New items on Bala's Bargain Bin, our sister clearance page,
effective  19 July 2009!!

We have an office in Germany 0049 (0)4104-962028!!

Kyri is one of the four Siberian cats that we have here at Der Rittmeister Militaria (along with a female Maine Coon cat and two male Ragdolls ). She is also our youngest female. She shadows Bala all over the house, as do younger sisters everywhere. When she realized that Bala had her own page on this web site, her eyes grew even greener with envy. After we endured much pouting, we agreed that she could have her own page.

Thus, "Kyri's Kurio Korner" was born.

Here you will find smaller items befitting a smaller cat. While Kyri may be small, she is a dynamo of action. Sometimes she trots around here so quickly , we feel certain there must be THREE of her!

As you can see, Kyri can wear a tiara just as prettily as her bigger sister. So, please join Princess Kyri as she hunts down tasty, little bargains for you.

A special note on items listed on this page. When you have selected an item from "Kyri's Kurio Korner" , we ask for your help in the following manner: Please tell us that the item you want appears on this page. This will help us ensure that you receive YOUR discount. While listed here the item is also listed on its regular merchandise page and at its pre-sale price. We often forget what we have on sale (especially now that we have two clearance pages), and out of habit go to the appropriate page to find the item, then quote the regular price. If we have placed an item on sale here, we truly want you to have it at that price. So, please bear with us on this. Help us help YOU get the discount you deserve!

01-624 FOUR-PIECE SCREWBACK BLACK ARMY WOUND BADGE. This is a high-quality four-piece screwback Black Army Wound Badge. The Wound Badge is in very fine condition, with excellent black paint. The reverse sports a large backing plate that is larger than the Wound Badge. It measures 2" in diameter. The backing plate features two screws on posts that secure the wound badge to the backing plate. I have not been able to undo the two screws. Perhaps a patient, attentive new owner will be able to do so. This is a very handsome example. Screwback wound badges are NOT commonly seen. $250.00 Reduced to $220.00!!

01-569 CUTOUT BLACK ARMY WOUND BADGE. This is a privately-purchased, cutout Black Army Wound Badge. We see these far less frequently than we do the non cutout, issued examples. These were favored by officers. It would make a fine addition to a tunic or a Wound Badge collection. The paint on this example rates at about 90%. Paint is missing on the helmet, which is the badge’s high point. $85.00    Reduced to $75.00!!

01-603 COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL - KAISER FRIEDRICH III. Friedrich III was Germany’s second Kaiser. He was Wilhelm II’s father and Wilhelm I’s son. His reign was brief, as he died soon after ascending the throne. He is often referred to as the "100 Day Kaiser." He was an able administrator. In the Wars of 1864 and 1866, and the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War, he proved himself a top-flight military commander. Today we are offering a commemorative medal for Kaiser Friedrich III. The medal is silver-toned. It measures 1" in diameter. The obverse features his profile. The reverse lists his birth (18 October 1831) and death (15 June 1888) dates. 14-288 AVIATION-RELATED CIGARETTE BOX. This is a metal box measuring 3 1/4" x 5" x 1 1/4." At first glance one would think this box is made of a burled wood. In fact, it has been painted to give it just such an appearance. It is actually metal! Mounted on the lid is the propeller of an airplane. Some leaves are intertwined between the blades of the propeller and the center hub. This device is silver-toned. It looks most handsome affixed to the top of the box. Inside, the box is lined with cedar, which would have been ideal for protecting the freshness of tobacco products. Thus, this box probably was intended to hold cigarettes on the desk of an aviator. I cannot tell if this is wartime production or postwar. It is interesting and reasonably priced. $125.00. Reduced to $110.00!!

03-70 CIGARETTE TIN. In Imperial Germany, most cigarettes came in tin boxes of varying sizes. The manufacturers produced these tins in ranges from 20 to 25 to 50 or 100 cigarettes. Many different types of cigarettes were advertised in a multitude of ways. Also, it was common to be given cigarette cards with one’s purchase. These could be for a variety of subjects, like orders and decorations, uniforms, etc. This box, which measures 3" x 2 3/4" holds twenty cigarettes. It is for the brand "The Duke of Edinbourgh Flaggengala," which was manufactured by the firm Garbaty in Berlin-Pankow. It is in very fine condition. $80.00    Reduced to $70.00!!

