Framed Photographs

40-45 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - DELUXE PATRIOTIC FRAME. This is an amazing photograph in a high-quality patriotic frame. The frame measures 5 1/8" x 3 1/8." The image within the frame measures 3 1/4" x2 1/4." The photograph shows a man who appears to be in his 40's. He is wearing an Iron Cross boutonniere in his buttonhole. Now what is especially interesting is that it appears that oak leaves are directly above the Iron Cross. If this is correct, then this would be for an 1870 Iron Cross 2nd Class with the Twenty-Five Year Oak Leaves. I do not necessarily think the photograph was taken during the war years. The frame is beautifully manufactured. It is elaborately made. At the very top is a 1914 Iron Cross surrounded by oak leaves. A swing away easel is attached to the frame’s back, which allows display of both photo and frame. A manufacturer’s hallmarking appears on the frame’s lower edge. $250.00

20-230 TWO SMALL PLAQUES ON EASELS - KAISER WILHELM II AND KAISERIN AUGUSTA VIKTORIA. This is a fine pair of small plaques that measure 2" x 1 1/2." They represent Kaiser Wilhelm II and his wife, Kaiserin Augusta Viktoria. Each plaque displays the motto "Gott Mit Uns" at the top. The royal couple’s images are in high-relief. Their birth dates are listed to the right or left of their heads. Below the Kaiserin we read "Auguste Viktoria Kaiserin und Königin." Wilhelm’s plaque displays the legend "Kaiser Wilhelm II." Both are decorative and well-made. The two plaques are mounted on easels measuring 3 1/2" x 2." When placed on a table, the Kaiser should be on the right and the Kaiserin on the left, so they can look across at one another. They are quite touching. $375.00

38-63 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - PRINCESS CECILIE AND HER DAUGHTER. Princess Cecilie was one of the most popular of the royals in Germany. She was a princess from Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and was later married to Wilhelm, Kronprinz of Germany, the oldest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II. She was very involved in relief efforts in Germany, both before and during WW I. She was an attractive woman. The people of Germany took her to their hearts, as she was very good with people and quite photogenic.  This period-framed piece shows her with her baby, the Princess Alexandrine. The frame is gilt and measures 12 1/2" x 9 1/2." The photograph measures 6" x 6 1/4." A dedication in pencil is on the photograph, advising the cause that the proceeds of the photograph would benefit. It is in wonderful condition, and ready to hang on your wall. $195.00

40-256 FRAMED COLOR LIKENESS - PRINZ REGENT LUITPOLD - BAVARIA. This is a WW I era frame that measures 1 1/2" x 3 1/4." The image area measures 5 1/4" x 3 1/4." At the bottom is an area that measures 7 1/2" x 4 1/4," with a 1914 Iron Cross. In the area for the image is a color likeness of Prinz Regent Luitpold of Bavaria. He led Bavaria from 1886 (and König Ludwig II’s death) until his own death in 1911. On the reverse is a foldaway easel. $95.00

The photograph is handsomely framed in an ornate gilt frame, which measures 24 1/2” x 20 1/2.” Some chipping affects the frame at the top and bottom. This is quite reasonably priced. It will look like a million dollars on your wall! Extra shipping will be required on this item. $225.00

40-182 FRAMED CdV - GARDE-REGIMENT - PRUSSIA. This is a most unusual photo frame housing a Carte de Viste from a Garde-Regiment. The man is dressed in his uniform, with an overcoat over his shoulders. He is wearing a pickelhaube with a black parade bush. The Garde Star is clearly visible on his wappen. The photograph was taken at a Berlin studio. The frame is quite intriguing. It is made from a combination of four empty shell casings and six complete (deactivated[!]) bullets. At the frame’s top of is a kriegsflagge crossed with another flag. An easel that permits the frame to stand on its own is attached to the frame’s back. The frame and CdV make a very fine set. $175.00

Spee and his two sons died in the action. The photograph (in the frame) measures 11 1/2" x 8 1/2." The period frame measures 9" x 6." $50.00

40-290 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - SAILORS - KOMMANDO IN ADMIRALSTAB - BERLIN 1907. This is a large, period-framed photograph of sailors who served with the Kommando in Admiralstab (Admirals’ Staff Command) in Berlin, 1907. A total of twenty-one men is in the photograph, which uses a large kriegsflagge for background. The photograph’s matted area features information on their assignment and year at the top. EACH man is identified at the bottom. The photograph measures 8 1/2" x 11." A problem exists with the large-format photograph. You will note a large number of what appears to be black dots. Something also has begun with the developing process. Some of the faces are distorted and difficult to decipher. The photograph and matte are in a period frame, measuring 19" x 21 1/2." It is made of wood with a brass inner section and a gilded inner trim. Glass covers the photograph. It is an amazing piece of history that is more than one-hundred-years-old. It is bargain-priced. [Shipping will be more costly due to its size and depending on its delivery destination]. $110.00

While the frame is complete, it does have chunks missing from the molding. The interior photo measures 12 3/4" x 17." It shows the boat docked with at least three other torpedoboots, while a couple of other boats are moving around the harbor. The photo is double-matted. The name of the ship is clearly identified on the outer matte. $125.00

40-203 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - HIGH SEAS FLEET - KIEL. This is a wonderful, wide-angle, framed photo which shows the German High Seas Fleet (Die deutsche Hochseeflotte) at anchor in Kiel. At least twenty different vessels are in the scene. They range from battleships to smaller ships. Several of the ships are building steam in their boilers and may be readying to sail. The photo was taken with a wide angle lens in order to get this many ships in the photo. It measures 27 1/2” x 11 3/4.” Its brown, period, wooden frame measures 5 3/4” x 22.” Two hooks are at the top with which to hang it. It is a great photo. $150.00

