Patriotic items from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 are quite scarce. They were never produced in the numbers that things were for WW I. This item is actually a boutonniere. The obverse is enameled, and features an undated Iron Cross. Around the edge, however, we see "Zur Erinnerung An 1870." This boutonniere measures 1" in diameter. $125.00
32-34 PATRIOTIC 1870 IRON CROSS BOUTONNIERE.
32-51 KAISER SPENDE BADGE.
17-342 PATRIOTIC PIN. This is one of the most unusual patriotic pins I have ever found. It is unusual not only in construction but in background. First, the pin is in three parts. At the very top we have a pair of outspread eagle's wings, intertwined with a victory wreath. Second, the wings are attached to another extremely detailed wreath, which once again appears to be made of laurel leaves for victory. The third part is a vaulted enameled 1914 Iron Cross. Now, here is where this piece gets really interesting. On the reverse we see that the piece is hallmarked for a jeweler in New York! It is also hallmarked for sterling silver. So, we have a piece definitely made in the U.S. after August 1914 and before the U.S. entered the war in 1917(and public opinion turned against Germany). I bought this in Germany. At some point, it somehow made the trip across the Atlantic! I cannot say with total certainty that it traveled during the war years. Maybe a collector sent it over. Regardless, it is a gorgeous piece and very well made. Even though early 20th Century American jewelers might not have had the reputations of their European brethren, this piece is certainly the equal of German quality. Perhaps someone of German heritage, anticipating a German victory early in the war, commissioned it for a relative back in the Kaiser Reich. One can speculate endlessly. $185.00
32-36 PATRIOTIC PIN FROM COIN COMMEMORATING KING WILHELM I AND HIS WIFE. This features an actual German silver coin from 1861. It commemorates the anniversary of King (later Kaiser) Wilhelm I and his wife. The coin is encased in a special holder that turns it into a pin that can be worn on a garment. The holder is a silver wreath of exquisitely intricate oak leaves. It is topped by a gold crown. This is a very elaborate and finely made patriotic pin fashioned to honor the royal couple. $175.00
17-409 PATRIOTIC TRENCH ART PIN IN A PRESENTATION CASE. This is a distinctive trench art patriotic pin measuring 1 5/8" in length. An eagle with widespread wings is centered on the obverse of the pin. The eagles background consists of a crosshatched rectangle decorated with a leafy sprig. The reverse is engraved "1914-17." This pin is housed in a custom case that measures 2 1/8" x 2 1/8." The case features a 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class on its outer lid. It is very similar to EK 1 cases in this respect. Inside the case we have a blue/purple velvet platform on which the pin is mounted. The name of the jeweler is embossed on the inner upper lid. It is a very worthy presentation. $195.00 .
17-423 IRON CROSS PATRIOTIC PINS. I was really taken by this dazzling pair of Iron Cross patriotic pins. I will describe them individually. You may purchase them together or separately, as you prefer. The first of the two pins is circular and measures 1 1/4" in diameter. The frame is filigreed and silver-toned, although not actually silver. The center of the pin is constructed of two pieces that have been attached. The lower portion is a handsome, dark-blue, rounded and vaulted porcelain bisque. Attached to that is a stunning white, vaulted Iron Cross trimmed in black. This pin is impeccably made and of the highest caliber. This second pin is identical to the first in every respect, except that the bisque centerpiece is hand painted in a sumptuous burgundy. The condition of this example is equal to the blue piece. Both are ravishingly ornate and splendid. You may purchase either of these lovely patriotic pins for $150.00 a piece, or the pair for $275.00. .
32-18 PATRIOTIC IRON CROSS PIN. Here is another early war Iron Cross patriotic pin. It is very well made and of very high quality. It has a delightful, teal-colored frame decorated with a hammered (dimpled) effect. A finely-made 1916 Iron Cross is mounted on an inner structure of intricate, spider-weblike lattice work. It is in splendid condition. $125.00. . .