18-270 BOX OF MATCHES - VÖLKERSCHLACHTDENKMAL. The Völkerschlachtdenkmal is (and has been) one of the most important war memorials in Germany. It is located in Leipzig, which is one of the most important cities in Saxony, along with Dresden (the capital city). Leipzig was deep in East German territory until the early 1990's, when East and West Germany were reunified. I have seen this memorial in Leipzig, and I can tell you that it is truly beautiful. It has a reflecting pool leading up to it, similar to the reflecting pool for Washington’s Monument in the US capital. The Völkerschlachtdenkmal was dedicated in 1913 to commemorate Germany’s participation 100 years previously in the Napoleonic Wars. This is a box of matches, measuring 3" x 4" x 1 ½." It has a likeness of the monument on the boxtop. The monument, along with the trees, shrubs, and reflecting pool can be seen. When opening the box, we can see two sections of pink tipped matches. The two compartments seem full. On the sides where one strikes matches, I see that perhaps two or three matches have been struck. Mint. $45.00 Reduced to $40.00!!

18-215 BIG BERTHA PATRIOTIC FIGURINE OR BUD VASE. This is an unusual patriotic figurine that could have been displayed alone or possibly even used as a bud vase. It is made of porcelain and represents the huge, powerful cannon "Big Bertha." While the Germans had larger cannons in their arsenal, Big Bertha really captured the public’s imagination. I believe the gun received its name from the head of Krupp Werke naming it for a daughter or granddaughter. The figurine measures 6 3/8" in height. It shows the gun at an angle of 45 degrees, ready to fire. On the barrel in gold is noted "Die Dicke Bertha aus Essen Hasweitte 42". Attractively made and in very fine condition, it would make a most unusual addition to any collection. $175.00 Reduced to $155.00!!

24-121 HAND PAINTED SET - SOLDIERS - NAPOLEONIC WARS. Over the years, we have strived to bring you both the common and the uncommon. Today we think we have something that is certainly the latter! Today we are offering a set of hand painted miniature soldiers. They were probably produced during the 1890 to 1910-period. They represent the German Army’s pride and the glory from the Napoleonic Wars. I believe each soldier is made of lead, which was most common prior to the inexpensive production of rubber and plastic. (The best "collectible toy soldiers" are still made of lead or other pliable metals). They were then hand painted in great detail. The average soldier stands about 2" tall. We have a large number of these figures. We will be happy to sell multiple groups at a discount. I have arranged these into groups that are slightly different. When possible, I have built them around the regimental colors. Below is what is included in a group:

*One (1) officer bearing the regimental colors, flanked by another officer who wearing a sword and a mitre (a special headdress from the period).

*Two (2) sergeants carrying the spontoons that protected the regimental colors. [A spontoon was an evolutionary development of the halbred (a combination of a spear and a battleaxe), as was the partisan]. The regimental colors had to be protected at all costs, as their loss was a disgrace to the entire regiment. To that end, the spontoon was a nasty-looking pike that could eviscerate any who dared to take the regimental colors.

*One (1) mounted officer.

*One drummer wearing a mitre.

*Eight (8) infantry soldiers carrying a musket and wearing mitres.

This wonderful mini grouping has a total of FOURTEEN men. It gives you an idea what soldiers looked like two-hundred-years ago. They probably were owned by a young boy, or perhaps a collector like you! $250.00 Reduced to $215.00!!

10-673 PAIR OF ENLISTED MAN MILITÄRPAßES - JÄGER-BATTALION Nr 14 - MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN. This is a really interesting pair of enlisted man’s militärpaßes from Jäger-Battalion Nr 14 from the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. These units were the German Army’s crack marksmen. Of course, the German army had good shots scattered throughout the various regiments. To be in a Jäger-Battalion, however, one had to be among the best of the best. Three such units were formed in the Prussian Army during 1744. By the time the Napoleonic Wars began, the number of these battalions had greatly increased. A total of fifteen Jäger-Battalions was in the German Army. All were Prussian except for two from Saxony, one from Schaumburg-Lippe, and one from Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Jäger-Battalion Nr 14 was formed in 1821. It was based in Colmar i. E. and assigned to the XV. Armeekorps. The man to whom these belonged was named Fritz Hacker. He was born 31 August 1891. He joined the Battalion in October 1911, at the age of twenty. He served in Kompagnie Nr 2. He completed his two-years’ compulsory service in September 1913. He was recalled to the army in 1914. I see evidence of service from 1914 through 1916. This information is included in the first militärpaß. The second militärpaß is quite interesting, and shows more of his service in Jäger-Battalion Nr 14 during WW I. It reveals he was awarded the 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class and the War Service Cross 2nd Class from Mecklenburg-Schwerin. He was also awarded a wound badge in October 1918, barely a month before the war’s end. Many notations in the militärpaß reflect on his service and battles during WW I. He remained in the army after WW I, serving in the Reichswehr until at least 1920. Both passes are fascinating and detailed. $150.00 Reduced to $130.00!!