40-204 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - MATROSEN DIVISION SAILORS - CHINA. This is a wonderful framed photograph that shows a group of enlisted sailors (thirteen men) standing and kneeling with rifles. They are part of a Matrosen-Division. Two petty officers are also among the group on the back row. The photo is dated 1910, and was taken at Wilhelmshaven. On the reverse, August Kläfkr, one of the men’s names, is penciled in. He was born in 1887 and assigned to 1. Kompagnie II. Matrosen-Division (though not at birth[!]). He also noted that from 1910-1912 he served in East Asia (Ostasien) aboard the S. M. Torpedoboot S90. The photo measures 6 1/2” x 9.” The period brown frame measures 11” x 14 1/2.” A very good chance exists that he served during WW I. $125.00

40-207 FRAMED REICHSMARINE PHOTOGRAPH.
This is an interesting photograph, which dates from the 1920's. It shows a group of twenty-eight officers on what I believe is a Cruiser. The first row shows the ship’s senior officers, many of whom are wearing the 1914 Iron Cross 1st or 2nd Class. I also see an Iron Cross 1st Class equivalent from Oldenburg and Mecklenburg-Schwerin on a tunic or two. The ship’s commander is readily visible in the middle of the front row. He is wearing the uniform of a Kapitän zur See, complete with an old-fashioned, winged-collar shirt. As a matter of fact, as I look more closely at the EK 2 ribbon in his buttonhole, I believe I see the crown and crossed swords of the Knights Cross with Swords of the Hohenzollern House Order! The photo, which measures 5” x 7 1/4,” is housed in a period brown wooden frame measuring 6 1/2” x 9.” This is a real research project for the right collector. $40.00

16-192 FRAMED STUDIO PORTRAIT - NCO - AVIATION UNIT. This is a framed studio photograph of a young NCO attached to an aviation unit. He is holding a sword with portopee, and his visor cap. His shoulder straps clearly identify him for being in an aviation unit. The brown wood, period-framed presentation measures 12" x 9." A fastener is on the back of the frame, so this is ready to hang and enjoy. The young soldier’s photo measures 6" x 3," within the frame. The photographer’s name, address, and even his telephone number are noted on the matting. The photographer was located in Köln (Cologne). $110.00

16-136 FRAMED COLOR ILLUSTRATION OF AND POEM TO OSWALD BOELCKE. This is a touching memorial poem to the "Father" of German aviation tactics, Oswald Boelcke. Boelcke was an amazing aviator who, at the time of his death in October 1916, had forty confirmed victories to his credit, and more than triple the kills of his closest pursuer. With the victories he had to his credit, and with the better quality planes that were starting to reach service, had he not perished in the collision, HOW many victories could he have claimed? Think of "Bloody April" in 1917, where many of the pilots in Jasta 11 shot down 15 to 25 planes in a single month! This framed presentation is in a modern frame, which measures 14 1/4" x 11 1/4," with a light, wooden molding. Framed within is a colorized picture of Boelcke in his helmet, with his goggles on his forehead. Below is a very popular memorial poem. The page, which appears to have been removed from a book (I see what I believe is a page number), measures 11 ½" x 8 ½." $40.00 .

40-50 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN INFANTERIE-REGIMENT. This is a framed photograph showing a young soldier from a Mecklenburg-Schwerin infantry regiment. He was assigned to either Grossherzogl Mecklenburgisches Grenadier-Regiment Nr 89, or Grossherzogl Mecklenburgisches Fùsilier-Regiment Nr 90. We can tell this from his belt buckle. He is wearing a pickelhaube with a canvas cover, so we cannot see his wappen to make an identification from it. He is also wearing a bayonet at his side. I n the upper left corner, stretched diagonally, is the ribbon for the 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class. Stretched diagonally from the upper right corner is the ribbon for the Hanseatic Cross from Hamburg. This leads us to believe that the man pictured won both of these awards. The black wooden frame, trimmed in gold, measures 10 1/4" x 6." The photograph within the frame measures 9" x 4 1/2." A hook is on the reverse. The photograph is ready to hang on your wall or be displayed on a bookcase. $65.00

40-10 PERIOD FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - LEHR-INFANTRIE-BATTALION - POTSDAM. This is a wonderful photograph of the Lehr-Infantrie-Battalion on parade. The Lehr-Infantrie-Battalion was created in 1820 during the reign of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. It was a special training unit which while a complete and separate battalion was attached to 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß in 1895. So as a matter of course, 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß had four battalions instead of the more typical three of an infantry regiment. Thus the Lehr-Battalion was actually garrisoned in Potsdam and would have been assigned to the GardeKorps.  It was used for special training and tactics which might then be used in the German army and to ensure conformity to the drilling and training throughout the German army. It was quite elite and was often seen at functions that included the Kaiser. It was a great honor to be assigned to the battalion. Here, it is seen at the Neuen Palis (built during the reign of King Frederick the Great)  of Kaiser Wilhelm II in Potsdam. The framed photograph measures 15 1/2" x 18 1/2," while the photograph contained therein measures 8 1/2" x 11 1/2." The photo was taken by a house photographer. The firm was appointed by Imperial decree to take official photographs of the Kaiser and his family. The arrangement would have been similar to the court or house jewelers such as Godet & Sohn, Wagner & Sohn, etc. The large photo was taken 5 June 1911. Both the photograph and the frame are very high quality. I suspect that this hung in the home of one of the battalion members with great pride. Buy this photograph and the photograph below and receive a 10% discount on the pair! Special handling and shipping will be required on this piece due to its size.] $125.00