17-507 PATRIOTIC PIN "HEIL UND SEIG." This is a square patriotic pin that measures 1" x 1." It features alternating lines of black and silver enamel. In the pin’s center is the slogan "Heil und Seig." On the reverse of the pin is "1914." It is a high-quality, early-war, patriotic pin. As a rule, the earlier the pin, the better the quality. $125.00
17-272 CIRCULAR PATRIOTIC PIN. This patriotic pin has a gathered ribbon on which a Hohenzollern Eagle is mounted. Below the pin is a crossed pick and shovel. This would appear to have been for some sort of a trade organization. I find this particularly interesting in that every level of society and every trade wanted to show their support for the government and to brandish their patriotism. $110.00 .
32-50
DRIVING BAND PIN. This is a patriotic pin. It
shows an Iron Cross on a piece of artillery shell driving band. It is very
well made, and in fine condition.
$75.00
32-47
WW I SWISS SERVICEMAN'S MEDAL.
32-48 STAHLHELM VETERAN’S BADGE,
32-49 GOLD FOR IRON PATRIOTIC PIN.
This is a patriotic pin made from three connected Russian coins. The middle has had all of the coin removed, except for the two-headed Russian Eagle. This is flanked by two 10 Kopeck coins from 1914. A pin and clasp were originally mounted on the reverse. The pin is now gone, but the clasp remains. $50.00
17-532 PATRIOTIC PIN - RUSSIAN COINS.
17-316 PATRIOTIC PIN OF AN IRON CROSS. This is a small iron Cross that measures about ¾" x ¾". The obverse is made of enamel and is a duplicate of a 1914 Iron Cross. There is a small chip, but it is not detractive. $85.00 .
. .
32-20 PATRIOTIC PIN IN ORIGINAL PRESENTATION CASE. This patriotic pin commemorates the Silver Wedding Anniversary (1881-1906) of Kaiser Wilhelm II and Kaiserin August Victoria. A profile of the royal couple is on a gilt-toned disc that is fitted into a frame. In turn, the pin is fitted into a presentation case from a firm located in Frankfurt. It is a lovely pin housed in a handsome case. $150.00 . . .
17-298 PATRIOTIC PIN. This patriotic pin, which is oval-shaped, is really quite delicate. It is one of my favorite varieties of patriotic pins. The multicolored enamel design looks like gaily colored pressed flowers (there are seven of them of different colors and sizes) on the left side of the pin. On the right side is a 1914 Iron Cross. All of this is then under glass, which in some ways makes it look like a very fancy paper weight. This is just so delicate! I can remember only coming across this type once or twice in the past. I believe the glass on one was damaged. This one is stunning. It would make a wonderful gift for a special someone! $150.00 .....
32-46 PATRIOTIC PIN WITH YOUNG SOLDIER’S PHOTOGRAPH.
Patriotic pins, which allowed the wearer to insert a loved one’s photo as the
pin’s central subject, were quite popular during WW I among the wives,
mothers, sisters, and sweethearts of soldiers at the front. This pin with
photo measures 1" in diameter. I can tell nothing about the solder in the
image. It gives no clue about his regiment, etc. It is very well made, and in
excellent condition. $125.00
17-248 PATRIOTIC PIN. This pin was made from a section of a driving band from an artillery shell. The pin is gilt colored. It has a representation of an edelweiss on the front along with a dangling enamel Iron Cross. This is a very unusual variation. $90.00
17-359 TRENCH ART PATRIOTIC PIN. This pin is silver-toned. The basic frame is a part of an artillery driving band. Mounted on the driving band is an eagle with widespread wings. A small dangler mounted at the bottom sports a wee Iron Cross. $50.00 .
.
17-358 TRENCH ART BULLET SHAPED PATRIOTIC PIN. This is an interesting variation of a patriotic pin. The dates 1914 and 1915 and an Iron Cross have been etched on half of a bullets projectile, which has been turned into a pin. A very small dangler is connected to the bullet/pin. The dangler features a profile view of Kaiser Wilhelm II and Kaiser Franz-Josef of Austria. This was a common theme showing Germany and Austria united, facing the threat of the British, French, and Russians. The result is a prettily-made piece of trench art. $55.00 . .
17-350 PATRIOTIC PIN. This is an fascinating variation of a patriotic pin. It is a re-creation of a part of the Hussar uniform. It is hand painted in blue. The whole effect is quite striking. $95.00
. . .