10-728 ENLISTED MAN’S MILITÄRPAß - INFANTERIE-REGIMENT Nr 42 - PRUSSIA. This is a militärpaß for a Wilhelm Meyer, who served in Infanterie-Regiment Nr 42. He was born in 1879. He first entered the army in this regiment during 1898. Later additions to his militärpaß in the years before WW I show he was enrolled in other reserve units. He served throughout WW I. He mustered out of the army in 1919 as a forty-year-old. Along with his militärpaß’s many attachments, we also see a "good performance" certificate in 1900, when he had completed his two years of mandatory service. $50.00 Reduced to $45.00!!

13-600 MILITÄRPAß - IMPERIAL GERMAN NAVY. This is an enlisted man’s militärpaß from the Navy. The man’s name was Emil Kurt Böttcher. He was born on 19 November 1890. He entered the Navy on 2 November 1910. He was mustered in and served in 5. Kompagnie IV. Matrosen Artillerie Abteilung. It appears that he completed his compulsory service in 1913. He was, however, recalled into the Navy. Many entries appear in the book that show service through all of WW I. It appears that he was mustered out of the Navy in late November 1918. Navy militärpaßes are far scarcer than army ones, because far fewer men served in the Navy. This book is in excellent condition. It can be a source of excellent research. $75.00 Reduced to $65.00!!

10-675 SOLDIER’S RING - FÜSILIER-REGIMENT Nr 36 - PRUSSIA. This is a ring for a soldier who served in Füsilier-Regiment Generalfeldmarschall Graf Blumenthal (Magdeburgisches) Nr 36. This regiment was founded in 1815. The ring has a shoulder strap in the center which has light blue enamel and the regiment number in red in the center of the strap. To the left and right of the strap there is an intricate setting of leaves and I also see a sword. (Melissa, please look at this item and the description and see if you can punch it up). On the band which is on either side of the strap we see 1914 and 1917, the years that this soldier had served to date in this regiment. So this is most likely a war time ring unless he was wounded and invalided out of the army. This ring is very attractive and is a size 10. $95.00 Reduced to $80.00!!

10-604 1916 KRIEGS-SOAP IN CONTAINER. We are pleased to bring you yet another unusual patriotic item. It is a bar of Kriegs-soap. I imagine it was used at the Front by soldiers taking a quick bath or shave from their helmets, or by the patriotic Germans back home. The bar measures 1 1/2" x 2 1/2." It is unused, as the imprint of the manufacturer, "Kriegs-Seife 1916 F. Wolff & Sohn," is still extant. The soap bar rests in a plastic box half that I do not believe is original to the soap. This is an interesting and unusual item. $75.00  Reduced to $65.00!!

14-317 AVIATION DONATION BADGE. During the Imperial German Period, the German people were very supportive of aviation efforts. Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin turned to the German people for financial support when one of his zeppelins crashed and was destroyed. Zeppelin Spende Tags were quite popular in Germany, and large amounts of money were raised. The same thing was done to help raise money for airplanes.  Today we offer a different variation of an aviation donation medal. The example is made of zinc. It shows an early, two-winged aircraft. The medal measures 1 1/2" in diameter. Attached to the medal is a ribbon with three rows of black, and two of white. On the back of the ribbon a small eyelet is sewn in to allow it to hang from a garment. It is an intriguing variation. $75.00  Reduced to $65.00!!

14-109 SOLDBUCH AND MILITARPAß TO AN AVIATION SOLDIER. This Soldbuch and Militarpaß belonged to the same soldier. His last name is Wossner. As we look through his Militarpaß, we see that he was born in 1896 and that he was a native of Württemberg. We can tell that he passed through the 3rd Recruit Depot with Infantry Regiment Nr 125 in October 1915. He was immediately reassigned to Flieger-Ersatz-Abteilung Nr 10 near Stuttgart. Entries continue from his November reassignment through December 1916 with him attached to Flugpark 5 (a training depot and point of distribution of aviation personnel to front line squadrons.). We then see notations for Flieger-Abteilung (A) Nr 211 which is dated 21 November 1918 so he obviously survived the war. There are also unit stampings for FA 201 and 210 from the period of 1917-1918. In his Soldbuch we see entries for FA 202, 207, and210 along with his service in these units. A well traveled ground crewman by any means. It is unusual to be able to offer both the Militarpaß and the Soldbuch together. $150.00  Reduced to $130.00!!

