    BAVARIA – HANDBUCH – 1900 MILITÄR=HANDBUCH

    SKU: 12-679

    $175.00

This is the Bavarian Army’s 1900 Militär=Handbuch. It is an amazing book that covers all aspects of the Bavarian Army for the year 1900. It goes far beyond just listing the various units from the ArmeeKorps, Division, Brigade, Regiment, and other levels. It lists historical aspects of the Bavarian royalty. It has a listing of the better-known Bavarian decorations. In the case of the Military Max Josef Order, it displays the various classes of this very important decoration, as well as a listing of its recipients, and award dates through 1900. The volume measures 8 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ x 1/4,” and weighs 1 pound and 10 ounces. I guess the easiest way to describe this volume is to say that it is a Rangliste on steroids! That is, it contains much more detail and information than the ordinary rank list. It is a very difficult-to-find volume. If you have an interest in the Bavarian Army, the book is a must. Many of its senior officers served in the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War, while many of the junior and mid-level officers went on to serve in WW I fourteen years later. [SALES ON ALL RANGLISTEN ARE FINAL. We do NOT send them out on approval, or for someone to do research and then return them. Please keep this in mind when ordering any rangliste].

He joined the army in 1917 and was initially assigned to a Bavarian Luftschiffer Ersatz Abteilung. The militärpaß has a flip down page where you can see his complete service for nearly two years of WW I. In addition to numerous unit stamps from his initial unit, a stamp for his assignment to Feldluftschiffer-Abteilung Nr 1 is also present. A unit stamp for a Prussian Luftschiffer-Abteilung also appears, which I find particularly interesting. The militärpaß comes in a protective jacket. It has a wealth of material to research and dig into.

BRAUNSCHWEIG – TELEGRAPHS – LEATHER ALBUM

    SKU: 12-760

    $195.00

This is an oversized leather album that measures 2 1/4″ x 10″ 12.” The album cover bears the high-relief, crowned royal cypher of Braunschweig’s Prince Ernst August II. Under that is the date, 29 May 1897. [At this particular point in time, the ruling family was not actually IN a position to rule, as Braunschweig and Hannover had been annexed by Prussia following the 1866 Austro-Prussian War. Braunschweig remained under the direct rule of Prince Albrecht from Prussia’s royal House of Hohenzollern until his death in 1906]. A water stain appears on the album’s lower left. At one point, a locking mechanism held the album closed. Part of this mechanism remains, but part is missing. The lock no longer operates. Inside the album, we see that some photos and/or other documents were removed from the page. Following that we see a series of twenty telegrams featuring the names of a Leutnant von Lind and a General von Schkopp. I could find no mention of Leutnant von Lind in my brief research, but I did see a General Bernard von Schkopp (1817-1904) who served as a general during the Franco-Prussian War. He was involved in commanding troops at the Battle of Wörth and at Paris. A Freiherr von Frentz is also mentioned. (Two Generalleutnants by the name of von Frentz served in the army during WW I). While I have not spent a great deal of time with these telegrams, Husaren-Regiment Nr 17 and 2. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 2 are mentioned. (The…

FLYBOYS: A STORY OF COURAGE BY JAMES BRADLEY

    SKU: 16-441

    $20.00

This is a hardcover, English-language book that was published in 2003. The book, which has nearly four hundred pages, deals with aspects of the Pacific Air War. Most of the pilots and men who are written about here were not well-known, beyond having endured the war’s terrible strain and having performed heroically. (They would never admit to the latter). The one exception was the young pilot of an Avenger Torpedo Bomber who crashed in the Pacific and was rescued by a submarine crew. The young George H. W. Bush went on later to become an United States President. The book contains numerous photos of many participants from both sides. Some are from back in the day, and others from well after WW II when, as old men, they met and became friends. [Here is an interesting note about the author, James Bradley. Before writing this book, he wrote Flags of our Fathers, the story of the U.S. Marines and Navy Corpsman who raised the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima. The latter book became the basis of a movie directed by Clint Eastwood. At the same time, Eastwood also directed Letters From Iwo Jima, which recounted the battle from the Japanese perspective. I personally found it to be a very enlightening tale about the Japanese soldier. As a child of the 50’s and 60’s, I watched many American-made movies from the 1941-1945 period (and later), which presented the Japanese in a very unflattering manner. Although one can understand and sympathize with…

More uniform plates appear in this “manual.” Other clipped photographs show Schutztruppen around the world. The presentation has been neatly done. BOOK – MIT DEM ZEPPELIN NACH AMERIKA BY LUDWIG DETTMANN. It is a very rare German language book that is illustrated by the noted German landscape and aviation artist, Ludwig Dettmann (1865-1944). Dettmann received training at one of Berlin’s finest art schools before the turn of the 20th Century. He had the opportunity to fly with the Graf Zeppelin (LZ 127) on its maiden flight from Germany to the United States in October 1928. He had a firsthand opportunity to view the crew and passengers of the Graf Zeppelin as it made its historic Atlantic crossing. Aside from the text, it contains more than 50 images that range from pen and ink to black and white to full-color. Each image has been reproduced from its original painting and sketch and photographically affixed to the blank page. These images are of varying sizes and depict the story of that Atlantic crossing. Several show Dr. Hugo Eckener and his aircrew as they guided the Graf Zeppelin on her journey. Eckener was the one-time assistant to the Zeppelin Company’s founder, Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838-1917). Following the Graf’s death, Eckener assumed control of the company. After WW I, he managed to build a zeppelin that was coded as LZ 126. This was, in fact, the future U.S.S. Los Angeles, which was turned over to the U.S. Navy as part of Germany’s war reparations to the Allies. Eckener was an engineering genius at building airships, as well as a showman who flew aboard both…

