12-362 NAPOLEONIC SILK PRINT. In recent months I have become far more interested in the Napoleonic Wars of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Napoleon Bonaparte was a magnetic leader who brought France to the brink of global domination during this period. By better understanding this time, it prepares the student of German history for the 19th Century’s last half. That is, the unification of Germany under Kaiser Wilhelm I and Otto von Bismarck. This, in turn, led to the German military buildup that helped contribute to WW I. Returning to the Napoleonic Wars, it is interesting how the victory of Great Britain and her allies solidified her position as the leading military power while European colonies spread throughout the world. Today we offer a novel piece of German art from the period of 1860 to 1890. It is a re-creation of the famous retreat by Napoleon and his army from Russia during a vicious Russian winter of 1814. Napoleon is sitting astride his horse in his classic pose: hand tucked into his tunic. He is at the head of his army as they retreat to Western Europe from Russia. He does no look like a happy camper! The suffering of the French Army as they retreated is nearly unimaginable. Then again, history often repeats itself. The German Army in WW II would suffer the same fate after the two front war was opened in 1941. What makes this piece interesting is its deceiving appearance. At first glance it appears to be a typical lithograph, however nothing could be further from the truth. It is, in fact, made from WOVEN SILK! I find it difficult to imagine the time and effort that went into the design and execution of this piece. I am amazed as I look at it at its attention to detail and its exquisite production quality. The detail to individual soldiers in the retreating columns, to Napoleon, and to the staff who ride behind him is exceptional. The framed depiction measures 17 3/8" x 12." The piece may not be period framed. The artist’s name appears at the bottom of his/her work. This is a wonderful recreation. I am sure it will look as attractive on your wall as it currently looks on mine! $895.00

38-01 FRAMED COLOR LITHOGRAPH - GENERALFELDMARSCHALL PAUL von HINDENBURG. This is a period-framed color lithograph of Generalfeldmarschall Paul von Hindenburg. It is in the style that was displayed in government offices while he was President of the Weimar Republic. He is depicted in a late-war pose. Hindenburg is wearing all of his medals and decorations, including the Pour le Merite with Oak Leaves, the1914 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross, etc. In one hand he grips his interim generalfeldmarschall’s baton, while the other holds a sword with a Garde Star on the grip. The piece is attractively done, and ready to hang on your wall. $375.00

12-374 KRIEGS-DESPESCHEN 1870 & 71. If you are looking for something a bit unusual from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, this is it. This item is laid out as a book, but an unusual one since it has a hollow interior. The exterior is a very fine leather. The front cover bears the title "Kriegs-Despeschen 1870 & 71" with a full-sized 1870 Iron Cross. The faux pages are gilt edged, which is classic high-quality for book pages. A brass snap appears on the book’s side; when it is released, the interior of the "book" is revealed. Inside are four compartments which hold playing card-sized cards. These are reproductions of the official war dispatches that were issued during 1870 to 1871 describing the conduct of the war and the official news. I guess you could call this CNN-of-the-day in a box! These dispatches were released as posters or handbills so the citizens could see how their army was performing in France during this short-lived war. The four compartments hold, I would estimate, approximately 350+ of these various cards. I will photograph just a small sampling of these cards. I have not looked at them all. It will be up to the new owner to discover what treasures lie within. You will have hours of fun with this. I can assure you! $950.00 .

12-591 THREE TELEGRAMS FROM KAISER WILHELM II TO ARTIST FRITZ KRAUS. This is a set of three telegrams that were sent on Kaiser Wilhelm II’s behalf to artist Fritz Kraus. Kraus was a noted sculptor in Germany during the Imperial Period. The telegrams are dated 1904 and 1905. In them the Kaiser requests that Kraus prepare busts for the Naval Academy at Kiel. [The Academy has a superlative collection of German naval artifacts unlike any other in the world. I was very fortunate to visit it within the last few years, since it is difficult to gain admission. If you are ever offered the chance to visit it–GO!] Each of the telegrams measures 8" x 9 3/4." They carry the full markings, stampings, and tax stamps from the German post office that was responsible for maintaining the telegraph system. Two of the three were sent by the Kaiser’s Adjutant General. They are quite interesting. They also show how important, "Rush" messages were sent in Imperial Germany. $95.00

12-588 FRAMED LITHOGRAPH - HUSAREN OFFICER AND HERZOG FRIEDRICH WILHELM. This is a large, colored lithograph mounted in an old frame. The framed presentation measures 18" x 15 3/4." Appearing inside a matted area is the lithograph, which measures 12 1/4" x 10 1/4." The lithograph features two men, one in the uniform of Husaren-Regiment Nr 8. The other is identified as Herzog Friedrich Wilhelm. They are examining a map. The lithograph is from the period 1803 to 1806. Items of this nature from the Napoleonic War period are always quite interesting and popular. It is very handsome, and ready to hang on your wall. $125.00