18-267 DINNER SIZED-PLATE - VÖLKERSCHLACHTDENKMAL. We are offering today a dinner-sized plate, measuring 10 ½" in diameter. The monument is painted in full color, along with the surrounding trees, shrubs, and the reflecting pool that leads from the street. One tiny chip shows on the plate’s obverse. It is about the size of a pencil tip. On the reverse is a string that allows it to be hung from the wall, as was the custom of the period for such items. $95.00  Reduced to $80.00!!

Each fork handle boasts an engraved Hohenzollern Crown. The manufacturer, Gebrüder Hepp, is noted on the reverse. The third fork is much smaller. It is more suitable for an appetizer or a salad, perhaps. It also has four tines and measures 5 3/4" x 3/4." It has the Hohenzollern Eagle on the handle as well. 34-39 PATRIOTIC SKILLET. Sometimes I think I have seen every imaginable Imperial German patriotic piece that was ever produced! Well, this time I have a piece I find both interesting and unusual. It is a patriotic skillet. Just as German citizens turned their gold for iron, German housewives donated their copper pans and in turn, received iron skillets! Around the skillet’s edges, an engraving proudly proclaims this fact. It also mentions that it was done in 1916. On the handle, the housewife is depicted shaking hands with a soldier. The skillet measures 103/4" in diameter, while the handle measures 10." $225.00  Reduced to $195.00!!

12-387 WOODEN FORM FOR DRYING AND TRANSPORTING CIGARS. This fascinating piece measures 24" x 4" x 2 ½." The divided wooden form was originally meant for the drying and storage of cigars. It has been fire-stamped on the outside with the name Schimmelpenninck (these were Dutch cigars), and the word "Holland," among others. The form breaks into two parts, each side having twenty 4 1/4" long, bullet-shaped spaces designed for the cigars. The cigar-spaces vary from a little less than one-half inch to a little more than three-quarters of an inch in width. One side has spaces almost three-quarters of an inch in depth, the other about three-eighths. The halves are joined together by a trio of pegs and holes at the ends. An eyelet screw has been put into one end of half so that it can be hung on the wall if desired. This is another piece that can be converted into a display case for smaller objets d’art or displayed whole as one itself. 34-63 CROCHETED/EMBROIDERED HOT PAD COMMEMORATING 500 YEARS OF GERMANY (1415-1915). This is an interesting crocheted piece celebrating the 500th anniversary of some event in Germany (1415-1915). I am not sure exactly what event it commemorates. It is designed to protect one’s hand when removing a hot dish from the oven, then serve as a hot pad to protect the table surface from the hot dish while it is being served. The piece measures 15 3/4" x 9" when opened up completely.  A Hohenzollern Eagle is beautifully embroidered in the center of the outside flap, with the dates 1415 in the upper left corner and 1915 in the lower right. Lace decorates three sides of the flap. Underneath is the pocket into which one's hand is placed to grasp the hot dish. It is both a practical and beautiful item, in excellent shape for its age. 29-44 FOUR RIBBON BOUTONNIERE - ATTACHED IRON CROSS AND GOLD WOUND BADGE. Boutonnieres were quite popular among veterans so that they might display their Great War decorations. Ribbons also appear for the Hindenburg Cross and the Friedrich Medal from Saxony. Attached to the front of the ribbons is an enamel Iron Cross 1st Class device. Some chipping shows on the enamel surface. A high-grade Gold Army Wound Badge miniature is also present. 13-465 NAVY EDITION OF "WELTKRIEG! KRIEGS UND RUHMESBLÄTTER" Nr 48 FROM 1915. This is a mini magazine that was published in 1915. It has only four pages, with photos on all four pages. These salute a number of naval heroes and ships. On the cover is Großadmiral Alfred von Tirpitz, who was the State Minister of the Kaiserliche Marine. In American terms, this would have made him the Secretary of the Navy. While not an active fleet admiral, von Tirpitz was the architect of the modern German Navy, and wielded tremendous power. The second page shows three vessels. First is the S. M. S. Eitel Friedrich, which visited Newport News, VA in 1915. Below that is the S. M. S. Kronprinz Wilhelm, which also visited Newport News that year. The final ship on that page is the S. M. S. Königsberg, which was involved in one of the most amazing stories in German East Africa during the early war years. Page three shows Torpedoboots and U-Boats in action. Page four shows the U-9 and her commander, Kapitänleutnant Otto Weddigen. Weddigen was Germany’s first U-Boat/ Navy hero. In the early days of WW I he sank three English Cruisers in a single afternoon. This is a lovely photographic history of the German Navy during the period of 1914/1915. $75.00  Reduced to $65.00!!

