, actually) of WW I, Graf von Haesler. This man, who was a cavalrymen, came from the Uhlans. He served Germany in four wars, in 1864, 1866, 1870, and in WW I. This serving tray has a wooden frame and wooden handles with brass trim. It measures 12 ½” x 7 7/8.” In the center under glass is a very colorful patriotic rendition of von Haesler with flags, banners, etc. Von Haesler is dressed in the feldgrau uniform of a Generalfeldmarschall. He is superimposed over an Iron Cross with the date 1914. In looking at this, I have come to the conclusion that this was at one time the lid of a cigar box. It was probably used to house fine Havana cigars! Today it can serve as a wonderful serving tray to hold your drinks when served at cocktail hour, or for any other purpose. Or, it would look neat on its own!

    GERMANY – PATRIOTIC TABLE/DRESSER SCARF – WESTERN FRONT MAP – 1914

    SKU: 34-94

    $95.00

PATRIOTIC TABLE/DRESSER SCARF – WESTERN FRONT MAP – 1914. This is a most unusual item. I would describe it as a table or dresser scarf that measures 22″ x 25 ½,” and takes the form of a multicolored map depicting the Western Front, including Belgium, France, and Western Germany. The legend listed below appears in the map’s lower left corner. Karte (Map) vom (of) Deutsch-Französischen (German-French) Kriegschauplatz (Theater of War) 1914 The map is made of thin, gauzy cotton, similar to what was used on many of the period’s military and patriotic flags. The flag features a wide red border on its edge, followed by smaller, red, black and white (Germany’s national colors) half-inch-wide borders surrounding the black and white map in its center. Numerous oak leaves (symbolizing German strength) are laid diagonally across these national color bands. The highly-detailed central map concentrates on the northern part of France, with most of Belgium, as well as the strip of Western Germany that shared its eastern border with France. City names are prominently displayed, as well as depictions of more hilly terrain. The scarf is in very fine condition, overall. With some creativity on the part of its new owner, it would make a fine addition to a WW I display.

    SKU: 12-713

    $250.00

This is a cast iron memorial war plaque that commemorates the Deutsche Legion (Kings German Legion [KGL]), which was formed in 1803 to fight in the Napoleonic Wars. It measures 7″ x 4 5/16,” and is shaped like a squared-off shield. The cast iron has been blackened, and sports a high-relief sculpture of a horse rearing above a defeated enemy. The fallen man has his shield lifted to protect himself from the horse’s hooves. The two are situated on a base that displays the Legion’s motto, “Nec Aspera Terrent” (Afraid of No Hardships) above 1803-1816. High-relief figures of some Legion members appear in a rectangular cutout beneath the lettering. The plaque is signed H. Wedemeyer on the plaque’s lower right side. The KGL was formed after the Electorate of Hannover was dissolved in 1803, the state having been taken over by Napoleon Bonaparte’s conquering French Army. Many Hanoverian Army officers and soldiers fled to England, since George III, Hannover’s deposed Elector, was England’s King. Soon after, the KGL was formed from these expatriate troops to become a mixed corps by 1803’s end. (A mixed corps includes all arms: mounted, infantry, and artillery). The KGL never fought as an autonomous unit, remaining under British Army command throughout the Napoleonic Wars (1804–15). It played a vital role in several campaigns, particularly the Walcheren Campaign, the Peninsular War, and the Hundred Days (1815).[It is now obvious that the rearing horse on this plaque represents the White Horse of Hannover]. The KGL was disbanded…

    SKU: 34-85

The Battle of Tannenberg was one of Germany’s most important WW I victories. German forces on the Eastern front were commanded by then-Generaloberst Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934). The battle took place 23-30 August 1914, between one German army and two Russian armies during WW I’sfirst month. The victory made von Hindenburg a hero in Germany, and he was showered with honors throughout the war. He ultimately became the Chief of the General Staff (Chef des Generalstabs) in 1916, and held that position until WW I’s end. Today we are offering a patriotic tablecloth that commemorates the German victory at the Battle of Tannenberg. The tablecloth measures 50″ x 57 ½.” The predominant color is light-blue on a white background. Each corner sports a large portrait of von Hindenburg in uniform wearing a Pour le Mérite. This is a most interesting oval-shaped display of uniform collar buttons, assorted other buttons, and other miscellaneous items. The display is in a wooden frame that measures 10” x 12,” and contains approximately thirty-five assorted burtons. Aside from these rank buttons, others include the buttons from shoulder straps that indicated an Infanterie Kompagnie, an Artillerie Battery, or a Kavallerie Eskadron. Also included are a smaller number of uniform buttons. Two officer’s kokarden are included from Bavaria, as well as two silver rank pips that are added for a decorative touch. One final point: while this is an interesting display, I do NOT believe that this is a period frame. Instead, it was assembled more recently for a collector’s enjoyment.