12-508 TELEGRAM - SURRENDER OF FRENCH - SEDAN - 1870. This is a 1900 recreation of the surrender of the French at Sedan during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. The telegram was originally sent from Sedan by the 3. Armee. As this event was of major importance to patriotic Germans, it was re-created for the public about thirty years after the original event. It comes complete with a telegram and the envelope in which would have been delivered. $115.00

12-493 FRAMED COLOR LITHOGRAPH - KING FRIEDRICH WILHELM III - PRUSSIA. This is a fascinating, framed, color lithograph of King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia. Friedrich Wilhelm III was the King of Prussia during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. He was also the king who instituted the 1813 Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd Class. The lithograph was produced by a Berlin firm. The framed item measures 17 3/4" x 12 3/4." It is possible that this example and the one listed below were used as plates in a book, or perhaps they were produced individually. I estimate that both were produced, then framed around 1900 to 1910. The frames certainly are old, but not so old as to hail from Friedrich Wilhelm III’s time. $195.00

12-494 FRAMED COLOR LITHOGRAPH - KING FRIEDRICH WILHELM IV - PRUSSIA. This is a fascinating, framed, color lithograph of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia. He followed Friedrich Wilhelm III, then was later replaced by Wilhelm I when he suffered mental problems. The lithograph was produced by a Berlin firm. The framed item measures 17 3/4" x 12 3/4." It is possible that this example and the one listed above were used as plates in a book, or perhaps they were produced individually. I estimate that both were produced, then framed around 1900 to 1910. The frames certainly are old, but not so old as to hail from Friedrich Wilhelm IV’s time. $195.00

12-427 FRAMED COLOR LITHOGRAPH - EARLY MOUNTED GARDE du CORPS OFFICER. This is a fascinating color lithograph of a mounted officer from the Regiment der Garde du Corps. It is from the Napoleonic War Period. His headdress is much different from what we are used to with the Regiment der Garde du Corps since this, of course, was prior to the use of pickelhauben. The officer is mounted on a spirited steed and wears his küraß over his tunic. The Garde Star adorns his horse blanket. A küraßier’s sword hangs at his waist. In the picture’s background, the infantry is advancing. The framed presentation measures 8 3/4" x 7 1/4." The image inside the frame measures 12" x 9 ½." It is difficult to say from what period the frame dates, however, my best guess is that it was framed between 1900 and 1930. It reveals honest aging. The lithograph inside the frame may be even older, from the paper’s appearance. A hanger is attached to the reverse. This one is ready to go up on the wall. $125.00

12-566 HAND CARVED WOODEN FRAME - HOHENZOLLERN LAGER IMAGE. Nothing compares to hand-carved items from Germany. Here we have a hand-carved frame that measures 7 3/4" x 11 3/4." Inside the frame are an eagle, laurel and oak leaves, and "Hohenzollern Lager 1917." A colorized image in the frame shows a German officer standing in the gateway to the Lager. It is attractively done. A small chip in the molding does not detract from the overall presentation. $150.00

12-520 FRAMED COLOR LITHOGRAPH - GARDE-INFANTRIE OFFICER -INTERIM UNIFORM CIRCA 1803. This is a framed color lithograph that shows two views of a Garde-Infantrie officer in an Interim uniform. This lithograph is enclosed in a frame that I would date from 1900 to 1910. Its molding is gold. The frame measures 10" x 7." The multicolored lithograph is matted inside the frame, and measures 6" x 4 1/4." A description is on the frame’s reverse. $150.00

12-526 FRAMED PAINTING - KAISER WILHELM I. This is a small painting of Kaiser Wilhelm I. When he came to its throne, Wilhelm I was just the King of Prussia. As a result of the consolidation wars and the victory over France in 1870-1871, he was crowned Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany. The painting measures 6 3/4" x 5 1/8." It is in color, showing Kaiser Wilhelm wearing a Küraßier-Regiment’s frock coat and visor cap. The frame is gold in color. It is an attractive period-piece. $120.00CW

