New items on Bala's Bargain Bin, our sister clearance page,
effective  23 July 2008!!

Kyri is one of the four Siberian cats that we have here at Der Rittmeister Militaria (along with a female Maine Coon cat and two male Ragdolls ). She is also our youngest female. She shadows Bala all over the house, as do younger sisters everywhere. When she realized that Bala had her own page on this web site, her eyes grew even greener with envy. After we endured much pouting, we agreed that she could have her own page.

Thus, "Kyri's Kurio Korner" was born.

Here you will find smaller items befitting a smaller cat. While Kyri may be small, she is a dynamo of action. Sometimes she trots around here so quickly , we feel certain there must be THREE of her!

As you can see, Kyri can wear a tiara just as prettily as her bigger sister. So, please join Princess Kyri as she hunts down tasty, little bargains for you.

A special note on items listed on this page. When you have selected an item from "Kyri's Kurio Korner" , we ask for your help in the following manner: Please tell us that the item you want appears on this page. This will help us ensure that you receive YOUR discount. While listed here the item is also listed on its regular merchandise page and at its pre-sale price. We often forget what we have on sale (especially now that we have two clearance pages), and out of habit go to the appropriate page to find the item, then quote the regular price. If we have placed an item on sale here, we truly want you to have it at that price. So, please bear with us on this. Help us help YOU get the discount you deserve!

01-569 CUTOUT BLACK ARMY WOUND BADGE. This is a privately-purchased, cutout Black Army Wound Badge. We see these far less frequently than we do the non cutout, issued examples. These were favored by officers. It would make a fine addition to a tunic or a Wound Badge collection. The paint on this example rates at about 90%. Paint is missing on the helmet, which is the badge’s high point. $85.00   Reduced to $70.00!!

01-460 FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR PATRIOTIC PIN FOR A VETERAN WHO MOVED TO THE USA. Veteran pieces from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871 are much more difficult to find than those from WW I. The number of men who served during the earlier conflict was much smaller. To add to the exclusivity, this is a veteran’s badge for a man who had served in 1870/71, and then moved to the USA! This badge has a bar at the top that says "Souvenir." Below that is a tricolored ribbon in Germany’s national colors (black, white, and red). The ribbon reads, "15. Sundes Kriegerfest Akron, O. August 18-23 1900." That tells us the badge celebrates the 15th annual Akron, Ohio meeting of veterans, who began meeting in 1885. Below that, attached to the ribbon, is a circular device containing an 1870 Iron Cross. Inside the button we see the badge was manufactured by a firm in Newark, NJ. During this time period, similar badges were very popular with USA Civil War veterans. Many groups from the North and South were still having reunions. The Franco-Prussian War happened only five years after our Civil War (indeed, the Prussians had observers here during the war)! I was delighted to locate this item. $175.00 Reduced to $150.00!!

14-288 AVIATION-RELATED CIGARETTE BOX. This is a metal box measuring 3 1/4" x 5" x 1 1/4." At first glance one would think this box is made of a burled wood. In fact, it has been painted to give it just such an appearance. It is actually metal! Mounted on the lid is the propeller of an airplane. Some leaves are intertwined between the blades of the propeller and the center hub. This device is silver-toned. It looks most handsome affixed to the top of the box. Inside, the box is lined with cedar, which would have been ideal for protecting the freshness of tobacco products. Thus, this box probably was intended to hold cigarettes on the desk of an aviator. I cannot tell if this is wartime production or postwar. It is interesting and reasonably priced. $125.00. . . Reduced to $105.00!!

11-421 NAVY OBSERVER’S BADGE - PRINZENGROßE SIZE. This is a fascinating badge for a Navy Observer. It has two features that make it interesting. First it is prinzengroße-sized. This is very unusual! The badge boasts a fine swollen pin. The badge measures 1 3/4" x 1." It is an unusual variation. $395.00 Reduced to $345.00!!

14-334 PRUSSIAN ARMY PILOT’S BADGE RING. This is one of the ever popular Prussian Army Pilot Badge rings. It has a miniature of the Prussian Army Pilot Badge. The detail to the center of the badge is still legible. The band is slightly misshapen and there is a small crimp to one portion of the band. This rings were generally made from .800 silver as I expect this one was but over time and the taking on and off of the ring that hallmarking is no longer present. The ring is a size 7. Ribbons also appear for the Hindenburg Cross and the Friedrich Medal from Saxony. Attached to the front of the ribbons is an enamel Iron Cross 1st Class device. Some chipping shows on the enamel surface. A high-grade Gold Army Wound Badge miniature is also present. It is for a sporting competition named in honor of the "Battle of Skagerrak." The document is made out to a Fähnrich zur See Lell. He was the victor in a 5 x 100 meter relay. 13-450 NAVY VETERAN’S BADGE. This is an interesting Navy veteran’s badge, done in an oversized, gathered-ribbon design. In fact, it sports two layers of gathered ribbon. The latter is blue and white. The badge measures 2" in diameter. In the center of the ribbon is a silvered anchor with a flag attached. On the flag it reads "Schiffer-Brüderschaft Werben-Elbe." On the reverse, it is stamped for a firm in Hamburg. This may well be a civil piece as opposed to a military. It sure is dandy-looking. $125.00 Reduced to $110.00!!