It has been years since we have offered a sophisticated example of German Imperial Period woodcarving. Without a doubt, this is one of the finest we have ever offered. During the Imperial Period, most of Europe’s finest hand woodcarving came from Germany and Austria. [The tradition is still practiced today primarily in Southern Germany (the Black Forest and Bavaria) and Northern Austria (the Tyrol)]. I cannot say with certainty whether our example originated in Austria or Germany, although it was done to commemorate Austria’s Hapsburg Empire. I date this fine example from 1875 up through 1918, when the Great War’s end resulted in the demise of Germany and Austria’s empires. The stunning Eagle measures 2″ x 21″ x 26,” and weighs a whopping 8 lbs. 4 oz. The carving is quite intricate, with exquisite detailing to its various feathers. The top crown has movement in it forwards and backwards, almost as though it is articulated. In the center of the Eagle’s chest is a glass-covered frame that measures 4 ½” x 6″ x 2,” and features a cabinet photograph of Kaiser Franz Josef of Austria with a reproduction signature. The reverse features three metal rings that form its hanger system. A very old cord is strung between them that once served as the actual hanger so it could be hung on a wall. I have waited many years for a large and exceptional carving to come…

    SKU: 12-759

    $50.00

This is a pen and ink drawing that highlights a Prussian Infanterie Regiment charge during the 1866 Austro-Prussian War’s Battle of Königgrätz. An officer with his sword drawn urges his troops forward as they attack Austrian positions. All of the soldiers are wearing 1860’s-style pickelhauben, which was shaped differently from the final 1897-style. The Battle of Königgrätz was the Austro-Prussian War’s penultimate battle, effectively ending the very short, sharp war. The drawing measures 7″ x 10″ and was produced by Bavarian artist/illustrator and university professor Anton Hoffman (1863-1938). [He specialized in history and military paintings, and illustrated many school and history books. He produced a series on the Bavarian Army’s uniforms and is still collected today, particularly among artistic postcards]. Thumb tack or small nail holes appear in the drawing’s corners from a previous attachment to a wall or display board. The firm’s name from which the drawing was purchased and a description of the action appears on its reverse.

It is a framed lithograph of Kaiser Wilhelm II in the field. It is a classic portrait of the Kaiser. Original photographs like this were dedicated and/or signed and placed in deluxe frames (including those topped by a Hohenzollern Crown) to make prized Kaiser presentation gifts. This is a good copy of the original photograph. The Kaiser stands in a generalfeldmarschall’s uniform, wearing a pickelhaube complete with its canvas cover. Below his image is a dedication and his reproduced signature, dated 1916. The lithograph, which measures 7 1/4″ x 6,” is housed in a modern-day frame measuring 13 1/4″ x 10.” This is a consignment item.

PRUSSIA – LITHOGRAPH – FRAMED COLOR – EARLY MOUNTED GARDE du CORPS OFFICER

    SKU: 12-427

    $125.00

This is a fascinating color lithograph of a mounted officer from the Regiment der Garde du Corps. It is from the Napoleonic War Period. His headdress is much different from what we are used to with the Regiment der Garde du Corps since this, of course, was prior to the use of pickelhauben. The officer is mounted on a spirited steed and wears his küraß over his tunic. The Garde Star adorns his horse blanket. A küraßier’s sword hangs at his waist. In the picture’s background, the infantry is advancing. The framed presentation measures 8 3/4″ x 7 1/4.” The image inside the frame measures 12″ x 9 ½.” It is difficult to say from what period the frame dates, however, my best guess is that it was framed between 1900 and 1930. It reveals honest aging. The lithograph inside the frame may be even older, from the paper’s appearance. A hanger is attached to the reverse. This one is ready to go up on the wall.