31-62 FRAMED COLLAGE - GERMANY’S THREE EMPERORS. This is a very handsome, period-framed collage of the three German emperors. The images are very high-quality, colorized, "cabinet" photographs. [Cabinet photographs were popular in the latter half of the 19th Century. Measuring approximately 4 ½" by 6 ½," they were similar to Cartes des Viste in general format]. In the center is a large image (measuring 8 1/2" x 5 1/4") of Prinz Wilhelm von Preussen. This was the young, future-Kaiser Wilhelm II. To his left is an image (measuring 6 1/2" x 4 1/4") of his grandfather, Kaiser Wilhelm I. At the photo’s bottom is Wilhelm I’s death date. To the right of Wilhelm II is an image (measuring 6 1/4" x 4 1/8") of his father, Kaiser Friedrich III. Below Friedrich III, is a facsimile of his signature.  It is all housed in a frame that measures 14 3/4" x 19 1/2." It has been tastefully assembled, and looks great on my wall. I will continue to admire it until the new owner claims it! [Extra shipping will be required for this item due to its size]. $295.00

12-527 FRAMED PAINTING - OTTO von BISMARCK. This is a small painting of the "Iron Chancellor," Otto von Bismarck. Von Bismarck was Kaiser Wilhelm I’s chancellor and chief advisor. He advised Wilhelm I on political matters. Regarding day-to-day matters, he ran Prussia first, then Germany later, in concert with the German legislature. Von Bismarck held great power. After Wilhelm I’s death, he became Wilhelm II’s chancellor. This did not last long, as the two disagreed about Germany’s future. Von Bismarck was "retired." The painting, which is in color, measures  6 3/4" x 5 1/8." It has a gold-toned frame. $120.00

12-529 SMALL "GOLD FOR IRON" POSTER. The "Gold for Iron" program was an important patriotic fund. The German people surrendered items made from gold (rings, bracelets, etc.) and received items made from iron, in turn. The proceeds went to help pay for the war effort. As the war progressed, first gold, and later, silver, became very hard-to-find. This small poster measures 5 1/2" X 9." It is colorized, and brings attention to the program. It shows a man putting all kinds of gold items in a large sack. It would make a great part of a display showcasing "Gold for Iron" items. [We have many different items that could be added to such a display]! $55.00

12-507 OFFICER’S SCHREIBMAPPE. This is an Officer’s Schreibmappe from 1904. This was used by an officer as a writing and mapping booklet. Throughout the Schreibmappe are many advertisements that helped underwrite some its production costs. It contains a lot of military and non military information that was useful to an officer on a daily basis. It has such things as prices for mailing letters and packages, and sending telegrams. A section is included with a calendar, and important dates, holidays, etc. for 1904. Another section delineates each of the German states along with their then-current rulers. Following that is a section showing the German Army’s organization in 1904. It shows organization from Armee-Korps to division to brigade, down to regiment. A comprehensive section for the Kaiserliche Marine shows its organization.  This is a wonderful research tool even100 years later. While I cannot cover it all, it even features information on the required and optional articles of uniform, headdress, etc. for officers, as well as information on ranks, and even retirement. This is one handy little book that measures 14 1/4" x 9 1/2." $350.00

12-505 OFFIZIER’S SCHREIB=MAPPE FÜR DAS KRIEGSJAHR 1916. The best way to describe this book is that it is an almanac for an officer in the war year of 1916. It has many sections that would be helpful for an officer serving either in the field or in a staff position. The first section deals month by month and has the days listed, with important dates in German history. Following this is an interesting section that lists the rulers and leading royals of each German Kingdom, Grand Duchy, Duchy, and Principality. Many helpful bits of information are included, such as the capital’s location and the area’s primary religion. The following pages have some of the most useful research material that you can find. This includes the organization of the entire German Army. Did you ever wonder in what Armee-Korps and Division a regiment served? You will find this clearly organized. Armee-Korps, Divisions and even Brigades are listed with their units attached to them. It is great stuff! Twenty-one Armee-Korps are listed along with one Bavarian Armee-Korps. Would you like to know how the Kaiserliche Marine was organized and its various units set-up? All of that is included, as well. Sample panels of how German, Austrian, French, and Russian Infantry and Cavalry Divisions were organized is also offered. Numbers of men in the German Army and Navy can be found, along with the types of jobs they did. Did you know the German Navy had 1,330 men in the Marine-Infantrie and 774 men in the medical division? This is some of the material that you will find throughout this captivating book. The book measures 14 1/4" x 9 ½," and was an important tool for any officer in the Army or Navy. $250.00

12-562 TO THE LAST MAN SPRING 1918 by LYN MACDONALD. This is a wonderful, English-language book that explores the Imperial German Army’s final massive offensive in the spring of 1918. The Germans, British, and French had been hammering at one another for nearly four years. Fresh troops from the USA now were approaching the Western Front. The German High Command realized if Germany wanted to win the war, they needed to break the Allies before the fresh troops arrived to turn the tide. It very nearly happened, but the Allies prevailed in the end. The book recounts the action. It was released in 1999. This illustrated copy is in MINT condition. This is a massive monument which was dedicated in 1913 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Napoleonic wars. This was a major year in German history and there was much going on to honor German’s role in these wars. This monument is every bit as impressive today as it was nearly 100 years ago and Kaiser Wilhelm II and the King of Saxony were both there for its dedication. This image is framed and the frame measures 6 1/8" x 8 1/4". The image measures 3 1/2" x 5". There is a small brass plaque which identifies the image. $25.00