32-56 MISC. PIN. This is a gold-toned tin pin shaped like a Japanese warlord’s helmet. It features the words "Kobea," "Japonica," and the numbers "284." It may have come from an exhibition or some sort of fraternal order. $3.00
This is a small, patriotic, Iron Cross pin. It measures 3/4" in diameter. The enamel black Iron Cross is in the center. A green enamel wreath surrounds it. $75.00
32-54 PATRIOTIC IRON CROSS PIN.
This pin measures 1/2" x 1 1/8." Its central theme is a black Iron Cross, with the date 1914 in the center. Flanking the Iron Cross are banners. The one on the left represents Prussia. On the right are Bavaria’s colors. $65.00
32-55 PATRIOTIC IRON CROSS PIN - NATIONAL COLORS - PRUSSIA AND BAVARIA.
32-46 PATRIOTIC PIN WITH YOUNG SOLDIER’S PHOTOGRAPH. Patriotic pins, which allowed the wearer to insert a loved one’s photo as the pin’s central subject, were quite popular during WW I among the wives, mothers, sisters, and sweethearts of soldiers at the front. This pin with photo measures 1" in diameter. I can tell nothing about the solder in the image. It gives no clue about his regiment, etc. It is very well made, and in excellent condition. $125.00
17-320 PATRIOTIC PHOTO PIN OF A SOLDIER. Germans highly prized the patriotic pins from before and during WW I that allowed one to insert in them photos of loved ones who were serving in the military. I personally find these very poignant. I often wonder how the young men fared during the war. This is an ornate example of a very young soldier. He was, I believe, a member of one of the better-known grenadier regiments. The pin is very detailed. It has what appear to be faux pearls at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 oclock positions. The pin is in excellent condition. $185.00
17-287 DRIVING BAND PATRIOTIC PIN. This is one of the ever-popular patriotic pins made from the driving band of a German artillery shell. The pin is gilt. It features an enameled Iron Cross flanked by branches of laurel leaves. There is no end to the variety of these pins. Each one is a little different. $80.00
17-400 1914 PATRIOTIC IRON CROSS PIN. This is a finely enameled patriotic Iron Cross pin. It is dated 1914-15. Its surface is black and gold. It features very fine detail and is in good condition. $90.00
This is a very high-quality Iron Cross patriotic pin. It is round with an enameled outer rim. In the center as a dangler is an enameled Iron Cross. It is in very fine condition. $100.00
32-33 PATRIOTIC IRON CROSS PIN.
32-39 KRIEGSFLAGGE PIN.
32-40 PATRIOTIC PIN.
This is a fascinating variation of a patriotic pin. It is oval-shaped and measures 1" x 3/4." It has a gold frame. Inside the frame is a black, silk background, with the legend "Kriegerverein Henrichshutte 1871-1914" embossed on it in gold. In the center is an Iron Cross. The pin was for a veteran’s organization that was founded in 1871 for the Franco-Prussian War. $75.00
32-31 PATRIOTIC PIN - WAR VETERANS’ ASSOCIATION.
17-390 KAISER WILHELM II AND THE KAISERIN PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a very high quality patriotic pin of the Kaiser and Kaiserin. The pin is made from a Two-Mark coin, which was minted in 1901. The obverse has a profile of the royal couple with the Kaiser wearing a Garde du Corps helmet, complete with the Hohenzollern Eagle. The reverse also pictures a beautiful Hohenzollern Eagle. The coin is mounted in a fancy frame with a crown at the top. It has a pin with which it can be attached to a garment. $125.00
17-362 PATRIOTIC IRON CROSS PIN. This lovely circular patriotic pin features a green enamel wreath. It has a delicate black and silver enameled 1914 Iron Cross dangling in its center. It is a perfectly splendid early war piece. $110.00

.
17-421 PATRIOTIC IRON CROSS PIN. This is a horizontal pin with a small enameled Iron Cross mounted on it. The Iron Cross is dated 1914-15, making this an early war piece. $60.00 . .
17-296 PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a circular patriotic pin. It is two-colored and about the size of a U.S. quarter. The basic color is black. Superimposed over that is a 1914 Iron Cross in white. It is a high-quality piece in excellent condition. $140.00.....
