Kaiser Wilhelm II and Kaiserin Augusta Viktoria

38-400 FOUR POSTCARD SET OF - HAUS DOORN - NETHERLANDS. After WW I's end, when Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated Germany’s throne, he entered exile in the Netherlands. Haus (Huis in Dutch)  Doorn was purchased for him at a price of approximately 500,000 Dutch Guilders. He remained at Doorn until the end of his life in  1941. He is buried on the estate’s grounds. Haus Doorn consists of a three-story main building and a few smaller outbuildings. Today, the late emperor’s casket rests in Haus Doorn’s mausoleum. If you peer through its small windows, faintly you can see it. Some of Wilhelm’s pet dachshunds are buried in the garden off the main house. Kaiserin August Victoria died in 1921 at Haus Doorn. Wilhelm married his second wife, Hermine, in 1922. (Hermine survived Wilhelm, left Haus Doorn after his death, and returned to Germany). [Both of Wilhelm’s wives are buried back in Germany].  When Kaiser Wilhelm II departed from Germany, he took a train of some twenty-odd boxcars filled with his personal possessions. More than two-hundred different uniforms were included, along with their matching headdresses, most of his numerous tableware settings, and other personal possessions. Haus Doorn is regularly open to the public, with marvelous guided tours. It has a small gift shop where one can purchase small remembrances of one's visit. During a recent visit, I purchased a small number of their postcards. We are offering them as a group of four cards. Below are descriptions of the four cards encompassing the set:

1) On the second floor is a large circular display case where four uniform groupings are displayed at any one time. On this photograph's left, his parade uniform from the Regiment des Garde du Corps is on display. You will note the officer’s dress tunic, known as a kollar. Over that is a black küraß. The küraß was used only in the Spring Parade. This style of küraß was originally given to the regiment by the Czar of Russia during the Napoleonic Wars, as thank you to his German allies. (Note the Black Eagle on the küraß, worn both as a sash and as a breast star). To the photo's right is the Kaiser's uniform from the Leib-Garde-Husaren-Regiment. (Please note the red parade attila). Over its shoulder is his blue pelisse, trimmed in shearling wool. In front of the grouping is a Generalfeldmarschall’s baton, and behind is the third grouping. If my memory serves me correctly, this is his Kaiserliche Marine grouping, in which he held the rank of Großadmiral. You can see the top of his schirmütze and is his großadmiral's baton. Many other uniform accouterments are also displayed. Two other display cases built into the walls show schirmützen and shoulder boards. This is my favorite part of the residence. You never know what groups of uniforms you will see.

2) This is a closet at Haus Doorn, where many of the Kaiser’s uniforms are stored. Below the tunics you will note many of the matching, correct boots. A pair of parade shoulder boards, a belt and other accouterments  also are present. At the closet's top are many storage boxes for pickelhauben, schmirmützen, busbies, etc. If you are anything like me, your tongue is hanging out right now!

3) Kaiser Wilhelm was a true militarist. While his army was important to him, his navy absolutely was the apple of his eye. Nothing gave him greater pleasure than to visit his fleet, sail on his royal yacht, the S. M. Y. Hohenzollern, or sail on his racing sloops. In this photograph, the S. M. Y. Hohenzollern is either arriving or departing from the port at Kiel. The vessel projected not only Germany’s power as it sailed abroad, but the Kaiser and his family’s majesty. The vessel carried many of his castles’ luxuries for him when he sailed.

4) As Kaiser, Wilhelm II was the head of the German Army and Navy. As the Kaiserliche Marine's commander, Wilhelm was a Großadmiral. Here he wears the uniform of his rank. He wears an officer’s summer (white cover) schirmütze, and a navy frock coat. The bullion stripes on his coat sleeve consist of one wide band, with four narrow bands above it. These indicate a Großadmiral. (One stripe is a Konteradmiral, two indicate a Vizeadmiral, and three stand for an Admiral).

This is a high-caliber postcard grouping, certainly a museum grade. We are pleased to offer these FOUR fine cards to you on a limited basis. (Please do not ask us to separate the sets -- they ONLY will be sold as sets). $15.00

38-1690 DELUXE COLOR POSTCARD - PERIOD - 1881-1906 (SILVER ANNIVERSARY - KAISER AND KAISERIN). This is an absolutely spectacular color postcard which depicts Kaiser Wilhelm II and his wife, Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria, from their wedding in 1881 through their silver wedding anniversary in 1906. The Kaiser is wearing the Garde du Corps’ uniform and Hohenzollern Eagle-topped helmet. Below the royal couple’s images is a crowned Hohenzollern Eagle. Below that is, I believe, the castle in Berlin, Charlottenburg. In the castle’s center is a small window. A wheel protrudes from the postcard’s sides which, when turned, showcases each of the royal family’s children. This includes the six princes and one princess that were born to them. Two of the princes were shown with their wives, whom they had married by 1906. Each of the children is depicted at their ages in 1906. While you may not be able to see it from the attached photos, several of the areas are beautifully embossed. The silver portions are quite handsome. We have never seen this postcard before. It is spectacular! $50.00

38-2131 POSTCARD - KAISER WILHELM II. This postcard of Kaiser Wilhelm II is a wonderful uniform study. The postcard was issued in 1913, celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of his rise to Germany’s throne. He is in a generalfeldmarschall’s uniform. Otto von Bismarck

38-946 POSTCARD - OTTO von BISMARCK. Otto von Bismarck (1813-1898) is one of German history’s leading political figures. He became Germany’s first Chancellor in 1871, after Prussia’s King Wilhelm I was crowned Germany’s first Kaiser. Bismarck was greatly involved in Germany’s unification, as She worked her way through the unification wars of 1864 and 1866, and the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War, which was the final step. He was a master of foreign policy. He was also at the forefront of social welfare changes made in Germany. He was retired from his post in 1890 by Kaiser Wilhelm II. This followed Wilhelm’s 1888 assumption of the throne, after the deaths of his grandfather, Wilhelm I, and his father, Friedrich III. Wilhelm II and von Bismarck had monumental differences regarding the future role of Germany’s foreign policy. A key difference was Wilhelm II’s desire to expand Germany’s overseas colonies. Bismarck felt strongly that this would bring Germany into conflict with other European powers, especially Great Britain. The last five years of von Bismarck’s life were relatively quiet. This pose shows him in retirement at some point after 1890. $15.00