13-638 CHEVRON - ONE-YEAR-VOLUNTEER - KAISERLICHE MARINE. This is a One-Year-Volunteer’s arm chevron from the Kaiserliche Marine. As we have chronicled elsewhere, the One-Year-Volunteer (OYV) entered the German military service on a different program from the men doing two-year mandatory service. After most men completed their two-year service, they entered the reserves. They only were called to active service when additional man power was needed. This was the situation, of course, when WW I began. Most reserves were called back to active duty. Returning to the OYV, when entering the military, they essentially paid all of their own expenses. That is, the government did not pay for their equipment (uniforms, headgear, etc.). They were expected to supply their own gear, just as officers did. Since these men provided their own gear, they were allowed a certain amount of latitude in their uniforms and headgear. Men who enlisted in the OYV program were generally from the German middle class or higher. They had more money to spend on their uniforms than say farmers who came into the service. Many OYV’s bought their uniforms and headdress from the same purveyors that the officers did. They were allowed to mimic many officers’ headdress characteristics. For example, they were not allowed to purchase a pickelhaube EXACTLY like an officer’s, but they could get VERY close. At least ONE of the details had to be different from an officer’s. It is common to see a silk liner and officer’s leather liner on an OYV’s pickelhaube. This was one of the extra allowances that OYV’s were allowed to make. They also were allowed to wear a special trim on their shoulder straps that clearly indicated they were an OYV, not a normal enlistee, or even an NCO. I cannot state with authority that Navy OYV’s wore the trim on their shoulder straps. This device, however, serves the same purpose. It was worn on the sleeve. It is "V-shaped." Each arm of the "V" measures 3 1/2." Woven into the patch is a design of red, black, and white. This is the first time that I have run across one. $150.00  Reduced to $130.00!!

13-624 NAVY MATROSEN-REGIMENT PATRIOTIC TRENCH ART PIN - ORIGINAL PURCHASE CARD AND PRESENTATION BOX. During WW I, patriotic trench art pins were quite popular. Many of them used driving bands from expended artillery shells. This is a particularly interesting example as it is for a man who served in Navy 2. Matrosen-Regiment during the period of 1914 through1916 as a part of the Marine-Infanterie forces. The gold-toned pin measures 1 1/2." In the pin’s center is a small enamel 1914 Iron Cross with flanking oak leaves and acorns. Atop the pin is a silver-toned bandeau which reads "1914 2. Matrosen-Regiment 1916." The pin is mounted on the original purchase card, which measures 1 1/2" x 2 1/2." The final piece to the ensemble is a cardboard box measuring 1 3/4" x 2 3/4." It holds the entire arrangement. Naval trench art pieces like this are very rare. In my years of collecting I can count the number of Navy pieces on the fingers of one hand, and perhaps have a finger or two left over! $225.00   Reduced to $195.00!!

13-331 NAVY COFFEE POT WARMER. When I tell you readers that I seek out the "unusual", I need go no further in explaining this piece! This is a quilted coffee pot warmer, saluting the battleship Schlesien. [I was doing some reading on this vessel today. I was amazed to find that it survived WW I and was actually used by the Kriegsmarine during WW II. It was scuttled in May 1945, near the end of the war.] This piece would wrap around a coffee pot, and help keep the contents warm. It has a small button on the side that would secure it around the pot. The multicolored front half of the warmer has a pleasing profile of the vessel. This would be a marvelous way to dress up your pot of coffee in the morning kitchen, or even at your office! $150.00  Reduced to $130.00!!

Under Prussian leadership Germany next quickly dispatched France in the 1870/71 Franco-Prussian War. Germany was then recognized as a European and world power. This medal was awarded by the Kingdom of Saxony. The obverse features König Johann’s royal cypher. Johann was born in 1801. 08-417 SILVER SERVICE MEDAL - BADEN. This is the Grand Duchy of Baden’s Silver Service Medal. Although not strictly a war decoration, it was a military service decoration given in times of war and peace. One of the decoration’s more interesting features is that it does not use a conventional jump ring (through which the ribbon is placed). Instead, a slotted attachment sits across the decoration’s top. Thus, the ribbon need not be folded (as was the case with a jump ring) but simply slipped through flat. It also altered matters when the decoration was mounted on a medal bar. A matching slot had to be added for its accommodation rather than the more conventional jump ring. The decoration’s obverse features a profile view of Baden’s Grand Duke Friedrich II. The reverse displays "Für Verdienst." A short length of red and yellow ribbon is attached through the slot at the top. $75.00  Reduced to $65.00!!