This is a fascinating, framed, color lithograph of King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia. Friedrich Wilhelm III was the King of Prussia during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. He was also the king who instituted the 1813 Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd Class. The lithograph was produced by a Berlin firm. The framed item measures 17 3/4″ x 12 3/4.” It is possible that this example and the one listed below were used as plates in a book, or perhaps they were produced individually. I estimate that both were produced, then framed around 1900 to 1910. The frames certainly are old, but not so old as to hail from Friedrich Wilhelm III’s time.

    SKU: 12-618

    $125.00

This is an interesting painting on wood, showing an officer from Prussia’s Küraßier-Regiment von Seydlitz (Magdeburgisches) Nr 7. The regiment was founded in 1815. It was garrisoned at Quedlinburg and Halberstadt, and attached to the IV. ArmeeKorps. The wooden panel measures 12 1/2″ x 10.” Holes appear at the top and bottom, probably from where it was attached to a wall. The painting of the officer is multicolored. It shows him mounted on a horse, wearing his full parade uniform. This includes his uniform and küraß. Yellow appears on his collar, sabertache, and his horse’s blanket. This identifies him to the Küraßier-Regiment von Seydlitz (Magdeburgisches) Nr 7. Some scraping has affected the wood in the past, but the young officer’s image was not harmed. The reverse features the unit’s identification.

    $150.00

This is a small framed photograph of a 19th Century Prussian officer. The period frame measures 5” x 6 1/2.” The frame features three different colors in the molding. It has a very Victorian look to it. The colorized photo measures 3 1/2” x 5.” It depicts a Prussian officer in profile. Interestingly, he shows NO shoulder boards or epaulettes on his tunic, which, from its cut, is an überrock. The officer’s name appears on the reverse. His name appears to be “Alexander von . . .” I cannot make out the rest. He attained the rank of Generalleutnant and lived from 1807-1894. So, it is certain that he fought in the 1864 Danish-Prussian War, the 1866 Austro-Prussian War, and the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian-War. More historical details about him appear on the reverse’s bottom.Overall, its condition is quite good for being more than one-hundred years-old.

    SKU: 12-722

    $225.00

The 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War was the final piece in the puzzle completing Germany’s unification, culminating in Prussian König Wilhelm I’s coronation as Germany’s Kaiser Wilhelm I. This very important event capped three men’s campaign to make Prussia the Reich’s ruling kingdom. Today we are offering with you a framed presentation of those three important figures in small color paintings. The overall dimensions of the simple wooden frame are 11 3/8″ x 18 7/8.” In the middle is Kaiser Wilhelm I. He is standing outside, wearing a küraßier officer’s überrock. One can see a generalfeldmarschall’s crossed batons and an Iron Cross ribbon in the tunic’s buttonhole. To Wilhelm I’s left is the process’s military genius, Generalfeldmarschall Helmuth von Moltke. He served as Wilhelm I’s Chief of the General Staff during the various German states’ consolidation. Von Moltke is seated at his desk in uniform as he works through the army’s weighty matters. He oversaw the Prussian Army during the Second Schleswig War of 1864, also known as the Prussian-Danish War. He helmed the Prussian Army in the next conflict, the 1866 Austro-Prussian War. It led to Prussia absorbing the states of Hannover, Braunschweig, Nassau, etc., and pretty much set up Germany’s various kingdoms and states as they would remain in the Empire. Von Moltke’s final war as Chief of the General Staff was during 1870-1871, when Germany’s combined and modernized army rolled over the French forces, captured Versailles, and arrived at Paris’ gates by the war’s end. Von Moltke left Germany…

Virginia shelling Union frigates on 8 March 1861 at Hampton Roads, VA. On that date the Virginia sank two Union frigates. On the morning of 9 March 1862, the Virginia, more commonly known as the Merrimack (her Union name before she was scuttled and raised by the CSA to be rebuilt as an ironclad) met the U. S. S. Monitor in the first battle of iron ships. This revolutionized the world’s navies. The two vessels fought to a draw. Nevertheless, sailing vessels were soon replaced by iron vessels. The lower lithograph, which measures 11 1/4″ x 6 1/4,” shows Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, SC in 1863. Fort Sumter was shelled in April 1861 by CSA forces and the Union garrison surrendered. This lithograph shows the Fort occupied by CSA troops and being shelled by a Union Naval Fleet.