GERMANY – BOOK – REGIMENTAL HISTORY OF RESERVE-INFANTERIE-REGIMENT Nr 212

    SKU: 12-786

    $75.00

It became very popular to compile unit histories of those regiments that had served in the Great War. This German-language book describes Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment Nr 212’s history. The book was published in 1933 in Oldenburg. A brief scan of the book, which was written in old fashioned Fraktur script, reveals that the regiment was assigned to the 45. Reserve-Division. Its first commander was Oberst von Basedow, who was placed in charge when the regiment was created in October 1914. He was followed by Oberstleutnant von Fransden, who assumed command of the regiment in 1915. The book is liberally illustrated with photos of the officers and men at various times of the war from 1914-1918. The book’s early part features photos of the commander of the Regiment, the Brigade, the Division, and the Armeekorps to which it was assigned. It gives detailed information about where the regiment fought. One of book’s real highlights is a large map that is slipped into a holder on its back cover. While not one of the Army’s more important or older regiments, the regiment fought bravely and sustained heavy casualties. You will find the book helpful for tracking a front-line regiment’s activities. The book measures 2″ x 6″ x 9,” and has nearly eight hundred pages. It weighs 2 pounds and 1 ounces. The book’s index has a complete roster of officers for each Bataillon and company. The attrition it suffered is frightful. The company commanders who led charges across No Mans Land suffered major battle…

BOOK – THE BLUE MAX – JACK D. HUNTER – FIRST EDITION. The Blue Max by Jack D. Hunter was a highly-successful, WW I-aviation novel. It was made into a hit movie featuring George Peppard, James Mason, and Ursula Andress in the mid-1960’s. For many of us interested in WW I aviation, it was the book and/or movie that fueled our interest in this area of Imperial German history and collectibles. Today we are offering a hard-to-find first edition of The Blue Max. Since it was Jack’s first book, his publishers were willing to print ONLY 5,000 copies. Furthermore, they refused to produce the book’s dust jackets in color, since they would have to pay an artist to produce the design. Jack, an amateur artist, offered to paint an original color design for the cover himself, which provides an early example of Jack’s painting ability. The cover’s primary subject is a black Fokker D. VII, the plane flown by its central character, Bruno Stachel. [In real life, Eduard Ritter von Schleich, the “Black Knight of Germany” flew a similar plane, although it lacked the crude epithet Jack had his edgy antihero Stachel emblazon on HIS plane’s upper wing (all the better to agitate Stachel’s English opponents). $25.00

This is a hard cover book that was published in 1975. It is long out-of-print. It measures 8 ½” x 10″ x ½” and has a dust jacket. The book deals principally with documents, posters, and postcards for most of the primary combatants from both the Allies and the Central Powers. I was especially interested in the propaganda aspect from these types of items. Propaganda was not something that was used by only one country or by one side or another. It was widely used to motivate people to participate willingly and enthusiastically in the war effort. One piece in particular remains with me. It was a recruiting poster or newspaper advertisement from England in September 1914. The gist of the advertisement was that “Sportsmen” were wanted for a “Hunting Expedition to Berlin.” All expenses would be paid for hotels and railways costs. It was also mentioned that rifles and bullets would be provided free of cost! This depicts the naïveté of the war’s first month. Typically in the first year of a conflict, it was always said that the war would be over quickly and all the boys would be home for Christmas. It was NOT the case for WW I as it was five Christmases before most of the boys returned home, leaving behind millions who had fallen for their countries and would never enjoy another Christmas. The liberally illustrated book is a good read.

It was published very early in WW I as an attempt to educate and/or create propaganda. [You, the reader, will need to decide which is which]! The book covers Kaiser Wilhelm II’s speeches from 1889 into early 1914. The last speech, in June 1914, was at Hamburg and echoes the famous quote made by the Iron Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck, at the Reichstag on 6 February 1888: “We Germans fear God, but nothing else in the world.” [At that time Wilhelm II was still a Prinz (not yet the Kronprinz), as Wilhelm I did not die until March 1888. Wilhelm’s father, Friedrich III then ruled Germany for a mere ninety nine days. Then, in June 1888, Wilhelm II took to Germany’s throne, the last of his line to do so]. Von Bismarck’s quote echoed forward through time until the German Empire fell in 1918. The book contains more than 300 pages. Two images of Kaiser Wilhelm II, which measure 4 ½” x 7 ½,” appear at the book’s end. The book’s binding is in poor condition, so care should be taken when handling and/or reading it. BOOK – THE GREAT WAR IN THE AIR: MILITARY AVIATION FROM 1909-1921 BY JOHN H. MORROW, JR. This absorbing book was published in 1993. John Morrow presents a fine historical viewpoint of military aviation from 1909 to 1921. In 1909, six years after the Wright Brothers’ historical flight at Kitty Hawk, European and United States officials began to consider whether or not fixed wing aircraft might be useful during military operations. When WW I arrived, aircraft’s first role was to scout enemy positions. As the war progressed, opposing pilots began to shoot at one another with pistols, rifles, and shotguns. Soon, an enterprising French pilot decided to armor his airplane’s propeller and shoot a machine gun through it. [That did NOT work well! The enterprising French airman shot himself down]. The great Tony Fokker further developed the Frenchman’s idea, inventing an interrupter gear that allowed German aircraft to fire only when the propeller was NOT in the line of fire. This fantastic modification soon had airplanes falling from the skies at record levels. More innovations quickly followed. Larger airplanes became bombers, dropping increasingly massive bomb loads on assorted targets. At the same time, the German Army and Navy were sending zeppelins on bombing missions over England and the Continent. And all the while, everyone’s planes kept getting faster and more deadly. The book gives a fine overview of the operations and advancing of military planes during WW I. While it includes some photographs, the author focuses one’s attention on the…