This is an interesting publication in newspaper format. It is from the period of 1909. One page has the genealogy of Prussia/Germany’s Kings and Kaisers going from 1701 up to Kaiser Wilhelm II. The balance of the paper deals with the officers of the GardeKorps. It is in a different format than a rangliste, but is similar. Every regiment is listed with its commander, battalion and company commanders, etc. Then it has a section of the junior officers who were assigned to the GardeKorps, but not in command of companies. It is a useful document. You will find many of these men fought during WW I. $125.00   Reduced to $110.00!!

23-284 M-1915 PAIR OF MAJOR SHOULDER BOARDS - 2. GARDE-REGIMENT zu FUß - PRUSSIA. This is a pair of major’s M-1915 shoulder boards from 2. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß. The very elite regiment was founded in 1813. It was garrisoned in Berlin as part of the GardeKorps. At this rank the man probably was a commander of one of the three battalions, or possibly on the regimental staff. The M-1915 shoulder board was introduced to replace the prewar shoulder boards. They were subdued in order to blend with feldgrau tunics. Prewar shoulder boards were more ornate with gold and silver bullion. While some officers continued to wear the prewar style, these were correct from 1915 onward. Although subdued, they still employ bullion rope. Interspaced on this silver background are black and white chevrons for Prussia. The gold braid is laid on a red felt background, which is in turn laid over a white backing. These are sewn-on shoulder boards rather than slip-ons. They are in excellent condition. $295.00   Reduced to $260.00!!

23-270 SINGLE ENLISTED MAN SHOULDER STRAP - INFANTERIE-REGIMENT Nr 88 - PRUSSIA. This is a single enlisted man’s shoulder strap from 2. Nassauisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr 88. The regiment was founded in 1808. It was garrisoned at Mainz and Hanau, where it was attached to the XVIII. ArmeeKorps. The regiment originally belonged to Nassau. It was absorbed into the Prussian Army after the 1866 Austro-Prussian war. Several German states, including Hannover, Braunschweig, Nassau, and Hesse-Kassel fought on the Austrian side (along with Bavaria, Saxony, and Württemberg). They all were absorbed into Prussia after Germany’s final consolidation war. This war’s outcome cemented Prussia’s dominance. After the 1870/71 Franco-Prussian War, Prussia’s König Wilhelm I was crowned Kaiser Wilhelm I of all Germany. This regiment, along with her sister regiment 1. Nassauisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr 87, wore a special bandeau on its pickelhauben, which Kaiser Wilhelm II granted to them around 1897. The former Nassau, Hannover, and Braunschweig regiments all received these bandeaux acknowledging their Napoleonic War service. The shoulder strap is blue and sports a crowned red cypher for Nassau’s former ruler. The shoulder strap has no buttonhole and was never worn on a tunic. Some small moth nips appear around its edges. These are limited on the obverse, but a bit more frequent on the reverse. $125.00   Reduced to $110.00!!

07-117 ENLISTED MAN’S SWORD - FELDARTELLERIE-REGIMENT Nr 2 - BAVARIA. The Kingdom of Bavaria formed their first two artillery regiments in 1824. 2. Feldartillerie-Regiment Horn was the second of the two. It was garrisoned in Würzburg (a beautiful city in Northern Bavaria, in the heart of their wine country) where it was assigned to the Bavarian II. Armeekorps. The sword is for an enlisted man from the regiment. The sword measures 39 1/4" from the top of the pommel to tip of the scabbard. The scabbard, which has one ring, measures 34 1/4" in length. The scabbard is black, with 95% of its paint present. Some dents appear on both sides of its exterior. The grip is made of Bakelite®, which was very popular during the period for this type of sword. The grip shows a fair amount of wear. The sword’s D-guard and backstrap are silver-toned. They show a great deal of oxidation. The sword’s blade is greatly curved, in the style of artillery swords. The blade is manufacturer-hallmarked and double engraved. One side depicts an artillery caisson and crew pulling a cannon. The other side of the sword shows the regiment’s name, " 2. Kgl Bayr. Feldart. Reg. Horn." The felt buffer at the scabbard’s mouth and blade top is no longer present. There is a small dent in the blade. This is a decent Bavarian artillery sword that is fairly-priced. $325.00    Reduced to $285.00!!

07-100 MINIATURE OF THE SWORD OF OTTO von BISMARCK. This is a miniature of the sword carried by the "Iron Chancellor," Otto von Bismarck. If you look closely, you will see his family’s coat-of-arms. The blade is plain. Overall, this sword, which measures 7 1/2" in length, is in fine condition. This would make a super desk piece. Or as the original owner may have done, you can open letters with it. $150.00.  Reduced to $130.00!!