12-521 XES KAISER-JAHRBUCH 1931. This is a consignment item. It is the Kaiser-Jahrbuch for 1931. Of course, by this time Kaiser Wilhelm II had long been exiled in the Netherlands. The book remains an interesting daily calendar for 1931, however. It contains assorted information from the Kaiser’s reign and about the Kaiser’s traditions, along with WW I subject matter and important dates. The forward is by Admiral von Schroder, who led all naval troops in Flanders. It is a wonderful German potpourri of information. $50.00

12-392 TWO-VOLUME SERIES ZEITUNG der 10. ARMEE. Do you have an interest in first-hand accounts of what happened in WW I? Do you have an interest in the developments during the year 1916 from the view of a military newspaper? If so I have something very interesting to share with you. This is a two-volume bound set of newspapers from the German 10th Armee. I do not know if every German Army had its own newspaper. In browsing though the various papers, I find it very well presented (very professional). Of course, it is written from the German point of view and reflects the "party line." As you go through this (even with a German dictionary if you do not read German), you will get a different viewpoint about European events during 1916. Two volumes have the daily papers bound in them, each measuring 17 ½" x 11 1/4" x 1 ½." Volume One begins with March 1916, and Volume Two begins with July 1916. One must use caution in turning the pages as they are getting a bit brittle. This is still quite readable and entertaining. Extra shipping will be required on this item -- these buggers are heavy! $250.00. .

12-523 XES UNSER FRITZ DEUTSCHER KAISER UND KÖNIG VON PREUßEN by HERMANN MÜLLER-BOHN. This is a consignment item. It is a German-language biography of Kaiser Friedrich III of Germany. Friedrich III was Wilhelm I’s son and Wilhelm II’s father. Friedrich III succeeded Wilhelm I as Kaiser in 1888. He died about 100 days later (he was called "The 100 Day Kaiser"). He was replaced by his son, Kaiser Wilhelm II, who reigned as Germany’s final Kaiser until his abdication in November 1918. The book features many fine drawings and photos. It tells the how Friedrich III served as Kronprinz, and a top commander in the Prussian Army during the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian War. His participation in that war helped to end it quickly, for which he was hailed by the Germans. He was also an able and tireless administrator. Had Friedrich lived longer, Germany and History probably would have taken a different path than the one chosen by his son.The binding on the book is loose. $125.00

12-336 ABRECHNUNGS-BUCH. You will have to be a person who enjoys military documents such as militärpaß and soldbuchs to appreciate this, OR somebody who would like a really old document. What we have is an abrechnungs-buch, which is a pay book. This is for a man by the name of Hermann Feshe, who served in an artillery brigade in the Prussian Army. You ask how early this book is? How about 1829-1831!?! I have spent a half hour pouring through this book. I really find it interesting seeing how later German military documents incorporated this information into those documents. The ink entries are clear. It is amazing to hold in one’s hand a document that is more than 170 years old, and which was created barely a decade after the great Napoleonic wars. $125.00

12-389 MATTED PAGE FROM ORDEN DER AUSSERDEUTSCHE STAATEN EUROPAS PLATE Nr 2. Prior to the beginning of WW I, a series of high quality pamphlets were printed in Germany displaying the orders and decorations of Imperial Germany and Europe. Many variations of these were produced, and I have offered several of them in the past. When I mentioned that these were high-quality, I failed to mention that they were in FULL COLOR. The example we are offering today describes in crystal clear detail many of the top awards from the various nations of Europe (some were allied to Germany in WW I and some were bitter enemies). It covers examples from Great Britain, France, Greece, Spain. etc. This has been matted and is ready for display or framing. The matte measures 17 3/8" x 13 ½," while the image within measures 11" x 8 5/8." $95.00. . .

12-373 TWO CREPE PAPER DESIGNS OF THE HOHENZOLLERN EAGLE AND GERMAN NATIONAL FLAG. When I first came across these I thought they were paper napkins. Having said that, it made no sense. Napkins during the Imperial Period were always made of linen! Then I looked closer and saw that they were not made of ordinary paper but crepe paper, instead. We have two of them, featuring a design with the Hohenzollern Eagle and the German National flag (in color). They measure 7 3/4" x 7 3/8." Let your imagination run wild on how you want to use these in your collection. $25.00 . . .