    SKU: 12-562

    $25.00

This is a wonderful, English-language book that explores the Imperial German Army’s final massive offensive in the spring of 1918. The Germans, British, and French had been hammering at one another for nearly four years. Fresh troops from the USA now were approaching the Western Front. The German High Command realized if Germany wanted to win the war, they needed to break the Allies before the fresh troops arrived to turn the tide. It very nearly happened, but the Allies prevailed in the end. The book recounts the action. It was released in 1999. This illustrated copy is in MINT condition. It comes complete with dust jacket.

This is an engrossing, German-language biography of Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838-1917). Von Zeppelin had cultivated a longtime interest in airships before he even thought of producing them. He came to the USA as an observer of the Union Army’s balloon operations during 1863. Although he was still a German Army officer, he did not have an overly successful career. He retired as a Generalmajor in about 1890. It was then that he began his airship production efforts in earnest. The German public was captivated by the sight of zeppelins flying across Germany. The German public was always generous and supportive of efforts to advance German aviation. After one of the early zeppelins crashed, a large donation program was begun and a substantial sum raised. This enabled von Zeppelin to further his experiments and develop bigger and better airships. Prior to WW I more than 30,000 Germans flew on more than zeppelin 1,500 flights, with no substantial problems. As the clouds of WW I began to form, the German Army and Navy realized the zeppelins’ potential for scouting and bombing roles. The Navy had a higher profile with zeppelins than did the Army. While their actual contribution to the war effort was more psychological than material, the zeppelins did leave their mark. Peter Strasser, commander of the Navy Zeppelins (1876-1918), was a hero in Germany. For his efforts, he was awarded with the presentation of the Orden Pour le Mérite. Strasser died in a fiery crash in 1918, while leading…

Its back cover shows a crow atop a compass weathervane, shedding tears beneath the saying “Farewell Party.” Below are the words meaning “the end,” or “finally!” with Latin and Hebrew affirmations. “Penne” means school. In just a few months, most of these boys would be off to war, and many of the boyish dreams in this booklet would never come to pass.

CIGARETTE CARD ALBUM – WELTKRIEG 1914 /1918 This is a consignment item. It is one of the very popular cigarette card albums that were published in Imperial Germany. It was common for cigarette manufacturers to include a cigarette card with a pack of cigarettes as a premium. Many people had an interest in collecting the entire series of cards, so complete albums were offered to the public. Generally, an interesting story about the subject accompanied the cards. This album is quite different in that the cigarette cards were far larger than those we normally see. It contains eighty five cards that measure 3 ½” x 4 ½.” The album itself measures 10” x 11 ½.” Its cover displays the legend “Weltkrieg 1914 1918,” and an oversized Iron Cross. The war’s time frames and theaters are featured throughout the album. It includes sections concerning von Hindenburg, von Mackensen, and Ludendorff. On the naval side we find Graf Spee, and Admiral Scheer, who commanded the High Seas Fleet at the Battle of Jutland and later headed the Kaiserliche Marine. Sections are also featured on the U Boot ace Otto Weddigen, and Generalmajor von Lettow Vorbeck, the hero of East Africa who did not surrender until after WW I had ended. All cards are in place, along with some interesting maps and diagrams at the back. [One final factoid: when this album was published it cost .90 Reichs Marks]!

This is a document for a contribution to the “Ludendorff Spende.” It was a five-mark contribution to what I believe was a political action group furthering General Erich Ludendorff’s political ambitions. Ludendorff was the Chief of Staff to Generalfeldmarschall Paul von Hindenburg during WW I. He served in this position on the Eastern Front early in the war, and when von Hindenburg was called to command the armies of the Western Front later on. Ludendorff was the winner of the Pour le Mérite, the Pour le Mérite with Oak Leaves, and the1914 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross. After WW I, Ludendorff was an early supporter of Adolf Hitler. He participated in the 1923 Putsch, when the Nazis, with Hitler and Hermann Göring, attempted to overthrow the Bavarian government. This document, which measures 3 ½” x 5 ½” (approx. postcard-sized) recognized that the person named on the reverse has contributed five marks to the Ludendorff Spende. This colorful and impressive small document features a crowned Prussian Eagle, a 1914 Iron Cross and a reproduction signature of Ludendorff.      This group has a letter soliciting information about the demolition of zeppelin hangars in Frankfort, a one page ad for a new (1960’s) zeppelin service in Frankfort, the three magazines from an airship navigation society, and the envelope in which the information was delivered. The letter is from Herr J. A. Becker, a member of the Verein Für Luftschiffahrt e.V. Landesgruppe Hessen (Society for Airship Navigation – Hessian State Group). He is writing to a Herr Otto Jung regarding some photos the latter sent to Becker. [Cordial thanks for sending us…