05-1193 FRANCO PRUSSIAN WAR 1870-1871 COMBATANT’S MEDAL. This is the Combatant’s Decoration for the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. It is not an originally-awarded example. The original issues were produced from melted-down French cannons, just as they were with the Napoleonic War awards of 1813-1815. The issued pieces are easily distinguished from non issued examples by the engraving on their edges. Non issued 1870-1871 pieces were often replacements for originals (lost, etc.). 12-591 THREE TELEGRAMS FROM KAISER WILHELM II TO ARTIST FRITZ KRAUS. This is a set of three telegrams that were sent on Kaiser Wilhelm II’s behalf to artist Fritz Kraus. Kraus was a noted sculptor in Germany during the Imperial Period. The telegrams are dated 1904 and 1905. In them the Kaiser requests that Kraus prepare busts for the Naval Academy at Kiel. [The Academy has a superlative collection of German naval artifacts unlike any other in the world. I was very fortunate to visit it within the last few years, since it is difficult to gain admission. If you are ever offered the chance to visit it–GO!] Each of the telegrams measures 8" x 9 3/4." They carry the full markings, stampings, and tax stamps from the German post office that was responsible for maintaining the telegraph system. Two of the three were sent by the Kaiser’s Adjutant General. They are quite interesting. They also show how important, "Rush" messages were sent in Imperial Germany. $95.00  Reduced to $80.00!!

12-588 FRAMED LITHOGRAPH - HUSAREN OFFICER AND HERZOG FRIEDRICH WILHELM. This is a large, colored lithograph mounted in an old frame. The framed presentation measures 18" x 15 3/4." Appearing inside a matted area is the lithograph, which measures 12 1/4" x 10 1/4." The lithograph features two men, one in the uniform of Husaren-Regiment Nr 8. The other is identified as Herzog Friedrich Wilhelm. They are examining a map. The lithograph is from the period 1803 to 1806. Items of this nature from the Napoleonic War period are always quite interesting and popular. It is very handsome, and ready to hang on your wall. $125.00 Reduced to $110.00!!

12-427 FRAMED COLOR LITHOGRAPH - EARLY MOUNTED GARDE du CORPS OFFICER. This is a fascinating color lithograph of a mounted officer from the Regiment der Garde du Corps. It is from the Napoleonic War Period. His headdress is much different from what we are used to with the Regiment der Garde du Corps since this, of course, was prior to the use of pickelhauben. The officer is mounted on a spirited steed and wears his küraß over his tunic. The Garde Star adorns his horse blanket. A küraßier’s sword hangs at his waist. In the picture’s background, the infantry is advancing. The framed presentation measures 8 3/4" x 7 1/4." The image inside the frame measures 12" x 9 ½." It is difficult to say from what period the frame dates, however, my best guess is that it was framed between 1900 and 1930. It reveals honest aging. The lithograph inside the frame may be even older, from the paper’s appearance. A hanger is attached to the reverse. This one is ready to go up on the wall. $125.00 Reduced to $110.00!!

19-129 KAISER FRIEDRICH III (1831-1888)- SIGNATURE - PRUSSIA. Friedrich III was Germany’s second Kaiser. He succeeded his father, Wilhelm I, who died in 1888. Sadly, Friedrich III, Kaiser Wilhelm II’s father, sat on the throne for just three months. In Germany he is often referred to as the "100 Day Kaiser." During 1888, Germany had three kaisers in little more than three months! Friedrich III was an able military commander who played an important role in Germany’s victory in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. This appears to be a large envelope which has been unfolded. It measures 15 1/4" x 11." It is addressed to a Major Goltz. In the lower left corner Friedrich III’s bold and distinctive signature appears in black ink. $195.00  Reduced to $170.00!!

23-204 PAIR OF SHOULDER BOARDS FOR A MAJOR - GRENADIER-REGIMENT Nr 5 - PRUSSIA. This is a very high caliber pair of major’s shoulder boards from Grenadier-Regiment König Friedrich I (4. Ostpreußisches) Nr 7. The regiment was founded in 1689. It was garrisoned at Danzig, where it was assigned to the XVII. Armeekorps. The rope design on the obverse indicates it is for a major (it is far different from the design used by leutnants, oberleutnants, and hauptmanns). This rank was either a commander of one of the regiment’s three battalions, or he was on the regimental staff. If single or double pips were added, the shoulder boards could be used by an oberstleutnant or an oberst, respectively. The regiment’s crowned royal cypher is featured on the board’s face. Their reverse reveals that these were once slip-on shoulder boards. The slip-on attachments are no longer present. The boards cannot be attached to a tunic in their present state. Their backing is yellow felt. It extends a bit, so that one can see the yellow trim as one looks at them from the obverse. They are great pair of shoulder boards for display, from a man who either commanded a battalion in the regiment, or was on the regimental staff. $425.00  Reduced to $375.00!!