40-12 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH - NCO HUSSAR (IN A FELDGRAU UNIFORM)  AND FAMILY. This is a simple, period-framed photograph of a Senior NCO Hussar and his family. The man is also a musician. He can be seen wearing a feldgrau attila to which a musician’s swallows nests are attached. While I cannot be certain, I believe this man was a member of Husaren-Regiment Fürst Blücher von Wahlstatt (Pommersches) Nr 5. The regiment was initially formed in 1758. It was garrisoned at Stolp, where it was attached to the XVII. ArmeeKorps. The regiment was named in honor of the great Prussian hero of Waterloo who Generalfeldmarschall von Blücher, along with the Duke of Wellington, delivered the knockout blow to Napoleon, ending his dreams of European domination once and for all. Without the arrival of the Prussian Army at Waterloo, Wellington was on the verge of defeat. The arrival of fresh and well-led Prussian troops changed the course of history. The photograph of this man shows him wearing an NCO’s visor cap, a holster with pistol, and a sword. His wife is seated and his young son is dressed in the overcoat and visor cap of a Hussar, just like his papa. This is typical of the "Kinder" tradition of young sons dressing like their fathers. Uniforms, headdress, swords, etc. were all a part of this tradition. The massive, framed presentation measures 15" x 11." The matted photograph in the frame measures 26 1/2" x 22 1/2." This is a poignant presentation of a young family either just before the war began or perhaps even shortly after it started. [Special handling and shipping will be required on this piece due to its size.] $250.00

38-01 FRAMED COLOR LITHOGRAPH - GENERALFELDMARSCHALL PAUL von HINDENBURG. This is a period-framed color lithograph of Generalfeldmarschall Paul von Hindenburg. It is in the style that was displayed in government offices while he was President of the Weimar Republic. He is depicted in a late-war pose. Hindenburg is wearing all of his medals and decorations, including the Pour le Mérite with Oak Leaves, the1914 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross, etc. In one hand he grips his interim generalfeldmarschall’s baton, while the other holds a sword with a Garde Star on the grip. The piece is attractively done, and ready to hang on your wall. $375.00

12-428 FRAMED SOLDIER’S FAMILY PHOTO. This is a postcard-sized original photograph of a family or families of females and soldiers. It is enclosed in a patriotic frame embroidered in Germany’s national colors of red, black and white. The frame measures 4 ½" x 6 ½." Three young women and one older woman, who may be the mother of the four soldiers, are in the photo. One of the younger women has a small girl sitting on her lap. The photo is dated 1916. Seated in the center is an NCO, who appears to be the eldest. He is wearing a 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class in his buttonhole and a large ribbon bar on his tunic. He is also holding TWO canes, so he was severely wounded. This is an interesting study of a family pausing in the midst of war. $60.00

12-385 MINIATURE FRAMED MOURNING PHOTO OF A SOLDIER. Here we have a small black frame measuring 3 1/8" x 2 5/8." Frames like this were used as mourning pieces to house the photos of soldiers who died in their country’s service. A small silver Iron Cross is embossed on the bottom of the frame. Inside the frame is a photo of a young NCO. A piece of the glass is missing in the frame’s upper left corner. As always, such pieces are heartbreakingly touching. $55.00

10-386 FRAMED STUDIO POSE OF A PRE WAR GERMAN SOLDIER. A very nice pre-WW I studio photo of a young soldier dressed in uniform with sword and portopee. Seated beside him is an older man who could well be his father. The studio background is complete with castle! Has a period frame complete with hanger ready to go up on your wall. $75.00

12-255 FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH OF A YOUNG GIRL. A most interesting framed photograph of a young girl (I would estimate her to be 8-12 years old.). I rather get the impression that she has just attended her 1st Communion as she is wearing a long white dress and is wearing a crucifix and appears to be holding a pocket bible. The frame has a bark finish to it and has a 1914 Iron Cross at the bottom. The frame measures about 3" x 5 ½". The photo appears to be from about 1914-1930 but the frame is actually post WW II as it is marked :Made in W. Germany." Very touching as it is or another photo could be substituted if you prefer. $45.00

Photo Albums

40-350 ALBUMS - PHOTOGRAPHS - POSTCARDS. I found these albums years ago on a buying trip to Germany. They are modern-day productions, but very similar in style to albums used during the Imperial German Period. I only have a few of them left. I wanted to share them with you as they are wonderful for housing postcards and/or photographs. The albums measure 6 1/2" x 8 1/4," and are gray-green with a textured finish. Yes, in some ways they are reminiscent of feldgrau. Each boasts twelve double-sided pages. If you are looking for an inexpensive way to house your postcards and photos, these certainly fit the bill. SPECIAL OFFER: if you buy more than $200.00 of combined postcards and/or photographs, we will throw one of these in for free. This is in addition to receiving the other discounts we are offering for larger orders. Just let us know that you want one! Other wise: $10.00 each

Imperial German Air Service

14-202 PHOTO ALBUM WHICH HAS PHOTOS OF POINTS OF INTEREST IN GERMANY AND SOME AVIATION RELATED PHOTOS. This is a very nice small format album which has thirty-eight photos from the period of November-December 1917. The album begins with several shots of interesting points within Germany. Most of these shots are very neatly captioned in white ink. As the album develops, we begin to see photos of planes and aviation personnel. We see photos of the planes at the airfields, in flight, and even crashed planes. Several of the pages of the album are blank. A very nice starter album with enough aviation material and personality shots to keep you interested. $395.00

38-454 POSTCARD AVIATION ALBUM - FRANCE. This is a most interesting album which is a self-contained, French postcard album, showing the air war from the French perspective. A total of nineteen postcards is in the album. They can be detached, if so desired. Each of the postcards shows various aspects of either the French Air Service or troops on the ground dealing with German planes. This is an attractively executed set. Each postcard features a built-in piece of tissue to protect the cards from wear. $250.00