GERMANY – MAGAZINE – DER DEUTSCHE SPORTFLIEGER

    SKU: 16-281

    $60.00

This is a large-format German-language magazine, which measures 12″ x 9.” It is from April 1936, the heyday of pre WW II German aviation. Germany was still operating its two airships, the Graf Zeppelin and the Hindenburg. A portion of this edition devotes itself to information on the LZ 129 Hindenburg. Barely a year would pass until May 1937 when this amazing airship would explode in flames at Lakehurst, NJ. Many photos in the magazine show the Hindenburg under construction. Many photographs and stories about civil aviation in Germany are included, as well as some of the unusual airplanes and gliders that were produced. Photographs of Hermann Göring and Ernst Udet also appear. A large photograph on the back cover shows Göring and other officials of the newly formed Luftwaffe at the grave of Manfred von Richthofen in Berlin. [After WW I his body was removed from its original grave in France and taken to Berlin]. It is a most interesting magazine. It also has a large number of advertisements, some aviation-related, and some not.

This was a magazine that was published in Germany before WW I which dealt with Zeppelins. It is a large format magazine that has numerous articles about Zeppelins and their development in Germany during this period. There are numerous photos and there is also a great deal of advertising that I find very interesting. Some of the advertising includes motors from Mercedes-Benz, aircraft and flying lessons from Ago, etc. These magazines are professionally done very slick and would be a unique addition to a Zeppelin collection. I have two different issues which are December 1912 and April 1914.

The Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung was Berlin’s most popular news periodical. It was a large-format publication that measured 11″ x 15.” It was produced on a weekly basis. This is the 5 November 1916 issue. The cover shows a crashed observation plane on the Italian Front, with men peering into the cockpit. Inside, we see many interesting stories and photos of war developments. I particularly like a large photograph, covering two-thirds of an entire page, that features Generalfeldmarschall August von Mackensen riding his horse. He is accompanied by an aide wearing 1. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 1’s uniform. One of the things that I personally enjoy in these editions is all of the advertising that deals with the many goods and services available at the time. It has ads for patriotic rings, (examples of which we have carried in the past and still have listed), military watches, Daimler Benz cars, and Mercedes airplane engines. This is just great stuff! GERMANY – NEWSPAPER – BERLINER LOKAL-ANZEIGER SPECIAL EDITION DATED SUNDAY, 28 JUNE 1914: ANNOUNCING ARCHDUKE FRANZ FERDINAND OF AUSTRIA’S ASSASSINATION IN SERBIA

    SKU: 12-787

    $45.00

This is a special edition that was published free-of-charge, announcing the assassination of Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Grand Duchess Sophie, in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. In all practicality, he was that country’s Crown Prince. [Franz Ferdinand was Emperor Franz-Josef’s nephew rather than his son. Franz-Josef’s son, Kronprinz Rudolf, had committed suicide in 1889. Franz Ferdinand became the heir to the Austrian throne upon the passing of his father Archduke Karl Ludwig, in 1896]. The deaths of Franz Ferdinand and Sophie served as the spark that began WW I. Following that assassination, Austria-Hungary issued an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia. When its demands were not met, Austria-Hungry declared war on Serbia. Because of assorted existing European alliances, Russia, Great Britain, and France reciprocated by declaring war on Austria-Hungry. Germany then came to her ally Austria-Hungary’s aide by declaring war on the opposition. War officially began on 28 July 1914. Subsequently, Italy, a previous ally of Austria-Hungry, defected to joined the Russians, French, and English, as did Japan. Ultimately, the USA also declared war on Germany in 1917. Turkey and Bulgaria sided with the Germans and Austrians. This one-page special-edition also has a lengthy message from Kaiser Franz-Josef. It would look very impressive if framed–perhaps accompanied by another Great War artifact.

The cancellations and the special stamp are quite interesting. This is FAR rarer than a postcard or letter that was flown on a 1920’s or 1930’s zeppelin. This is an Officer’s Schreibmappe from 1904. This was used by an officer as a writing and mapping booklet. Throughout the Schreibmappe are many advertisements that helped underwrite some its production costs. It contains a lot of military and non military information that was useful to an officer on a daily basis. It has such things as prices for mailing letters and packages, and sending telegrams. A section is included with a calendar, and important dates, holidays, etc. for 1904. Another section delineates each of the German states along with their then-current rulers. Following that is a section showing the German Army’s organization in 1904. It shows organization from Armee-Korps to division to brigade, down to regiment. A comprehensive section for the Kaiserliche Marine shows its organization. This is a wonderful research tool even100 years later. While I cannot cover it all, it even features information on the required and optional articles of uniform, headdress, etc. for officers, as well as information on ranks, and even retirement. This is one handy little book that measures 14 1/4″ x 9 1/2.”