17-288 PATRIOTIC ENAMELED IRON CROSS PIN ON ORIGINAL SALES CARD. This is a fairly standard patriotic pin featuring a black enamel Iron Cross with gold trim. What really makes this piece stand out, besides its condition, is that it comes on its original sales card. This is the same card on which it was produced 85 years ago! The card features a crossed national flag and a kriegsflagge in one of its corners. When I am fortunate enough to find something like this, I am always quite pleased. Besides helping to maintain the condition of a piece, it gives us a glimpse of the manner in which patriotic Germans purchased such items. Quite rare! $175.00
17-432 TRENCH ART PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a very delicate, early war patriotic pin. It is dated 1914-16. A small, circular black-colored stone appears in its center. Weltkrieg is also mentioned on the pin. Finally, a small enameled Iron Cross dangler hangs from the bottom of the pin. $75.00 . . . .
32-28 PATRIOTIC PIN. This is an interesting square pin that is set-up so the badge is set on a corner instead of a flat space. It has the Cypher of Kaiser Wilhelm II with the Hohenzollern Crown over it. It has a legend that reads "Ein Reich, Ein Volk, Ein Gott," which is a very important, central theme to the people of Imperial Germany. We also see the date 27 January and the dates 1859 and 1915. Thus, this pin would have celebrated the 56th birthday of Kaiser Wilhelm II. It is well-made and in prime condition. $75.00
17-293 PATRIOTIC PIN. This patriotic pin is made from the driving band of an artillery shell. The obverse of the pin has a design of laurel leaves. Three small red stones on the leaves simulate either buds or berries. Dangling down from the pin is a small black enameled 1914 Iron Cross. This pin is a well made, interesting variation of the popular driving band pins of the period. $85.00 .....
17-289 OVAL IRON CROSS PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a rather novel oval-shaped patriotic pin. The surface appears to be a flat black enamel on which a silver-toned Iron Cross has been etched. In the middle of the cross is a small pearl. The reverse of the pin confirms that the piece is .800 silver. $175.00
17-284 PATRIOTIC PIN. This is one of the ever-popular patriotic pins made from the driving band of an artillery shell. On the pin we see the dates "1914-1915," which flank a small Iron Cross. 17-380 IRON CROSS PATRIOTIC PIN. This is an extremely interesting and well-made Iron Cross patriotic pin. It is quite massive, measuring 2" in diameter. It has an intricate and exquisitely made silver filigreed obverse. In the center of the pin is a finely enameled 1914 Iron Cross. $95.00.

It features the crossed national flags of allies Imperial Austria and Imperial Germany on its top. The flags colors are done in enamel, while the bullets "casing" is painted gold and its tip is either black enamel or perhaps painted wood. A small silver coin dangles from the bottom of the pin featuring Franz Josef and Wilhelm II in profile. $60.00 .
17-148 BAYONET PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a patriotic pin in the shape of the bayonet suitable for use on a K-98 Mauser rifle. The handle is white enamel. It is in very good condition. It is unusual to find a bayonet or sword as the subject for a patriotic pin. $50.00.
17-227 IRON CROSS PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a superior quality, two-color enamel patriotic pin measuring 1 1/4" x 1 1/4." It is made to look like an Iron Cross. The piece is in very fine condition. $85.00 . .
17-411 TRENCH ART PATRIOTIC PIN. This is one of the ever-popular trench art patriotic pins made from bits of artillery shell driving band. It is very well made and in fine condition. $75.00. . . .
17-412 CIRCULAR PATRIOTIC IRON CROSS PIN. I have yet to come across a pin quite like this. It is domed. On top of a glass protector we see a small enameled black Iron Cross. Underneath the glass covering we see what appears to be a white moonstone. This is very interesting and well made. $110.00 . . .
17-225 CIRCULAR PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a fine example of a patriotic pin, which is along the order of a mourning pin. It is black and has a 1914 Iron Cross on it. It is in very fine condition. $75.00 . .
