 Historical Ranglistes on CD!

We now are offering you one of the most useful research items you will ever find. Army and Navy Ranglistes have long been sought-out by collectors and researchers, They are an incredible aid in identifying officers who served during the Imperial Period. Ranglistes were issued on a yearly basis. During the prewar period, they showed each of the old-line regiments, whether the units were infantry, cavalry, artillery, pioneer, etc. The books identified EACH of the regimental officers, along with any decorations he had been awarded. Each regiment’s listing displayed even more information. The listing indicated the complete, official name and designation of the regiment, the appointed Regimental Chef (if any), the regimental commander, the Armeekorps to which it was assigned etc. Several issues were printed on a yearly basis. One was done for Prussia & Württemberg, one for Saxony, one for Bavaria, etc.

In my working library I maintain copies of the 1904 (Prussia), 1914 (Prussia), and the 1914-1918 Army Ranglistes, along with a copy of the 1914-1918 Navy Rangliste. Once the Great War broke out, the Army issued no more annual Ranglistes, per se. They did print less-detailed, annual, "officers’ listings." It was far too difficult to maintain a regular Rangliste with so many officers being killed, wounded, and added as the war progressed. Finally, in 1925, another Rangliste was prepared to update the old-line regiments for the period of 1914-1918. This was known as "The Honor Rangliste." The latter is extremely useful for doing research about officers from WW I. In my opinion, it is indispensable.

We must not ignore the Navy Rangliste. Although the Navy was far smaller than the Army, it DID produce annual Ranglistes both before and during WW I. Like the Army, the Navy published an Honor Rangliste after WW I, similar to the Army version. All Ranglistes (even the annual volumes) are quite expensive, if one can find them. An annual volume in good condition can run from $150.00 and up. Finding them in good condition is quite a challenge! The 1914-1918 Army Rangliste can run $250.00+, and they are getting harder to find all the time.

Yes, I have an original 1914-1918 Army Honor Rangliste in my library, but in the last year I have switched to a modern-day edition to preserve my original! [The modern-day version comes in two smaller volumes compared to the original’s large, single-volume, edition]. The Navy 1914-1918 Rangliste is even more expensive. I have heard of them changing hands for $800.00 to $1,000.00! I am a bit embarrassed to say what I paid for my copy, but I just HAD to have one. They just do not come around that often.

As useful as these books are, a problem remains. They are bulky, and at 90+ years-old, they are quite fragile. Inevitably, one must deal with the issues of broken spines, torn pages, etc. Fortunately, we can offer a solution that addresses all of these concerns. A longtime collector has reduced several of the Army and Navy Ranglistes to CD! This has been a time-consuming process. I do not exaggerate when I say that he has packed THOUSANDS of dollars’ worth of material onto a single CD. Below you will find the listing of which Ranglistes are represented on the CD. To recreate the information presented here, you would need many books and a lot of shelf space. [ I have the library to prove it]! This is the true value of this CD.

Now, with a quick check on your computer, you can find many interesting facts and historical tidbits. I certainly have retired MY Ranglistes to my rare, historical book collection. They are no longer a part of my working library. This is just the sensible way to do it.

At HALF of what a single volume would cost you (if you were lucky), you can have all of this information at your fingertips (well, your mouse-tip[?])! The price for this splendid CD is $75.00 plus shipping. Order one today. I promise you that you will use this constantly! Some information is included that will even help you read German script with greater ease.

Special Notice: There are NO refunds offered on these historical CD's. If they do not perform properly we will gladly replace them as needed.

All sales are FINAL so please keep this in mind when you order one.

35-04 Historical Ranglistes on CD: 1908/09 Deutscher Ordens Almanach.  The German Orders Almanac was not published by the government. It was privately-printed. It provides the single largest, listing of civilian and military award holders in Imperial Germany. Each recipient chose what to include-- from a bare listing of the often inconsequential awards they had received to first names and full birth data, along with current positions and complete home addresses. Nothing else like it exists for the mass of German civilian and military award recipients. Even military award holders often reveal fuller personal details than are found in official Rank Lists. It is an unparalleled research resource into the lives represented in medal groups, from reigning monarchs to pensioned schoolteachers. The data each listed person provided on him or herself gave clues where to search for further career or award information. The German Orders Almanac is the foundation for any pre-World War biographical research on award recipients.

Because the Orders Almanac was privately printed, it did not follow the "usual" abbreviations and common emblems representing German awards found in military Ranglistes and state handbooks. The CD’s provider gives hints as how to best use the "keys" to the Almanac's unique "system" in the instructions provided with the media.

NOW AVAILABLE: BRAND-NEW SOFT-COVER REPRINT!

35-07 1924 Rangliste des Deutschen Reichsheeres (1924 Germany Army Rank List) 249 Pages, soft-cover, REPRINT.
This is an exact reprint of the original 1924 Germany Army Rangliste. The 1924 Rangliste is one of the earliest and most complete post-WWI Ranglistes. It lists Germany Army officers by rank and within their regiments. It also has a seniority list of officers, by rank, listing their awards and decorations from WWI and before. A name index is included.

An officer can be looked up in the name index, or directly through his regiment. Erwin Rommel is listed in the name index, while his regiment appears on page 40. Turn to page 40, and you will see Rommel listed as a Hauptmann with Württemberg’s 13th Infantry Regiment. To his name’s right is his date of rank, 18.10.18, and (34). The number 34 is his placement within the officers promoted on 18.10.18. Turn next to the Rangliste’s seniority section on page 157. Listed under "Hauptleute und Rittmeister" and the promotion date 18.10.18, we find Rommel at the promotion order of 34. You also will see that all his awards and decorations are listed, including his PLM.

The value of having and using the 1924 Rangliste is that you can research any German Army officer who stayed in the Army from 1919 until 1933, at which time the Army Ranglistes were no longer published. Many of the officers listed in the Rangliste went on to much higher ranks and distinguished careers from 1939 through 1945. The Ranglistes can be used to track their careers and, more importantly, verify their awards and decorations. The Ranglistes are also used to attribute medal bars and ribbon bars to specific officers.

35-08 Die Kriegsmarine 1939-1945 Volume III by H.H. Hildebrand and W. Lohmann. This is part of a three-volume series of books written in the 1950's by H.H. Hildebrand and W. Lohmann. Volume III details more than 4000 Kriegsmarine officers and their wartime career assignments on 820 pages. It also has more than 250 portraits of Kriegsmarine officers, many of whom were admirals and U-Boot officers. It is the only source for Kriegsmarine officers’ wartime assignments. The publisher, PGCJ Publications, has secured written approval from H.H. Hildebrand to reprint Volume III in heavy-duty paperback.
If you collect Kriegsmarine documents, uniforms or almost any other identified Kriegsmarine item, you need to insure that the name lines up with the item. For example, if you have a document signed by the Bismarck’s Captain, you need to make sure that your person actually was on the Bismarck! This book will help you do the research. If you have a uniform with a name in it, you can reference the name in the book and determine the officer’s assignments. The book is an invaluable source for Kriegsmarine collectors.