27-26 THREE TABLE MEDALS COMMEMORATING 1923 GERMAN REICHSMARK CRASH - ORIGINAL PRESENTATION CASE. In 1923, some five years after the end of WW I, the economy of Germany struggled not only to recover from the devastating effects of the war itself, but to pay the War Reparations required by the Treaty of Versailles. With all of this came the massive devaluation of the German Mark. I remember as a young child being amazed in reading history books that the Mark was worth so little that it often took a wheel barrow full of them to buy a loaf of bread. The printing presses literally spewed larger denominations until bills were valued in the BILLIONS of Marks.  We offer here an interesting set of three table medals. Each of the table medals is brass-toned and measures 1 1/4" in diameter. The reverse of the three medals charts the price of simple items in Germany. On 1 November 1923 a pound (Pfund) of bread cost 3,000,000 Marks. By 15 November 1923 that same loaf was 80,000,000 Marks. By December 1923 that loaf cost 260,000,000 Marks. Another example was a pound of meat. 1 November 1923 36,000,000 Marks, 15 November 1923 900,000,000 Marks, and December 1923 3,200,000,000 Marks! The three table medals are housed in a case that measures 2 1/4" x 5 1/2." It is in very fine condition. $150.00 Reduced to $125.00!!

27-22 CASED TABLE MEDAL "FOR THE IRON TIME". This is a well-made, attractive table medal that commemorates "The Iron Time." On the obverse, along with the mention of "The Iron Time," it is dated 1916. On the reverse mention is made of "Gold For Iron." This was a popular program where patriotic citizens surrendered gold jewelry and items in exchange for other items made of iron. The table medal measures 1 ½" in diameter. It comes in a fitted, black-leatherette presentation case. I have had these table medals in the past, but never in the case. $95.00Reduced to $85.00!!CB

The obverse makes reference to "The Iron Time" along with the date 1916. The reverse mentions "Gold for Iron." $65.00  Reduced to $55.00!!

15-414 UNIFORM SNAP BUTTONS ON THE ORIGINAL SALES CARD. During the Imperial German period buttons, hooks and eyes, and snap buttons were an important part of the securing of uniforms. Zippers were not yet in use for trousers and so items like this were commonly used for securing garments. There are six of these snap buttons on the original sales card. These would date from about 1900-1910 and even if you don’t actually need them to secure a uniform they make for a fine addition to a display showing how these items were sold and used. $35.00 Reduced to $25.00!!

15-421 ENLISTED MAN/NCO’S FELDGRAU BELT BUCKLE - PRUSSIA. This is an enlisted man/NCO’s wartime production belt buckle from Prussia. At this point in the war, belt buckles were no longer made of brass. A subdued finish such as this made more sense at the front. The buckle would be great for a display of wartime artifacts. $75.00Reduced to $65.00!!

21-146 TABLE MEDAL - GRAF ZEPPELIN. This is an interesting early table medal for the Graf Zeppelin. The table medal is gilt-colored and measures 1" in diameter. The obverse features the Graf Zeppelin in profile, along with the date 1928 and "Graf Zeppelin." On the reverse we see something most interesting, the symbol for Shell Oil Co. Within the shell we also see the word "Shell." I would expect that this is some kind of sponsorship deal that the Zeppelin Company had with Shell Oil. $60.00   Reduced to $50.00!!

21-77 ZEPPELIN ECKENER SPENDE PIN. Hugo Eckener was the guiding light of the Zeppelin company during and after WW I. Besides being a first-rate engineer, he was a marketeer and PR man supreme. He negotiated to present a zeppelin to the U.S. as a part of Germany’s reparations. This zeppelin became the U.S.S. Los Angeles. In the midst of all of this, and the battle to keep the firm solvent in postwar Germany, Eckener managed to maintain the interest of the German public just as had Ferdinand von Zeppelin. Like von Zeppelin, Eckener went to the German public for financial assistance to continue his work. The German public, in spite of their own post WW I misfortune, responded by offering donations to keep the company afloat. This pin was a part of that program. The people responded to "Zeppelin Eckener Spende" just as they had for Aviation Spendes, U-boat Spendes, "Gold for Iron", etc. Causes such as these were always hugely popular. In appreciation of their support, the supporters were given pins, medals, etc. This pin is made of silk and is oval-shaped. It features the name of the cause and a zeppelin in flight. All of this was woven in four colors. This particular pin is in MINT condition. $95.00. . Reduced to $80.00!!