17-190 MOURNING PATRIOTIC PIN. Patriotic mourning jewelry is a completely different genre from other patriotic jewelry. It represents a female who mourns for the loss of a sweetheart, husband, brother, etc. during the Great War. I do not run across it all that often. It makes for an interesting and touching contrast to the more commonly-seen patriotic jewelry. This particular piece features a high relief rose that is set into a rectangular-shaped base. A clip rather than a pin is attached on the reverse. $50.00
17-258 ENAMELED CIRCULAR PATRIOTIC PIN. This pin has a black and white cross-shaped motif. In the center we see an Iron Cross with the date "1915" on it. An early war example complete with an enamel face. $75.00
17-254 PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a circular patriotic pin that measures 1" in diameter. It is black and may well be a mourning pin. There is an Iron Cross in the center of a wreath of leaves. In very nice condition. $65.00
17-345 CIRCULAR PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a circular patriotic pin that measures 1 ½" in diameter. It is quite large and well-made. There is a circular enameled band around an Iron Cross in the center. The black band originally had two rhinestones at the "12," "3," "6," and "9" oclock positions. Four of the eight small rhinestones are now missing, but this remains a very handsome pin. $60.00 . . .
32-22 CIRCULAR 1915 IRON CROSS PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a well-made early WW I patriotic pin with an Iron Cross motif. The pin measures 7/8" in diameter. A gold and black, gold-dotted circle surrounds a black and gold Iron Cross, which sports the date 1915 in its center. This is a fine early war Iron Cross patriotic piece. $95.00 . . .
32-14 IRON CROSS-RELATED PATRIOTIC PIN. This patriotic pin is a rather novel and intriguing example. It is a square design, which is then tuned on its edge with one of the four corners pointing downwards. It is suspended from a gilt-toned safety pin. The badges case is also gilt-toned, with a very fancy design. The interior of the badge is a two-sided affair. One side represents Hamburgs city flag. The other side displays an Iron Cross with the initials "MVK" on three of the arms and the date 1881. It appears to be for some kind of group. This is a membership or support pin. It is marvelously done, very colorful, and of course, quite singular. $95.00. . .
17-372 PATRIOTIC PIN. This pin is from a very small niche in patriotic jewelry. It was something done early in the war as Germany conquered territory both on the Western and Eastern Fronts. Belgian coins were fashioned into a pin that a lady could have worn to support the armys efforts. Perhaps she wore it to honor a relative or loved one serving in the army. Two of the three coins have a small rhinestone in the center, which gives the set some real sparkle. $75.00 .
. .
17-373 PATRIOTIC IRON CROSS PIN. This is a very well made patriotic Iron Cross pin. The obverse is made of enamel. The cross is gold-toned with black trim. It measures 7/8" x 7/8". $75.00 . . .
17-374 PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a rather interesting form of trench art patriotic jewelry. It consists of the projectile from a rifle bullet. The nose of it is slightly curved to give it the appearance of having been shot. Attached to the lead of the projectile are two sets of oak leaves with acorns. It makes an intriguing variation. $60.00 .
17-256 PATRIOTIC DRIVING BAND PIN. This is one of the ever-popular patriotic pins that was made from the driving band of an artillery shell. The center of the pin has the German national flag. To the left of that is the date 1914 and to the right is 1915. Dangling from the pin is an enameled 1914 Iron Cross. $75.00
17-268 TRENCH ART 12 - YEAR LONG - SERVICE DECORATION. Some enterprising soldier took a 12-Year Long-Service Decoration, which is gilt-toned. To it he attached a piece of brass with the words "Welt Krieg." The brass piece also has a laurel leaf design on it. He made himself a very handsome article with a pin on the reverse to attach it to a garment. We are very pleased to offer it to you today. $75.00. .
17-218 PATRIOTIC PIN IN THE SHAPE OF A SWORD. This is a most interesting patriotic pin that is shaped like a sword. It measures just a bit more than 2" in length. On the hilt and cross guard there is a small medallion with the likeness of Friedrich the Great. $75.00 .
17-407 TRENCH ART PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a very fine example of an early-war trench art patriotic pin. This pin is made from a small piece of artillery shells driving band. Affixed to that is a pair of oak leaves complete with acorns. Between them is a recreation of an artillery shell dated "1915." This is well-made and of the highest quality $65.00.