Army

38-342 TWO-PHOTO ALBUM SET - HUSAREN-REGIMENT. This is an amazing two-photo album set for a man who served in a Husaren-Regiment. While it has photos of many officers and men from a variety of Husaren-Regiments, the fellow who compiled these two first-rate photo albums was a member of Husaren-Regiment Königin Wilhelmina der Niederlande (Hannoversches) Nr. 15. Although nominally a Prussian regiment, it originally had been Hanoverian. It was assimilated into the Prussian Army as an outcome of the 1866 war between Prussia and Saxony. It was a very elite regiment. They wore bandeaux on their busbies for their battle honors achieved at (left to right) Peninsula, Waterloo, El Bodon, and Barossa. The regiment was founded in 1803. It was garrisoned at Wandsbek, where it was assigned to the IX. Armeekorps. The two photo albums cover a period in this man’s life from 1897 to 1959! The first volume contains 108 photos. Many photos are of the officers and men from several different Husaren-Regiments. Many of the officers are identified in the photos, however, they are not identified by regiment. One could spend time identifying these regiments and officers by using 1897-1905 Ranglistes. One could also spend time identifying the men’s uniforms. Many photos show the men in their daily lives, i.e., in the stables, working with their horses. This is great stuff! Photos of parades and other activities are included. This is all pre WW I material. It does NOT show Husaren troops during the Great War. This photo includes several photos from the 1935-1940 period. One can see the influence of the Third Reich, and the tradition of Husaren troops. It is all very interesting. The second volume has a total of 86 photos. They again comprise many different sizes. Several are large enough to take an entire page of their own. Three photos in particular stand out. The first is a photo of Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin, with a number of Husaren around him. The other two are large-format photographs, each measuring 5 1/2" x 8 3/4." They depict Kaiser Parades that were held during 1911 in Hamburg and in Altoona. In both of these photographs (professionally taken) large numbers of Husaren are seen on parade with the Kaiser, while many of his senior officers look on. Further on in the album are photos from the 1920's, as well as many photos from the 1930's Third Reich-era. Then come photos of veteran groups from 1955 through 1959, as their ranks dwindle. These are amazing photos. You will have hours to enjoy and savor them as you pick out more and more interesting details. $2,995.00

10-271 PHOTO ALBUM TO A MEMBER OF THE 1st KOMPAGNIE OF THE GARDE-SCHÜTZEN-BATTALION. This is a marvelous oversized album to a man ( who served in the Garde-Schützen Battalion from 1905-1907. The quality of pre WW I albums like these far exceed war time examples. The cover of the album which measures 14 ½" x 11 ½" is very decorative and ornate. It has a Royal Cypher, a colored regimental standard, and " I. Comp. 1905-1907. Inside the album on the title page is the name of the man, Heinrich Warch) and the basic information on his service. This album was professionally produced and a photograph of him. Inside the album are professional taken photographs of the Officers and Men of the Company. There are a total of twenty three high quality photos (these were not taken by an amateur photographer with a Brownie) within the album but most are of a larger format and are on a page of their own. These larger photos measure 6" x 8" and each are matted on the page to properly frame them. There are several photographs of the men in training and at ease together. The photographs of the Officers are particularly interesting as they represent tremendous uniform studies of what was worn in a Garde-Schützen organization. This unit was a very elite Battalion that was sponsored by the Hohenzollern household and it was a tremendous honor to serve in it. Included with the album is a document which has the unit rubber stamp on it. It is signed by a Hauptmann who was the Company Commander who states that Warch served well and faithfully since he entered the Company from 1905-1907. It further states that Warch was born in 1886. The binding is a bit loose on the album but with reasonable care the album will offer hours of pleasure. The images are in excellent condition (except for the one photo of Warch which could be in better condition. I don’t often buy photo albums but this one struck me for the quality and the uniqueness of the Company that it represented. $395.00

38-179 PHOTO ALBUM - TELEGRAPH-RADIO ABTEILUNG. This is a photo album for a man who served in a Radio-Telegraph Abteilung during the period of 1908-1909. A total of seventy photographs is in this album. Each of the photos has a written description under it. A fascinating array of photos is in the album. All of the images are original photos of varying sizes, with NO postcards. Individual and group photos of the men who served in the unit are included. One interesting photo appears to be a classroom with a very large radio in it. The photos of the men include enlisted men, NCO’s, and One-Year-Volunteers. Some Christmas photos appear from 1908. Even three photos of early zeppelins from the 1908-09 period show up. $350.00

40-289 PHOTO ALBUM - INFANTERIE-REGIMENT Nr 91 - OLDENBURG. This is a lovely photo album. Its measurements are 10 1/2" x 8" x 1." The front cover features an Iron Cross in a wreath and "Kriegs-Erinnerungen." Inside the album is a total of forty-eight original photographs and seventy-one postcards, for a grand total of one-hundred-nineteen items. These are my impressions about the album’s contents. First, based on photos and other information within, the album’s owner was from the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. He served in Infanterie-Regiment Nr 91. It was the ONLY regiment Oldenburg fielded. Furthermore, I believe the owner was a regimental band member, a lot of pictures show the band or men who were in the band. It is quite unusual to find something from a musician rather than just a regimental soldier. Usually, when a regiment had a band, only 2-to-4 percent of its men was involved with the band. No photos show the regiment in battle. It is more a personal, behind-the-scenes record of men in war. Most of what I see is early-war. I do not see any photos with stahlhelms. $225.00