    SKU: 21-298

    $125.00

This is an envelope that was flown on the first flight of the Graf Zeppelin from Germany to the U.S. The Graf Zeppelin entered service in 1928. It was a major effort for the company, which struggled financially after the Graf Zeppelin’s death in 1917 and the war’s end. Hugo Eckner assumed the company’s control after the Graf’s death and navigated the company through a difficult period. He convinced the German government to include building a zeppelin to count toward German war reparations. Thus, theLZ-124 was constructed. Eckner personally commanded it in an historic 1924 flight and, with a great deal of publicity, turned it over to the U.S. Navy to become the U.S.S. Los Angeles. The historic flight began in Friedrichshafen, and ended in Lakehurst, NJ, a U.S. Navy station. Lakehurst was the East Coast base for zeppelin operations. The Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg landed there. The Hindenburg landed for the last time as a fireball at Lakehurst in 1937. The U.S.S. Los Angeles continued in service until 1940, partly because it ran on the much safer helium, while the German zeppelins were forced to use highly flammable hydrogen due to the U.S.’s embargo. Today we are offering a very special zeppelin-flown envelope. It was flown aboard the LZ-127 Graf Zeppelin on its FIRST flight from Germany to the U.S. It is a deluxe envelope prepared just for the event. A yellow zeppelin that covers most of its top width is preprinted on the envelope. A special blue German…

HISTORY OF AVIATION: 50 OF THE GREATEST AIRCRAFT IN THE HISTORY OF FLIGHT

    SKU: 16-345

    $35.00

This is an English-produced book from, I would guess, the 1960’s or 1970’s. It chronicles what the author feels are the 50 greatest aircraft in history. It features a write-up about each of the various aircraft, which is then adorned with a small card displaying its picture. The card measures 5″ x 7 1/2,” and is pasted in with the description. Does this sound familiar? Yes, it is very similar to the German cigarette card albums of the 1920’s and 1930’s. I will not attempt to list all the aircraft, but among them are the Fokker D. VII, Montgolfier Balloon (?), ME 262, and Lockheed Tristar. On the back cover it says that the cards were given free with the purchase of Brooke Bond Tea and tea bags.

This is the Spanish edition of The Blue Max. The hit book, published in 1964, was made into a 20th Century Fox blockbuster starring George Peppard, James Mason, and Ursula Andress. It clearly is the best novel about German WW I aviation written-to-date. It paves the way for all others, as we watch Bruno Stachel attempt to rise from his humble origins by winning the Orden Pour le Mérite. Stachel is utterly ruthless as he claws his way to his goal, regardless of the cost to others. After the publication of Mr. Hunter’s books in the U.S. and Great Britain, he was published all over the world. This Spanish first-edition was published in 1966. It is complete with a dust jacket and is in very good condition, overall.

NEWSPAPER ANNOUNCEMENT – OSWALD BOELCKE’S 19th AERIAL VICTORY

    SKU: 16-354

    $125.00

This is a newspaper from June 1916. The headline boldly announces Oswald Boelcke’s 19th victory. Boelcke had been awarded the Orden Pour le Mérite in January 1916, along with Max Immelmann. Boelcke’s 19th victory actually took place on 27 June 1916. His victim was a French Nieuport. Number 19 is important, as it was his last in FA 62. [Max Immelmann, who achieved fifteen total victories, had fallen eleven days earlier on 18 June 1916. Boelcke then became the “ace of aces.” His final score of forty victories was not surpassed until 13 April 1917 when Manfred von Richthofen, Boelcke’s pupil, achieved forty-one victories]. All nineteen of Boelcke’s victories up to 27 June 1916 had taken place in FA 62. It is historically important to note that Boelcke’s next victory took place on 2 September 1916, after he had assumed Jasta 2’s command. It was a result of changes he had instituted, using dedicated squadrons of single-seater aircraft, which we call fighter planes today. The front page deals with other war news. The four-page Berlin paper is filled with articles and maps of the action. Page four has some interesting advertisements, including the “Herzog Ernst August Constantin-Cigarette,” and an ad for a 100,000-Mark lottery. It is an interesting piece of history.

    PRUSSIA – CALENDAR – FOUR KAISERS – YEAR 1889

    SKU: 12-683

    $75.00

This is an interesting patriotic item that comes from the year 1889. During the previous year, Germany had three Kaisers sit upon its throne. The first was Wilhelm I. Upon his death, his son Friedrich III assumed the throne. Friedrich III held the throne for less than 100 days, since he was already stricken with terminal cancer. (He frequently is referred to as “The 100-Day-Kaiser” in Germany). Friedrich was followed by his son, Wilhelm II. These three men appear at the calendar’s top, (this item appears to be a fan). A Kaiser Crown appears above Wilhelm I’s head, who is in the middle. All three men are dressed in military uniforms. Between them we see the young Kronprinz Wilhelm, who would have been Germany’s fourth Kaiser, had his father, Kaiser Wilhelm II, not abdicated Germany’s throne in 1918. Below the young prince is a German Eagle. The entire fan measures 11 ½”” x 8″(at its widest point). At the bottom (what could be the fan’s handle) a complete 12-month 1889 calendar is attached. The calendar itself measures 3 3/16″ x 2 5/16.” When I first looked at the calendar, I felt something was not quite right. That was when I noticed that it was in English rather than German! My theory is that it was produced in the U.S. for use by German-Americans. The entire presentation is quite elaborate and very colorful. I count at least six different colors. A small hole above the crown at the top will allow…

    $275.00

This is a very rare calling card from Otto von Bismarck, Chancellor to all three German Kaisers, Wilhelm I, Friedrich III, and Wilhelm II (if only briefly with the last). Initially he was Prussia’s Chancellor. Bismarck’s early career coincided with Germany’s growth and consolidation. Once Germany was unified under Prussia’s Wilhelm I as Germany’s first Emperor in 1871 (following the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War), Bismarck continued as the Imperial Chancellor. He remained in that position during Friedrich III’s brief reign. When Wilhelm II became Kaiser, however, the two men had major disagreements about Germany’s future direction. It was clear that they could not work together and von Bismarck was “retired.” The calling card is white and measures 2 1/8″ x 3 1/2.” The card is engraved in black ink and states very simply: “Fürst von Bismarck Reichskanzler” When I hold this card, I just tingle at the thought that von Bismarck may have presented it to someone himself.