17-404 HORIZONTAL PATRIOTIC PIN. This is an interesting early war patriotic pin. It measures 2 3/8" in length. It is dated 1914 on the pins extreme left. The pin tapers from left to right, rather like a nail laid on its side. Three sets of enamel stripes to the right of the 1914 represent the national colors of Germany, Austria, and Hungary. The back of the pin shows hallmarks for manufacturer and for silver. $95.00. . .
32-13 PATRIOTIC IRON CROSS PIN. This is a pretty variation of the Iron Cross patriotic pin from WW I. The pin measures 7/8" x 7/8" and is enameled on the obverse. The center of the pin, which is shaped like an Iron Cross, has the national colors of Imperial Germany: red, black, and white. Three of the four arms display "Gott Mit Uns," while the fourth shows the date 1915. This is an early war example of a patriotic pin that is quite pleasing. $95.00. . .
17-219 OVAL TWO-PIECE IRON CROSS PATRIOTIC PIN. This is just a really interesting patriotic pin. I have never seen one quite like it. Ill do my best to describe it well. First, there is an irregularly shaped oval frame that is made of small multicolored enamel chips. Dangling down in the center from this frame is a silver wreath with an enameled black and silver 1914 Iron Cross. This is in outstanding condition. If you give this to a significant other, they will truly appreciate its color and beauty. $95.00.

17-161 OVAL SHAPED PATRIOTIC PIN. This is a most interesting oval-shaped patriotic pin. The surface of the pin is black enamel with a gold Iron Cross in the center. There is a very small surface nick in the black enamel. It is not detractive to the overall pin. $125.00
17-239 WOMAN'S PATRIOTIC MEDAL FOR THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF KAISER WILHELM I. This is a high-quality patriotic medal that was worn by a woman. The obverse features a profile of Kaiser Wilhelm I (the Grandfather of Wilhelm II) wearing the Hohenzollern Crown. On the other side we see a memorial to Wilhelm I. An inscription speaks about the one-hundredth year anniversary of his birth in 1797. Attached to the jump ring is a double bow that is yellow, blue, and red. $65.00.
17-128 PATRIOTIC MOURNING PIN. A very touching patriotic pin that was worn during mourning. It is 4" long and has a six sided blank area in the center where initials could possibly have been etched but never was. This looks to be a mint and never used piece. $60.00.
17-01 IRON CROSS PIN. This is a very unique circular Iron Cross pin. What makes it unique is that it is a mourning piece and is black(it photographed bronze, but is actually black). Further on the reverse a small photo of the deceased wearing a Pickelhaube is shown which would indicate that it is an early war piece and would date prior to 1916. $65.00
17-11 SQUARE PATRIOTIC PIN. Has an Iron Cross and the Bavarian Lion and flag. Hallmarked .800 silver and is very high quality. Unusual Bavarian piece. $110.00

On either side of the Iron Cross is a pair of coins from Belgium, which Germany overran early during the war in 1914. The coins are dated "1905" and "1915." Each coin has a green stone mounted in its center. $75.00. .
17-444 PATRIOTIC COIN PIN. This patriotic pin spotlights a silvered center, highlighting what appears to be the word "Wilna" in stylized script. On either side of the center is a pair of Russian coins. The coins are dated "1914" and feature the two-headed Imperial Russian Eagle. An Iron Cross dangles below the centerpiece. This is a very neatly made, attractive item from the Eastern Front. $75.00. .
17-445 PATRIOTIC IRON CROSS COIN PIN. This patriotic pin features an Iron Cross in its center, displaying the dates "1914, 1915, and 1916." Inside we see a pre WW I Uhlan wearing his uhlanka and tschapka. He is also holding his lance in his hand, further confirming he is an Uhlan. The embroidery appears on a creme-colored background in four different colors. Below his feet we see the year 1917. It measures 2" x 1 1/2." No pin appears on the reverse. [One of our well-informed readers let us know that this is a Third Reich "Winterhilfswerk Spendabzeichen", or "Donation Award." It was one of a series of approximately 12, which illustrated German military dress from the 16th Century up to 1918. Thanks, Lee]! $50.00 . . .