Kaiserliche Marine

40-291 PHOTO ALBUM - SAILOR. Here is a photo album, measuring 9 1/4" x 12 1/2," that holds a total of seventy-two photographs. Fifty-five of them are related to naval activities. The remaining seventeen are, I believe, photographs of the taker’s family at home. All the naval photographs are in small-format (3 1/2" x 2 1/2"). The photos include daily onboard and shore activities. After looking at many of the photos, I believe the photographer belonged to a minesweeper flotilla. Some photos of Cruisers or Battleships are also included. Nothing especially exciting appears in the photos. Each one tells its own story, however. They are well worth studying with a magnifying glass. $250.00

40-196 COLOR CABINET PHOTOGRAPH - KAISER WILHELM II. This is a very striking large-format color cabinet photograph of Kaiser Wilhelm II. It measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/2." From his appearance in the photograph, it is fairly early in his reign. He is wearing a general of Hussars’ pelisse. If you look carefully, instead of shearling at his collar and down the tunic’s center you will see fur, perhaps ermine. On his tunic he is wearing a large medal bar, breast star, and a collar for Hohenzollern House Order. He is also wearing the Golden Adjutant’s Badge to the Kaiser, so it is entirely possible that the photograph was actually taken while he was the Kronprinz! It is a very high quality photograph that shows a lot of detail. $95.00

20-149 PHOTOGRAPH AND GLASS NEGATIVE - KAISER WILHELM II. This is an interesting original photograph and glass negative of Kaiser Wilhelm II. While I am not a photographic historian, I believe it was sometime around the turn of the 20th Century when glass negatives gave way to film negatives. (Now that we have digital cameras, negatives themselves are becoming rarer)! The photograph shows the Kaiser in the uniform of a German Army Generalfeldmarschall. He is standing on an estate’s lawn with two older women, and a younger woman accompanied by two very young girls dressed in their Sunday finest. I believe one of the older women is the Empress. While I cannot be certain, I have a hunch from the Kaiser’s age that this photograph may have been taken at Haus Doorn, his exiled home in the Netherlands. It is also possible that the photo was taken in the last year of the war in Germany.
The photo measures 1 3/4" x 6 1/2." The glass negative measures 1 3/4" x 6 1/2." The negative has a crack that runs the complete distance of the negative, from left to right. While cracked, it does hang together. It needs to be handled with great care.

40-372 XLL LARGE-FORMAT PHOTOGRAPH - OFFICERS - CREW - U-28. This is a consignment item from an advanced Navy enthusiast’s collection. The large-format photograph, measuring 8" x 11," features the officers and crew of the U-28. The U-Boot was commissioned in 1913. During the war, she totaled forty confirmed sinkings. She also damaged two ships, and took two others as prizes. She was sunk, with all hands, in September 1917. The U-28 had a total of four captains: Freiherr Georg-Günther von Forstner, Otto Rohrbeck, Freiherr Degenhart von Loë, and her final commander, Georg Schmidt, who died with all his crew members. In this marvelous photograph the U-28 is tied up at a pier. Shore personnel are looking on as the U-28's entire crew (including enlisted sailors, NCO’s, and officers) gather on her deck and conning tower. The sailors appear to have been recently awarded the 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class. All of the officers are wearing both the Iron Cross 1st and the 2nd Class. I am unable to determine when the photo was taken, or which of the four commanders appears in the shot. The very high-quality, professionally-taken photo is in fine condition. Research material is included with the photo. Its reverse shows that it has been removed from a photo album. $125.00

40-374 XLL ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - ARMED SAILORS - LUGERS. This is a consignment item from an advanced Navy enthusiast’s collection. It is an original photograph that shows thirteen sailors. It is a great shot, as the men display cartridge boxes and holstered Navy Lugers attached to their belts. Many men sport drawn Lugers, which clearly can be seen in their hands. The WW I Navy Luger had a six inch barrel that clearly distinguished it from its Army counterparts, which came in four and eight inch-lengths (the latter for the artillery). Some sailors blandish naval cutlasses. The reverse reveals that it was mailed as a Feldpostkarte from 1. Torpedo Division. $40.00

40-217 CdV - ENLISTED SAILOR - S. M. S. FRITHJOF AND WIFE. This CdV measures 2 1/2" x 4.” It shows an enlisted sailor who served aboard the S. M. S. Frithjof. The ship was a Küstenpanzerschiff (Coastal Armored Ship), commissioned in 1883. Her duties were to cruise the coast and protect Germany. She was never intended as a deep water, long-distance ship. She served until 1903 and was retired. She was called back to service, however, in 1914. She was again used for coastal defense from 1914-1916 and as a floating barracks for the rest of the war. The CdV shows a sailor from the vessel and his wife. He is in his dress tunic (monkey suit). 38-187 ORIGINAL GROUP PHOTOGRAPH - 30+ MEN ATTACHED TO NAVAL ARTILLERY. This is just a wonderful group photograph of about 30 men (and one dog). Those of you who enjoy looking for details in photographs will really like this one. Start with the sailors who are pairing their jumpers and mutzes with feldgrau trousers! Have a look at the front row, and you will see five officers and one NCO. You will see a collection of feldgrau uniforms and visor caps. The visor caps have Navy Officers’ badges and are feldgrau. That is rare stuff. It is both difficult and expensive to find one of those today. On the photo’s reverse is a unit stamp for the 3rd Navy Artillery-Regiment. $45.00

40-253 CABINET PHOTOGRAPH - ENLISTED SAILOR - S. M. S. KAISER. This is a cabinet photograph that measures 6 1/2" x 4." As I have shared with you before, photographs can often tell us an interesting story about the people photographed. This cabinet photograph is one of those photos. It tells us a VERY interesting story. At first viewing, we see an enlisted sailor in his dress uniform, featuring his "monkey jacket." In his lap we can see a mutze from the S. M. S. Kaiser. As we look at his left arm, we see several patches. At the bottom are service patches. The upper one of the two tells us he was a One-Year-Volunteer. Above that patch is one for a signalman. Directly above that patch is the most interesting of all. It is a patch for an admiral. This signifies that he was on an admiral’s staff as his signalman! The obverse’s bottom reveals that the photograph was taken in Weimar by the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar’s official house photographer. More information is on the reverse for the same photographer. Even more interesting, is a dedication in English! As best as I can discern, written in pencil is the following, "Taken in the war year 1914 for rememberance of your very xxxxx xxxxxx." It then is signed by the man in Kiel on 7 October 1914. $30.00

