17-580 REGIMENTAL PATRIOTIC PIN - LEIB-GRENADIER-REGIMENT Nr 8 - PRUSSIA. This is a simply superb patriotic regimental pin for a very elite Prussian regiment. This regiment is unique among Prussian regiments, because it had a special, one-of-a-kind designation. While various types of infantry regiments existed within the Prussian Army (Füsilier, Grenadier, Fuß, and Infanterie), they primarily fell into Garde or non Garde status. It was the only Prussian infantry regiment that carried "Leib" or "Life" status. Three Prussian Husaren-Regiments (one Leib-Garde-Regiment and two Leib-Regiments) and one Prussian Küraßier-Regiment, carried "Leib" status. Saxony, Baden, and Hesse-Darmstadt had infantry and/or cavalry Leib-Regiments. The unusual Prussian infantry regiment of which we speak is Leib-Grenadier-Regiment König Friedrich Wilhelm III (1. Brandenburgisches) Nr 8. The regiment was raised in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars in 1809. It was garrisoned at Frankfurt a. O., and assigned to the III. ArmeeKorps. The pin itself is of the highest quality. It measures 1 1/2" x 3/4." Its central theme is a shield bearing König Friedrich Wilhelm III’s regimental cypher. I believe the shield is made of GOLD. Flanking the shield are some wonderful oak leaves (just branches, not a full wreath). Also atop the shield is a handsomely-crafted Hohenzollern Crown. It is very full with a high-relief effect. In turn, an elegant, horizontal, oval-shaped wreath surrounds the crown, shield, and oak leaves. An attractive pin is featured on its reverse. This is a magnificent piece from one of the most elite Prussian infantry regiments. When you have it in your hands, you will marvel at the quality of its design and construction. $975.00

17-581 REGIMENTAL PATRIOTIC PIN - INFANTERIE REGIMENT Nr 80 - PRUSSIA. This is an ultra high-quality patriotic regimental pin, which was purchased for an officer’s wife, sweetheart, mother, sister, etc. He served in Füsilier-Regiment von Gersdorff (Kurhessisches) Nr 80. The regiment was founded in 1813. Battalions Nr 1 and Nr 2 were located in Wiesbaden, while Battalion Nr 3 was garrisoned in Homburg. The regiment was attached to the XVIII. ArmeeKorps. The pin sports a beautiful gilt finish. This high gilt finish is laid over .925 silver. The pin is so marked on the reverse. On the obverse, the regiment’s cypher appears within a beautiful oak and laurel leaf wreath. The cypher and wreath are topped by a beautiful, slotted crown. The detail on the reverse is equally enticing. A very sturdy high quality pin and catch are in place that allow the pin to be fixed to a garment. The pin measures 1 1/4" x 3/4." This serves as a reminder of the superior-quality people from the Imperial German Period expected from patriotic jewelry purveyors. Excellence was VERY important to the people that gave and received these items. This man was extremely proud of his regiment. The loved one to whom he gave this pin shared and reinforced that pride when she wore it. $550.00

17-582 PATRIOTIC PIN - KAISER WILHELM II AND KAISERIN AUGUSTA VIKTORIA - TWO-MARK SILVER COIN. Over the years I have offered similar pins on more than one occasion. The heart and soul of this very handsome patriotic pin is a silver, German Two-Mark coin measuring 1 3/4" in diameter. The coin’s obverse features Kaiser Wilhelm II wearing a Regiment der Garde du Corps helmet, complete with the massive Hohenzollern Eagle. The Kaiser is seen in profile. Behind him is his wife, Kaiserin Augusta Viktoria, the mother of his six sons and one daughter. The coin’s reverse displays a Hohenzollern Eagle with outspread wings. The coin is dated 1901. It features "Deutsches Reich" and the denomination. The coin is housed in a beautiful holder shaped like a wreath of laurel leaves. A bow at the bottom ties the wreath together. At the top of the wreath is a Hohenzollern Crown. All of this is beautifully done. The bow and crown are in high-relief. The reverse has a pin with a safety catch. While the coin and pin holder have acquired a wonderful patina over the last 100+ years, the piece’s condition is little different from when it was assembled by a loving craftsman in 1901. $225.00

32-75 AUSTRIAN PATRIOTIC PIN. The Austrians were noted for their enamel work. This patriotic pin is no exception. It measures 1" in diameter. Its outer edge is trimmed with gold-toned metal. The pin’s background is under glass. This is a gorgeous silver-white in color, with a mottled texture that suggests snakeskin or leather. The pin’s center is dominated by a gold-toned, black and red-enameled, two-headed Austrian royal eagle. The eagles’ wings’ detailing is quite good for this type of pin. $195.00

17-342 PATRIOTIC PIN. This is one of the most unusual patriotic pins I have ever found. It is unusual not only in construction but in background. First, the pin is in three parts. At the very top we have a pair of outspread eagle's wings, intertwined with a victory wreath. Second, the wings are attached to another extremely detailed wreath, which once again appears to be made of laurel leaves for victory. The third part is a vaulted enameled 1914 Iron Cross. Now, here is where this piece gets really interesting. On the reverse we see that the piece is hallmarked for a jeweler in New York! It is also hallmarked for sterling silver. So, we have a piece definitely made in the U.S. after August 1914 and before the U.S. entered the war in 1917(and public opinion turned against Germany). I bought this in Germany. At some point, it somehow made the trip across the Atlantic! I cannot say with total certainty that it traveled during the war years. Maybe a collector sent it over. Regardless, it is a gorgeous piece and very well made. Even though early 20th Century American jewelers might not have had the reputations of their European brethren, this piece is certainly the equal of German quality. Perhaps someone of German heritage, anticipating a German victory early in the war, commissioned it for a relative back in the Kaiser Reich. One can speculate endlessly. $185.00