If you are looking for something a bit unusual from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, this is it. This item is laid out as a book, but an unusual one since it has a hollow interior. The exterior is a very fine leather. The front cover bears the title “Kriegs-Despeschen 1870 & 71” with a full-sized 1870 Iron Cross. The faux pages are gilt edged, which is classic high-quality for book pages. A brass snap appears on the book’s side; when it is released, the interior of the “book” is revealed. Inside are four compartments which hold playing card-sized cards. These are reproductions of the official war dispatches that were issued during 1870 to 1871 describing the conduct of the war and the official news. I guess you could call this CNN-of-the-day in a box! These dispatches were released as posters or handbills so the citizens could see how their army was performing in France during this short-lived war. The four compartments hold, I would estimate, approximately 350+ of these various cards. I will photograph just a small sampling of these cards. I have not looked at them all. It will be up to the new owner to discover what treasures lie within. You will have hours of fun with this. I can assure you!

PRUSSIA – EHRENRANGLISTE DER KAISERLICHE DEUTSCHEN MARINE – 1914-1918

    SKU: 13-795

    $495.00

Both the German Army and Navy produced annual publications that showcased their various units and to which ones officers were assigned. (As a matter of fact, they shared a single book in the 1860’s, before Germany’s consolidation and a new Kaiser greatly increased their sizes). Ranglistes are very useful tools for researching officers and their assignments at given times within their careers. One of the most useful of the books was the one that showed the combined results during the years of WW I (1914-1916). Both the Army and Navy produced such a book after WW I. The navy was always the smaller branch, with fewer officers. This was further influenced by the larger numbers of army officers killed in action. Today we are offering the Ehrenrangliste der Kaiserliche Deutschen Marine (Honor Rank List for the Imperial German Navy), which covers the years 1914 through 1918. The book was published in 1930. It is quite large, measuring 8 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ x 3 1/4″ and weighing a hefty 4 lb. 7 ounces. With it, you can seek out a particular officer and determine his rank, what ships or other assignments wherein he served, etc. These books are quite helpful and hard-to-find. I have seen these fetch nearly $1,000 in the past. The binding on our example is a bit weak, so caution should be exercised when using it (which should go without saying for an eighty-year-old book. Several pages showcase their various models. The blades exhibit various levels of engraving. Even Damascus blades are listed. I see full daggers ranging from 30 to 70 Marks for a dagger with a Damascus blade. Farther along are such things as officers’ belts, belts with hangers, and portépées. [My mouth really watered when I saw a Konteradmiral’s epaulettes for 70.50 marks! His daily-use uniform’s shoulder boards cost 13.75 marks]. Lüneberg’s also sold miniatures of decorations that could be attached to tie chains. SKU: 12-690

    $150.00

This is a very early (1835) rangliste for the Kingdom of Prussia. It is officially known as the “Rang und Quartier=Liste.” As the Prussian Army was relatively small at the time, the book is small. It is a soft cover book measuring 4″ x 6 ½” x 2.” The title page has an Iron Cross on it. Its index page indicates that a total of eight ArmeeKorps existed in 1835. Further, Prussia had about forty-five infantry, thirty-five cavalry, and eight artillery regiments. The Prussian Navy’s officers were listed on a single page, as they had only TWO officers! It is a most helpful book for research, as many of the officers from the Napoleonic Wars were still on active duty. Doing a quick bit of research, we see that Capitaine von Damitz is shown in Infanterie-Regiment Nr 6, still at the rank of Capitaine. We also see that he was awarded an 1813 Iron Cross 2nd Class! As I said, it is a handy little research agent. It is one of the earliest ranglisten that we have been able to offer, and it is surprisingly good condition. You will want to exercise caution when handling it, but the pages are not brittle. [SALES ON ALL RANGLISTEN ARE FINAL. This is the 1849 Rang und Quartier-Liste for the Prussian Army and Navy. During that period, the Prussian navy was quite small. Every unit in the Prussian Army is listed, as well as the officers assigned to each regiment/unit. As you flip through the pages, you will see that certain officers have been crossed out. This leads me to believe that (at a later date) some army official was crossing off officers who no longer belonged to the given unit. Every unit in the Prussian Army is listed, as well as the officers assigned to each regiment/unit. As you flip through the pages, you will see where certain officers have been crossed out. This leads me to believe that some army official was crossing off officers who were no longer assigned to a given unit at a later date. Its front and back covers are missing. Aside from that, the book is in very good condition. It is 100% useable. [SALES ON ALL RANGLISTEN ARE FINAL. We do NOT send them out on approval, or for someone to do research and then return them. PRUSSIA – RANGLISTE – 1864 – RANG und QUARTIER=LISTE