Imperial German Air Service

40-197 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - MAX IMMELMANN’S FUNERAL. Max Immelmann (1890-1916) was among the first super heroes of the Imperial German Air Service. He, along with Oswald Boelcke, was the first of the German aviators to receive the Orden Pour le Mérite in January 1916. By June 1916, Immelmann was dead. This original photograph, which measures 3 1/2" x 5 1/2," shows Immelmann’s funeral procession. His flag-covered casket can be seen being pulled through the streets on a caisson. A large number of German troops are in front and behind his casket. If you look directly behind the caisson, you will note an officer carrying Immelmann’s Ordenkissen (Awards’ Pillow), displaying the decorations he received while alive. The men also carry a number of floral displays. Such scenes were reenacted frequently as WW I progressed and Germany honored her fallen heroes. Immelmann is often remembered for two reasons. First, an aerial maneuver named for him (the Immelmann Turn) is still used by aviators today. Second, the PLM was popularly nicknamed "The Blue Max" in his honor. $45.00

40-200 LARGE-FORMAT PHOTOGRAPH - TAUBE. The Taube was an early-war, single-engine plane used by the Imperial German Air Service. Some information is scribbled on the reverse. $35.00DK

40-168 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - PLM-WINNING BOMBER SQUADRON COMMANDER HAUPTMANN LEO LEONHARDY. Leo Leonhardy (1880-1928) was a late-war winner of the Orden Pour le Mérite. He was a hauptmann during WW I. He commanded a successful bomber squadron, which led to his award barely a month before WW I’s end. I would like to point out that this is an ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH, and not a Sanke or other aviation card. It measures 5 1/2" x 3 1/2." It is printed on postcard stock, yet nevertheless remains an original photograph. Leonhardy is in uniform, with his Fliegertruppen shoulder boards very evident. He is wearing an Iron Cross 1st Class on his left breast. Below that is a Prussian Army Observer’s Badge. In his buttonhole we can see a ribbon for the Iron Cross 2nd Class, and the device for the Knight’s Cross with Swords of the Hohenzollern House Order, which was awarded to him in 1917. At his throat is the coveted PLM. If you look carefully on his right breast, he is wearing an Austrian Field Pilot’s Badge. $75.00

40-169 LARGE-FORMAT ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - PILOT AND OBSERVER - AIRPLANE. This is a large-format original photograph that measures 4 3/4" x 6 1/2." It shows a pilot and observer in their respective airplane cockpits. The observer is aiming a Mauser! I am sure the photo was taken on the ground rather than in the air, but the two men are bundled up and equipped as though they were in the air. Both are wearing the early-war crash helmet that was used by aviators. The photo was taken before observers were equipped with machine guns. $50.00

38-325 SMALL ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF THE DORNIER DO-X. This is a small private photo of the Dornier DO-X Seaplane, which was built by Germany in the 1920's. At the time, it was the largest seaplane in the world. It was a high-wing monoplane, carrying SIX engines with pusher/puller propellers. Friedrich Christiansen, a naval ace and PLM-winner from WW I, was the DO-X’s chief pilot, who gained great attention. Christiansen went on to join the new Luftwaffe and became a general in WW II. He was one of the last PLM-winners to live into the 1960's. The photo measures 2" x 3." It shows a ground crew working on the aircraft at it is tied up to a dock. I know little else about the Dornier DO-X, how successful it really was, or its technical information. Some additional information is penned on the reverse. $10.00

It features nearly a company of soldiers, who are all wearing their stahlhelms. Some very faint writing shows on the reverse. I acquired this along with a large grouping of aviation-related material, but I cannot say for certain it is for the funeral of a pilot. It is an unusually large collection of soldiers, so it must have been for a fairly well-known figure. $20.00

16-99 PAGE FROM A PHOTO ALBUM THAT SHOWS MEMBERS OF JG 77 FROM POST WORLD WAR II GERMANY. The legend of Manfred von Richthofen has been an important part of the German Air Force since he burst on the scene in 1916. He became more revered after his death in 1918. When the Luftwaffe was formed in the 1930's, a Jagdgeschwader (JG) was named in his honor. The men of this fighter wing proudly wore a cuff title attesting to this fact. There was also a special cuff title for the men who had fought in JG 1 with von Richthofen during WW I. Being a part of the "old guard" was an honor and a distinction, which Hermann Göring wanted to make sure was known to all who saw these men in uniform. When WW II ended, the Luftwaffe and the German military were abolished. It was not until the 1950's, with the perceived threat of the USSR and other members of the Eastern Bloc, that the German military was reestablished. When the German Air Force was reinstituted, it was equipped with U.S. fighter aircraft. Initially, that was the legendary F-86 "Saber Jet," which fought so well in Korea in the early 1950's. When Germany was flying again, it was natural for Manfred von Richthofen to be honored (as he had been in WW I and WW II) by having a JG named for him. This became JG 77, which today is still an important part of the German Air Force. It is still an honor to be attached to this unit. Today, we offer a single page from a photo album that has four original photographs. The first photo shows an F-86 with German markings and a shield with an "R" in it. This tells us, of course, that this plane was attached to JG 77, the von Richthofen JG. In a second photograph, we see an officer giving a briefing. He has on the wings of the Air Force, along with a ribbon bar. A third photo shows two officers at attention. Both were clearly heavily decorated in WW II--one man has two ribbon bars and one has three! The final photo shows two young officers along with a wife or girlfriend making a "repair" to a uniform. I have had this page for quite awhile. I look at it often, appreciating the tradition that the "Rote Kampfflieger" brought to the German Air Force. This man, who flew a plane that was little more than a kite with an engine 85 years ago, is still revered and honored by the young men who follow in his footsteps. $65.00