The holder is a silver wreath of exquisitely intricate oak leaves. It is topped by a gold crown. This is a very elaborate and finely made patriotic pin fashioned to honor the royal couple. $175.00

17-423 IRON CROSS PATRIOTIC PINS. I was really taken by this dazzling pair of Iron Cross patriotic pins. I will describe them individually. You may purchase them together or separately, as you prefer. The first of the two pins is circular and measures 1 1/4" in diameter. The frame is filigreed and silver-toned, although not actually silver. The center of the pin is constructed of two pieces that have been attached. The lower portion is a handsome, dark-blue, rounded and vaulted porcelain bisque. Attached to that is a stunning white, vaulted Iron Cross trimmed in black. This pin is impeccably made and of the highest caliber. This second pin is identical to the first in every respect, except that the bisque centerpiece is hand painted in a sumptuous burgundy. The condition of this example is equal to the blue piece. Both are ravishingly ornate and splendid. You may purchase either of these lovely patriotic pins for $150.00 a piece, or the pair for $275.00. .

17-272 CIRCULAR PATRIOTIC PIN. This patriotic pin has a gathered ribbon on which a Hohenzollern Eagle is mounted. Below the pin is a crossed pick and shovel. 17-298 PATRIOTIC PIN. This patriotic pin, which is oval-shaped, is really quite delicate. It is one of my favorite varieties of patriotic pins. The multicolored enamel design looks like gaily colored pressed flowers (there are seven of them of different colors and sizes) on the left side of the pin. On the right side is a 1914 Iron Cross. All of this is then under glass, which in some ways makes it look like a very fancy paper weight. This is just so delicate! I can remember only coming across this type once or twice in the past. I believe the glass on one was damaged. This one is stunning. It would make a wonderful gift for a special someone! $150.00

32-46 PATRIOTIC PIN WITH YOUNG SOLDIER’S PHOTOGRAPH. Patriotic pins, which allowed the wearer to insert a loved one’s photo as the pin’s central subject, were quite popular during WW I among the wives, mothers, sisters, and sweethearts of soldiers at the front. This pin with photo measures 1" in diameter. I can tell nothing about the solder in the image. The dangler features a profile view of Kaiser Wilhelm II and Kaiser Franz-Josef of Austria. This was a common theme showing Germany and Austria united, facing the threat of the British, French, and Russians. The result is a prettily-made piece of trench art. $55.00 . .

17-320 PATRIOTIC PHOTO PIN OF A SOLDIER. Germans highly prized the patriotic pins from before and during WW I that allowed one to insert in them photos of loved ones who were serving in the military. I personally find these very poignant. I often wonder how the young men fared during the war. This is an ornate example of a very young soldier. He was, I believe, a member of one of the better-known grenadier regiments. The pin is very detailed. It has what appear to be faux pearls at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions. 17-288 PATRIOTIC ENAMELED IRON CROSS PIN ON ORIGINAL SALES CARD. This is a fairly standard patriotic pin featuring a black enamel Iron Cross with gold trim. What really makes this piece stand out, besides its condition, is that it comes on its original sales card. This is the same card on which it was produced 85 years ago! The card features a crossed national flag and a kriegsflagge in one of its corners. When I am fortunate enough to find something like this, I am always quite pleased. Besides helping to maintain the condition of a piece, it gives us a glimpse of the manner in which patriotic Germans purchased such items. Quite rare! $175.00

32-28 PATRIOTIC PIN. This is an interesting square pin that is set-up so the badge is set on a corner instead of a flat space. It has the Cypher of Kaiser Wilhelm II with the Hohenzollern Crown over it. It has a legend that reads "Ein Reich, Ein Volk, Ein Gott," which is a very important, central theme to the people of Imperial Germany. We also see the date 27 January and the dates 1859 and 1915. Thus, this pin would have celebrated the 56th birthday of Kaiser Wilhelm II. It is well-made and in prime condition. $75.00

17-190 MOURNING PATRIOTIC PIN. Patriotic mourning jewelry is a completely different genre from other patriotic jewelry. It represents a female who mourns for the loss of a sweetheart, husband, brother, etc. during the Great War. I do not run across it all that often. It makes for an interesting and touching contrast to the more commonly-seen patriotic jewelry. This particular piece features a high relief rose that is set into a rectangular-shaped base. A clip rather than a pin is attached on the reverse. $50.00

32-14 IRON CROSS-RELATED PATRIOTIC PIN. This patriotic pin is a rather novel and intriguing example. It is a square design, which is then tuned on its edge with one of the four corners pointing downwards. It is suspended from a gilt-toned safety pin. The badge’s case is also gilt-toned, with a very fancy design. The interior of the badge is a two-sided affair. One side represents Hamburg’s city flag. The other side displays an Iron Cross with the initials "MVK" on three of the arms and the date 1881. It appears to be for some kind of group. This is a membership or support pin. It is marvelously done, very colorful, and of course, quite singular. $95.00. . .

17-372 PATRIOTIC PIN. This pin is from a very small niche in patriotic jewelry. It was something done early in the war as Germany conquered territory both on the Western and Eastern Fronts. Belgian coins were fashioned into a pin that a lady could have worn to support the army’s efforts. Perhaps she wore it to honor a relative or loved one serving in the army. Two of the three coins have a small rhinestone in the center, which gives the set some real sparkle. $75.00 .

17-461 PATRIOTIC PHOTO PIN OF A SOLDIER. This is one of the ever-popular patriotic pins that allowed the insertion of a soldier’s photo.