    SKU: 12-691

    $125.00

This is a rangliste from 1864. It is a helpful book, not only for the year 1864 (in which the 1864 Danish-Prussian War occurred), but for the late 1850’s and officers who served then. It also sets the stage for officers who may have served in the 1866 Austro-Prussian War and the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War. As is typical of this type of book, it lists all Prussian regiments and sub organizations. It has an index in the back where you can search for individual officers, then refers you to the officer’s specific entries. The book measures 4 ½” x 7 ½” x 1 ½.” It also lists officers for the very small 1864 Prussian Navy. While the book is more than one-hundred-forty-five years-old, it is in remarkable condition. PRUSSIA – RANGLISTE – 1867 RANG und QUARTIER-LISTE – ARMY AND NAVY

    SKU: 12-670

    $175.00

This is a Prussian Army and Navy Rang und Quartier-Liste for the year 1867. At the time the Prussian military was so small that Army and Navy officers could be included in the same book. (Major changes occurred once WW I began)! Even then it is not a large book, measuring only 7 3/4″ x 5″ x 1 1/2″ and weighs 1 pound 5 ounces. Regardless of the time period, Ranglistes were intended to enumerate officers and the units in which they served. This is a significant Rangliste, as it reflects the Hanoverian regiments Prussia acquired as a result of the 1866 Austro-Prussian War. Prussia annexed Hannover, along with Braunschweig and Nassau, and their regiments became Prussian ones. In addition, any officers who served in the 1864 Danish-Prussian War most likely would appear in this particular volume. It means the volume serves as a helpful reference for the two final pieces in Germany’s consolidation jigsaw puzzle, which saw Prussia and König (later Kaiser) Wilhelm I become dominant. The Prussian Navy, which was quite small at the time (prior to Wilhelm II’s enthusiastic build-up), is also listed in the volume. Each officer who received decorations has them listed next to his name. In the book’s front is a pictorial listing of the various types and classes of decorations. We see Red and Black Eagles, Hohenzollern House Orders, Crown Orders, Orden Pour le Mérites, and even the 1813 Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd Class! (The Iron Cross was NOT awarded for the…

    PRUSSIA – RANGLISTE – 1874

    SKU: 12-667

    $250.00

This is another amazing Rangliste. It is for the Prussian Army during the year 1874. It will be particularly helpful to collectors and researchers with an interest in the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War. Many of the officers who served during that conflict have remained in service. While the book is dated 1874, it actually contains army officers from 1873, and perhaps early 1874. The book measures 8 1/4″ x 5 x 2 31/2.” It is more consistent (in terms of size) with ranglistes produced from 1895 through 1913. Another fascinating fact is that it once belonged to the German War Ministry. It also displays a book control tag on the inside cover that indicates it once belonged to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The book contains the standard regimental listing by officer’s rank of each man assigned to that regiment. It excludes regiments from Braunschweig, Saxony, Bavaria, and Württemberg. It also lists the officers, including commanders, from each Brigade, Division, and ArmeeKorps. Its binding has been repaired. It is an amazing artifact that is more than one-hundred-thirty years-old! PRUSSIA – RANGLISTE – 1885 – ARMY RANG und QUARTIER-LISTE

    SKU: 12-671

    $125.00

This is the Prussian Army’s Rang und Quartier-Liste for the year 1885. This volume is what evolved into the better-known “Rangliste.” Whatever the name, it was the annual volume listing all Prussian Army officers. An index in the back of the volume allows one to locate a particular officer and the regiment to which he was assigned. Also listed are any decorations that the officer received. The book did NOT include regiments from Württemberg, Saxony, Bavaria, and Braunschweig. It also only extended to Infanterie-Regiment Nr 132, as it predates the 1890’s major military expansion. Performing a bit of quick research, on page 23 we find a young hauptmann serving on Berlin’s General Staff. His name is Mackensen. (He had not yet been knighted by his Kaiser). Naturally, our young man is the future Generalfeldmarschall August von Mackensen. The listing shows that he was awarded the 1870 Iron Cross 2nd Class (while serving with 2. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 2) and his assignment with the General Staff had him working within the XVII. ArmeeKorps. The book measures 8 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ x 2″ and weighs 2 pound 4 ounces. It has red binding, with a gold-embossed Hohenzollern Eagle gracing the front cover and an 1870 Iron Cross on the back. While complete, the binding is a bit loose. [SALES ON ALL RANGLISTEN ARE FINAL. This is the Prussian Army’s 1895 Rangliste. Also listed within the book are the regiments and other units from Württemberg, Baden, Hesse-Darmstadt, Braunschweig, and Anhalt. Units from Saxony and Bavaria do not appear in a Prussian Rangliste because those two kingdoms published their own. The volume measures 7 1/2″ x 5″ x 1,” and weighs 3 pounds and 3 ounces. In addition to the actual field units (from the ArmeeKorps down), it contains a listing of officers who served on the General Staff and at the War Ministry. Some of the leather binding is tattered at the bottom, but the book’s overall condition and its binding’s integrity is excellent. [SALES ON ALL RANGLISTEN ARE FINAL. SKU: 12-785