27-34 MEISSEN PORCELAIN TABLE MEDAL - RESERVE-INFANETRIE-REGIMENT Nr 104. The Saxon manufacturer Meissen was known for producing some of the finest porcelain in Germany. They, along with KPM of Berlin and Rosenthal of Bavaria, were at the top of the heap when it came to their particular art. One of the more unusual items Meissen produced was porcelain table medals. These were generally made of bisque porcelain, then hand painted. The example offered today honors Saxony’s Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment Nr 104. The unit saw extensive service during WW I. The table medal measures 1 1/2" in diameter. It is painted chocolate brown. Its front features the dates 1914-1918, along with a stahlhelm and sword. The Saxon King, Friedrich August III’s crowned cypher and the regiment’s name also is present. Its reverse displays Meissen’s logo, along with a representation of a military monument and the legend "Ehret Die Toten (Honor the Dead)." The table medal is in excellent condition. $225.00   Reduced to $195.00!!

27-35 CASED SET - TABLE MEDALS - SAXON RED CROSS - MEISSEN. This is a fascinating item. We have never seen anything like it before. It is a cased set of four table medals for the Saxon Red Cross, made by the famed porcelain manufacturer Meissen. The case is 4 ½" x 4 ½," and covered in somewhat soiled white leatherette. A simple red cross decorates the top lid’s center. The Meissen hallmark appears in the upper left corner. Inside the case, the Meissen hallmark is repeated on the white silk upper lid, again in the upper left corner. The words "Vom Sächsischen Roten Kreuz Dresden" are printed in gold. The lower half is covered in green velvet, with four hollowed spaces for the four table medals. Although they all sport the same design, each one is colored somewhat differently. One is totally chocolate brown, one is brown with gold trim and highlights, one is totally white, and the other is white with gold trim and gold and red highlights. Each has a picture of a praying mother with two children beside her on the obverse. The words encircling the coin are "Es Klagen die Mütter In Hunger In Not Es Klagen Die Kinder Es Wütet der Tod (The Mother laments in hunger and need, the children lament, Death rages)." The reverse features a (red) cross, the date 1921, and the words "Landesnotopfer - Für das Sächsische Rote Kreuz." One of the case’s back hinges is broken, and the box is a little warped. This does not detract from the piece’s overall attractiveness. The table medals are in exquisite condition. $295.00   Reduced to $260.00!!

27-32 CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TABLE MEDAL - ORIGINAL PRESENTATION CASE - BRAUNSCHWEIG.  This handsome silver-toned table medal was created by the Carl Poellath firm from Schrobenhausen in Bavaria. The same firm produced top flight badges for the Bavarian contingent of the Imperial German Air Service. In this case they made a table medal for the Handelskammer (Chamber of Commerce) from the Duchy of Braunschweig.  The medal measures 2 1/4" in diameter.   It may be made of German silver (nickel).  Its obverse features the Braunschweig Stallion rearing on his Shield in the center of the medal.  The Shield is garnished with oak leaves on the top, left, and right. The words around the inner edge of coin read "Handelskammer F. D. Herzogt. Braunschweig-Für Treue Mitarbeit (Chamber of Commerce Duchy of Braunschweig - For Faithful Employment)." Our best guess is that the medal was given to retiring members of the Chamber in thanks for their service.  The medal's reverse exhibits a high-releif, richly-detailed rendering of a municipal building from the Imperial German era.  Undoubtedly it is where the Chamber was housed.  The Latin motto "Quod Tibi Hoc Alteri, (Do to others what you want done to you)" is printed beneath the building.  The medal is contained in a handsome, maroon presentation case, with the title, "Handelskammer für das Herzogtum Braunschweig," on the front.  The case is 3 5/8" x 3  5/8" square.  Inside, the upper lid is white silk with the name Carl Poellath and Schrobenhausen imprinted in black ink.  The lower half is covered in blue velvet, with a circular cutout for the medal.  It is a substantial piece, well-made and very attractive. $195.00 Reduced to $170.00!!

15-74 PAPER WEIGHT WITH MINIATURE OF OFFICER DRESS SHOULDER BOARD OF INFANTERIE-REGIMENT Nr 126 - WÜRTTEMBERG. Desk pieces of all kinds were very popular in Imperial Germany. This was especially true for officers who might have miniature swords as decorations or as letter openers, for example. In this case an officer from 8. Württemberg Infanterie-Regiment Nr 126 Große Herzog Friedrich von Baden had a paperweight made with a miniature of a dress (banjo style) shoulder board imbedded in glass. The result is a very striking desk piece that is a real attention getter. Imagine how handsome this would look on your desk (as it will on mine until you buy it)! $250.00   Reduced to $220.00!!