I think he’s wearing Saxon shoulder straps (no guarantee on that. It is just a hunch). Below his image is one of a large cannon firing. No message shows on the reverse. $10.00

40-300 LARGE-FORMAT PHOTOGRAPH - STABLE. This is an original photograph measuring 5" x 6 1/2." A total of seven officers are standing outside a stable. The five men to the right are junior officers. The two on the far left are senior officers. It is very possible that the man farthest left is a general. Both senior officers are wearing neck orders. These could be anything from a Red Eagle to a Crown Order, or even a Pour le Mérite. Studying the two men under magnification, I believe at least one of them has a PLM. Another four men with three horses appear on the right. $20.00

This HUGE photograph measures 23" x 19 1/4." The man is wearing his dienst (everyday service) uniform and a visor cap. If you look at his shoulder straps, you can clearly identify his regiment. $125.00

40-211 MATTED PHOTOGRAPH - SOLDIER HONORING HIS SERVICE IN WW I. This is lovely matted presentation of a soldier that honors his service during WW I. The presentation measures 18” x 14.” It has a plain, beige cardboard outer matting that surrounds another highly decorated matte, a cardboard screen-like section that displays the lettering, then another decorated cardboard frame within the screen section that finally surrounds the photograph itself. Each of the decorated matte’s four corners displays a likeness of the 1914 Iron Cross. Between the Iron Crosses on the sides runs a motif of holly berries and green leaves, along with a high-relief sword and a shield featuring the Hohenzollern Eagle. The top and bottom feature green oak leaves, with high-relief crossed cannons. In the center is the soldier’s photograph. He is wearing a pickelhaube and standing at attention, in what is a studio pose. A special high-relief cardboard “frame” surrounds the photograph, which is set on a beige-painted, screen-like material that is hand-lettered with a sentiment. Directly below the framed photo is another Iron Cross. The sentiment reads “Im Schweren Kampf und Kriegesnot hat mich beschützt der liebe Gott. (In serious battle and war’s distress, I am protected by God’s Love).” Two stars have been hand painted to the left and right of the photograph. Obviously, it was put together by someone who loved this soldier deeply. If you look closely this may have been the basis for a needle point work but was not completed. A small break appears in the right portion of the matte. It is very attractive and would make a captivating display. $95.00

40-367 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH CHILDREN & ADULTS - GERMAN HOLIDAY COLONY. This original photograph shows a group of children with several adults. They hold a sign reading "Ferein-Kolonie Waldidyll 1899," which translates as "Holiday Colony Forest Idyll 1899." The photo’s back, which is set up like a postcard, has been stamped with the following, "Edm. Gebbardt, Charlottenburg, Leonhardtstr. 5." This Charlottenburg address is near the Charlottenburg Palace and remains been a popular shopping area to this day. Although it is part of Berlin today, in the late 19th Century Charlottenburg was more in the countryside. It is possible that a group such as this could have vacationed nearby. $20.00

This photo is from the period of 1909/1910 and shows the officers, NCO’s and enlisted men of the Kompagnie. This is a great uniform study, as it shows some men wearing mutzes and some men wearing pickelhauben. The officers and NCO’s are wearing visor caps. Have a look at the Kompagnie commander in the center. He has one Daschund sitting on his lap and another at his feet! 38-126 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH- INFANTRIE-DIVISION Nr 23. This is an ORIGINAL photograph that has been produced on postcard stock. It is an early war photograph, and shows an interesting contrast among the uniforms of the nine men depicted. The photograph was sent by Feldpost to a loved one back home. From its stampings, it appears that the men belonged to Infantrie-Regiment Nr 281, which was assigned to Infantrie-Division Nr 23. The date on the reverse is 1912, which I find confusing as this certainly appears to be a wartime pose. $20.00

This is a photo of a soldier with his Pickelhaube and his Mauser. It has been enhanced with ink or pencil. The photo is 14" x 18" and the matted image is 17" x 21." 40-252 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - YOUNG BOY - KINDER ULANEN-REGIMENT UNIFORM. This is a most interesting original photograph that shows the Germans’ interest in kinder military uniforms. The young boy, whom I would estimate to be ten to twelve-years-old, is dressed as an Ulanen. It is not a total recreation of the complete uniform, but it is close enough! He is wearing a tschapka, ulanka, and sword. He even has a lance with a pennant. All of it is scaled-down to fit the youngster. The photo has suffered a fold in its right upper corner. The photo of the young man remains compelling. You have to wonder, did he grow up to become an Ulanen? $30.00

While this regiment was nominally Prussian, Battalions Nr 1 and Nr 3 came from Bremen. His shoulder strap is clearly visible, and if you look carefully at his mutze, you can see a Bremen kokarde rather than a Prussian on it. The photo measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/8." It is mounted on a matte measuring 5 1/2" x 3 3/4." $20.00

12-33 STUDIO PORTRAIT. This photo features two soldiers standing with their Mausers. One has a fixed bayonet. Both are wearing pickelhauben and one of them is from the 55th Infantry Regiment. The photo is 19 3/8" x 15 5/8" and is also hand colored. The matte is very decorative and on two sides has furled flags, rifles, and cannons. The size of the matte is 21" x 17 1/4". Above the soldiers on the matte there is a variation of the furled flag with an Iron Cross. On the matte is the inscription "In remembrance from the World War 1914-15." This is a truly interesting matte. Regrettably there is a piece of the lower left corner that has been torn off, but does not affect any of the motifs or the inscription. [Extra shipping is required due to the size of the portrait].  $100.00