    $150.00

Here we have the Prussian Army’s 1898 Rang-Und Quartier-Liste. This is a more complete listing than a pure Rangliste. It is a larger book physically than a Rangliste. Regiments and other units from Württemberg, Baden, Hesse-Darmstadt, Braunschweig, and Anhalt are also listed within the book. [No Saxon or Bavarian units appear in a Prussian Rangliste because each kingdom published its own]. The volume measures 2 ½” x 5 ½” x 8 5/16,” and weighs 3 pounds, 6 ounces. In addition to actual field units (from the Armeekorps down), it contains a listing of officers who served on the General Staff and at the War Ministry. An interesting feature of Ranglisten is their display of officers’ awarded orders and decorations. For example, one can find several senior officers who were awarded the 1870 Iron Cross. Officers who received the Red Eagle Order, the Crown Order, and so on also appear. The book is in excellent condition with a tight, firm binding. The pages’ print quality is excellent, revealing crisp pages that are little changed after more than one-hundred-years of existence. The title page features an unidentified officer’s bold signature. [I do not know if he did this to show it was his personal property, or if the book was a gift to a fellow officer]. [SALES ON ALL RANGLISTEN ARE FINAL. This is a set of three telegrams that were sent on Kaiser Wilhelm II’s behalf to artist Fritz Kraus. Kraus was a noted sculptor in Germany during the Imperial Period. The telegrams are dated 1904 and 1905. In them the Kaiser requests that Kraus prepare busts for the Naval Academy at Kiel. [The Academy has a superlative collection of German naval artifacts unlike any other in the world. I was very fortunate to visit it within the last few years, since it is difficult to gain admission. If you are ever offered the chance to visit it–GO!] Each of the telegrams measures 8″ x 9 3/4.” They carry the full markings, stampings, and tax stamps from the German post office that was responsible for maintaining the telegraph system. Two of the three were sent by the Kaiser’s Adjutant General. They are quite interesting. They also show how important, “Rush” messages were sent in Imperial Germany.

    SKU: 12-666

    $200.00

This is a very early Kingdom of Saxony Rangliste that dates from 1817! It is very likely that many of the officers listed here served during the Napoleonic Wars then remained in the Saxon Army. Compared to later Ranglistes (in which Saxon troops were included with most of the empire’s other units), this is a relatively small book. It measures 7″ x 4 1/4″ x 3/4.” It is in amazing condition for a book that is ONE-HUNDRED-NINETY-PLUS years-old. The binding is solid, but not complete. Obviously, care must be exercised when handling such an old book. Its content is amazing. It shows every officer, his unit, and, in most cases, when he received his patent for his listed rank. It is an interesting and useful book if you are doing research on the Saxon military or specific period officers. [SALES ON ALL RANGLISTEN ARE FINAL. This is the tour book from the National Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. This museum houses a fine collection of historically significant aircraft from the beginning of aviation early in the 20th Century up until modern days. My personal favorite is the “Spirit of St. Louis,” which marked the first solo flight across the Atlantic. Many fine airplanes are featured in this tour book. You don’t have to be a WW I enthusiast to enjoy it.

BOOK – BLUE-EYED CHILD OF FORTUNE: THE CIVIL WAR LETTERS OF COLONEL ROBERT GOULD SHAW EDITED BY RUSSELL DUNCAN. This is American Civil War Colonel Robert Gould Shaw’s (1837-1863) interesting story. Shaw’s life and death were immortalized in the hit 1989 movie Glory, which starred Matthew Broderick as Shaw. Robert Gould Shaw was born to one of the wealthiest families in Massachusetts and grew up in Boston and New York. He traveled extensively abroad and spent two years at Harvard. He and his family were staunch abolitionists. When the Civil War broke out in 1861 he enlisted in a regiment from New York as a private, then later served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry. While with that regiment, he participated in battles at Winchester, Cedar Mountain, and Antietam. Later, when Massachusetts raised the first all-black infantry regiment, the 54th Massachusetts, his father urged him to take its command and Shaw did so. After its training was complete, the regiment was sent to South Carolina. On 18 July 1863 his regiment, along with two brigades of white troops, assaulted the Confederate positions at Battery Wagner. Shaw was mortally wounded at the head of his troops. The attack ultimately failed and Battery Wagner was never captured. The 54th Massachusetts suffered more than 50% casualties. As an insult, the Confederates buried Shaw in a mass grave with his soldiers. His family back North instead considered it an honor that also honored them. Robert Gould Shaw was twenty-five at the…

This is a soft cover book that was written in 1998. The Medal of Honor or Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest decoration given by the U.S. to its soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. Like the Victoria Cross, and unlike the Pour le Mérite, it was awarded regardless of rank. It could be awarded to privates and generals alike. It was awarded for a specific act of bravery. It was established in 1861 and was awarded during the War Between the States (Civil War), and is still awarded to this day. The book concentrates on the aviators of WW I. It concentrates on eight men who received it during the brief time that the U.S. participated in WW I. Perhaps the best-known of the awardees are Frank Luke and Eddie Rickenbacker. The book is liberally illustrated with many fine photographs.

Here is a Special Blast From the Past! Mickey Mouse is a worldwide icon and the “face” of the Walt Disney Company, Inc. International sensation Mickey first emerged in 1928’s famous cartoon “Steamboat Willie.” He went on to appear in a cartoon strip series and has appeared in countless cartoons and movies. During the 1930’s, Whitman (a division of the Western Publishing Company) developed an inexpensive paperback book series for children, the Big Little Books® (BLB’s). The Walt Disney Studio was the first company to license their comic characters with Whitman for inclusion in the BLB’s. In 1935, the book series included this thrilling tale about Mickey Mouse and his adventure sailing to Treasure Island. The vintage book has Mickey walking the plank and being grabbed by a gorilla. Kee