15-261 SIGNALMAN PATCH FOR ENLISTED MAN - MACHINE GUN ABTEILUNG. This is a very rare signalman’s patch for a tunic (this would generally be worn on the right arm just below the shoulder) for a man who filled that roll in a Machine Gun Abteilung. It is for the feldgrau tunic and features crossed signal flags. Three tiny holes appear (no bigger than pinpoint sized) where this patch might have been mounted by a collector long ago. You have to look closely to see them. They are not detractive. The patch would date from the period of 1910 to 1914. This is very rare and difficult-to-find! $295.00   Reduced to $260.00!!

15-264 GUN CAPTAIN PATCH FOR ARTILLERY-REGIMENT. This is a very interesting patch that would have been worn on the cuff or sleeve of a "gun captain." He was the enlisted man or NCO who was the commander of a single cannon. It measures 1 5/8" x 1 3/4," and features a yellow flaming bomb on a navy blue background. I have never encountered another example. This one is in excellent condition. $175.00  Reduced to $155.00!!

15-414 UNIFORM SNAP BUTTONS ON THE ORIGINAL SALES CARD. During the Imperial German period buttons, hooks and eyes, and snap buttons were an important part of the securing of uniforms. Zippers were not yet in use for trousers and so items like this were commonly used for securing garments. There are six of these snap buttons on the original sales card. These would date from about 1900-1910 and even if you don’t actually need them to secure a uniform they make for a fine addition to a display showing how these items were sold and used. $35.00    Reduced to $30.00!!

21-209 ZEPPELIN BADGE. This is an unusual zeppelin badge. I have not encountered one like it before. It is circular/oval-shaped, and measures 1 3/4" x 1 3/4." The badge features a wreath of leaves, with a zeppelin extending across the badge’s width. "Zeppelin" is seen on the airship. Running vertically is an anchor. The reverse features four pins, which are intact. This allowed the badge to be affixed to a cap or a garment. The badge is stamped in a manner similar to that of a wound badge. I am not sure what the badge’s purpose was, although I think it is something other than a patriotic piece. If anybody has an idea what it is or has seen one before, I would be happy to share that information with our readers! $250.00   Reduced to $220.00!!

21-207 POSTCARD FLOWN - GRAF ZEPPELIN - AUSTRIA - GERMANY - 1931. Postcards and letters that were flown on the zeppelins Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg were prized all over the world in the 1920's and 1930's. The premium prices paid for the luxury of mailing a postcard or letter on one of these two zeppelins were good bargains for people who never got to fly aboard one. Even here in the United States, special stamps were issued for the purpose of mailing items aboard one of the zeppelins. The always-popular gentle giants of the air flew all over the world, and made regular runs to the U.S. and South America. Today we are offering a postcard that was carried on a flight from Vienna to Germany. The simple card measures 4" x 6." At the top is a Luftpost blue sticker. In the upper right corner is a 1 Mark German postage stamp, featuring an eagle. It was canceled at Friedrichshafen on the Bodensee on 12 July 1931. In the center is another circular cancellation for 12 July 1931 from Vienna, with special emphasis that the postcard has traveled aboard the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin. The lower left of the card has a triangular cancellation indicating it is for a 1931 flight of the Graf Zeppelin from Vienna. This was a relatively short "hop" from Friedrichshafen to Vienna. The card’s opposite side is blank. The primary purpose was to send the card to an individual, not to deliver an actual message, but to have something that actually flew on a zeppelin! $95.00   Reduced to $85.00!!

One article is complete with illustrations about mine laying, while another reports about film making! It has all of the latest information from 1916 (at the time!), the year that Immelmann and Boelcke both died, and the year before Graf von Zeppelin was to die. $60.00   Reduced to $50.00!!

21-78 ZEPPELIN BRACELET. At first glance, this appears to be one of the popular WW I bracelets made from an artillery shell driving band. A closer look, however, reveals it to be a plain copper band without any driving band markings. What provides the interest is that the bracelet’s central motif is a zeppelin! In fact, TWO zeppelins are attached to the bracelet. It also sports a small drilled hole, for which I cannot offer an explanation. The bracelet breaks in half to place it on the wrist. A catch is present to ensure that it stays in place. No markings or hallmarking are present on the inside. It is quite a handsome piece. $215.00. .Reduced to $190.00!!