38-401 LARGE FORMAT COLORIZED PAINTING - ARTILLERY REGIMENT SOLDIER. This is a large-format, colorized painting of an enlisted man in a Prussian artillery regiment. It measures 15 3/4" x 12," and would look quite impressive framed. The man is wearing a kugelhelm, but in place of its service ball, he is wearing a white parade bush. No number appears on his shoulder straps, just the artillery’s flaming grenade. The white bush and his tunic’s collar indicate that he probably served in one of the Garde-Artillerie-Regiments. It is mounted on cardboard backing, so even if you decide not to frame it, you can still display it. $45.00

12-425 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH - GERMAN CEMETERY. This is a very touching original photograph that was once part of a photo album. It shows a German cemetery in France. One sees several graves in the cemetery with quite ordinary crosses. Then one has a very elaborate metal plaque which identifies the fallen soldier as Gefr. Gustav Niegsch. He was killed on 29 December 1915. He was assigned to Grenadier-Regiment König Friedrich der Große (3. Ostpreußisches) Nr 4. This was a very elite regiment founded in 1626 during the reign of Friedrich the Great. Also inscribed on the plaque is the phrase "Rest Softly in Enemy Soil." 40-49 CdV - GENERALFELDMARSCHALL GRAF von WERDER. Generalfeldmarschall Graf August von Werder (1808-1887) was one of the Prussian Army’s leading generals. He began his service in the Regiment der Garde du Corps in 1825. He also served the following year in 1. Garde Regiment zu Fuß. He achieved the rank of generalmajor in 1863. He fought in the consolidation wars of 1864 against Schleswig-Holstein, and in 1866 against Saxony. In the latter war he was a generalleutnant, commanding a division at Königgratz. He was awarded the Orden Pour le Mérite on 20 September 1866. When war came between Germany in and France in 1870, von Werder was the commander of the XIV. ArmeeKorps. He was a central player in the swift German victory over the French forces, and was awarded the Oak Leaves to the Orden Pour le Mérite on 18 January 1871. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, he was awarded the 1870 Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd Class. He was also one of SEVEN men to receive the 1870 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross on 22 March 1871. In this ORIGINAL CdV, which measures 4 1/8" x 2 1/2," we see him in full dress uniform. He is seen wearing his Grand Cross of the Iron Cross and his PLM. Further, he is wearing a large medal bar, his 1870 EK 1, Breast Stars, etc. Along with the CdV we will include an abstract of his military career, indicating ranks, assignments, and decorations. 40-80 ENLISTED MAN CdV - 1. GARDE-REGIMENT zu FUß. This is an outstanding CdV of an enlisted man that measures 5" x 2 1/2." He served in the 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß. It was the most elite infantry regiment in the Prussian Army. It was to infantry regiments what the Regiment der Garde du Corps was to the cavalry. If anything, the 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß was even more elite, as all princes of the House of Hohenzollern were enrolled in it. The CdV shows the man wearing an overcoat draped over his tunic. He is wearing his white parade belt and buckle. He is also wearing his pickelhaube, with white parade bush, indicating that he served in either Battalion Nr 1 or Battalion Nr 2. Most interesting of all, on a table to the man’s left stands his mitre. The photograph was taken at a studio in Potsdam, where the regiment was garrisoned. This makes a magnificent uniform study. $60.00

38-35 CABINET PHOTOGRAPH OF AN ENLISTED MAN - 2. GARDE-ULANEN-REGIMENT - PRUSSIA. This is a simply wonderful cabinet photograph, measuring 8 1/2" x 5 1/4." It is a studio portrait of a young enlisted man serving in 2. Garde-Ulanen-Regiment. The Prussian Army had a total of three Garde-Ulanen-Regiments. Garde-Ulanen-Regiment Nr 2 was founded in 1819. It was garrisoned in Berlin rather than Potsdam, where her two sister regiments were based. All three of these regiments were a part of the Garde-Korps. The trooper is seated. He is wearing his ulanka with the dress (banjo style) shoulder boards. His tschapka with Garde Star is very evident. He is holding his gloves and his sword complete with portopee. 40-19 NCO’S CdV. This is a CdV of an NCO, I believe, from a cavalry regiment. He is wearing a visor cap and parade belt, and is holding a sword. His tunic has the collar and sleeve trim of an NCO. Most interestingly, just below his elbow on his right sleeve is a patch (in the shape of a horseshoe) that indicates he is his regiment’s farrier. We do not see this specialty patch all that often. I wanted to point it out to you. $20.00

The man is wearing his visor cap and an enlisted man/NCO’s belt and buckle from Mecklenburg-Schwerin. His shoulder straps’ cyphers can clearly be seen. It is a pity, but the CdV has a fold in it. This has been taken into consideration in the price. The photograph was taken in Neustreilitz, which was the capital city of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Streilitz. $15.00

12-350 CARTE de VISTE - SOLDIER. The Carte de Viste (CDV) was a very popular art form for young men in the military both in Europe and in the U.S. from 1860 until WW I. The smallest format of the photographer’s art, the CDV typically measured 2 ½" x 4". This particular example probably dates from 1890 to 1910. It portrays a young soldier who was a musician, most likely at the regimental level. The musician- identifying "swallows nest" can be clearly seen on his right shoulder. While I cannot see his shoulder straps to identify his regiment, I can say that this photograph was taken in the studio of a photographer in Augsburg. Thus, this young man may have been a Bavarian. The name of the photographer can be seen on both the obverse and the reverse. $10.00
